JR Smith

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Considering JR's contract alone isn't enough to bring back Batum...

1. JR Smith for Bismack Biyombo and a top 8 protected 2020 1st round pick saves Charlotte the most money in year 1. (13.1M in savings)
2. JR Smith for Tyler Zeller and a top 4 protected 2020 1st round pick saves Charlotte the most over over a 2 year period (10.6 year 1, 15.4 year 2)

The Cavs could do the Biyombo deal and then immediately stretch Biz's 17M into three payments of 5.66M, chopping 11.34M off the tax bill and only increasing this year's tax bill by approximately 1.76M.

I really like the idea of moving JR to Charlotte for a protected first--but I want the protection to wear away.

Top-10 protected 2020, if it doesn't convey it turns into a top-8 protected 2021, top-4 protected 2022, unprotected 2023

Something like that--I don't want the asset turning into second rounders.

If the Cavaliers decide to make a trade with Charlotte, there are three different expiring contracts they could potentially take on for J.R. Smith:

MKG= $13 million
Marvin Williams= $15 million
Biyombo= $17 million

So, in addition to haggling over which contract they would take on, there could also be haggling over protections on a draft pick.

Charlotte could also make a deal with a non-contending team that has cap room to absorb a contract. Teams like Atlanta, New Orleans, Sacramento, Chicago, & New York come to mind. That’s why having cap space is so valuable.

They could use Clarkson maybe too if they for real want to get back to the playoffs. Getting off some of these guys that just don't help them would make sense. Save money this year and next.

Still it's a lot, and I am not sure they want to give up that much. Miles Bridges should maybe be in that deal. 2 expirings one this year one next and 6 man of the year candidate for a pick and bridges plus the bad contracts.

Marvin Williams is the only one I could see a playoff team deciding they would want as player at the deadline. He is the one I would want because he should be the easiest to flip. Also it opens the door to move Love because Marvin Williams can then soak up minutes at PF.

Why do I have this horrible feeling we are not trading Smith by the 30th?

Charlotte needed to resign Kemba for them to be a viable JR Smith trade partner to avoid the luxury tax.

One less possibility now.

The Cavs weren’t ever moving JR unless they were blown away with an offer and that hasn’t happened. He’ll be waived today or tomorrow.

No need to move him just to do it. Needed a good offer. If nothing materialized, just cut him. Easy.

TT would be useful to a contender, and I think specifically to Toronto but I also think Toronto needs another scoring guard who is not Van Fleet.. not sure how they pull that off ..

And Green is a free agent. If they can't adquire Green back Jr could be a option as a 3 and D wing.
