Koby Altman

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Some of those moves were probably pushed by Gilbert.

The Bennett move was all Mike Brown from what I remember. Brown had some connection and wanted Bennett. Its still hard to fathom that in that shit draft we took the worst guy number 1 overall.

True enough.

Is Dan Gilbert the worst owner of the Cleveland sports franchises? Can this be possible in a town with a Dolan and Haslem and a Cavs team that won the cities first title in 54 years??

I also think Grant was more than happy to push the idea that the coaches made the picks to give him cover (remember Scott was Dion, Brown was Bennett.. but Grant was Irving and TT.. and Karasev and Zeller and, and....)

I actually buy that its not like him saying he was the guy who wanted Zeller Karasev or the others is a good thing. Scott was always talking up Dion because he thought Dion was the same player he was. If the room is on the fence about two players and the coach says I would rather coach this guy they might lean towards the guy the coach actually wants to coach.

I liked Griff but not the guys that preceded him. But I have a basic disagreement with the way Griff put the team together with one way players and a lack of attention to defensively minded players. That put us in an arms race with the Warriors we couldn't win. For that reason I don't see Griffin's departure as a negative at all, actually it may turn into a positive.

I can only hope Altman sees that the only chance we'll have to beat the Warriors is to go about it differently than we did last season, with more balance and tough defense.
I also saw draft picks fly out of Cleveland faster than they could chuck up 3 point shots...

I hear that. God.. a room where Byron Scott and Mike Brown get to make mission critical decisions to the longterm health of your franchise with Chris Grant and Dan Gilbert.

I think I am going to go make a 3rd cup of coffee and look for a bottle whisky for a little extra numbing.

Sad thing is if Rip had waived his no trade clause in the 2011 draft Cavs would have had Kyrie Thompson and Thompson. But Rip refused to waive his NTC even though we were gonna buy him out anyways. To this day Ill always hate Rip more then any other player not named Curry Draymond or KD.

I'm not sure Altman is big on basketball knowledge in terms of analytics, scouting and the likes, but I can see that he is a people's guy and this can get you far in the NBA and as a GM.

I think interpersonal skills is more important nowadays when dealing with trades and managing egos, but both Koby and Dan have to trust their comprehensive scouting departments, analytics and other sources and not be stubborn when picking a player in such draft.

A good GM to me is a GM that knows the direction of his team, when to trade his players at their highest value when an opportunity presents itself either by improving short term or by changing direction and building for long term and obviously having continuity and identity on and off the floor and that's the biggest thing.

1st priority right now is managing our roster of too many unimpactful players. We need to downsize and get 1 impactful player and free up some roster spots.

Most important priority going into the season is to scout the heck out of every player in this draft and survery every fucking option using that BKN Pick.

We need to draft good this time, no place for a bust.

He is nothing more than a figurehead. Whoever is coach in during the draft will make the key decisions in Dan Gilbert's system.

Did we really get:

Wade
Rose
Green

...all on veteran minimum contracts?

I mean, that's fucking amazing. And then we went and added:

Crowder
IT
Zizic
BKN #1

...and we only lost Kyrie.

We simply had a phenomenal offseason. Bravo, Koby. Bravo.

Amazing that we have gone three months without a single post on our GM, the third most important non-player in the organization. But reviving the thread to post this ESPN piece on Altman, a deep dive into his background, etc.

I think the jury is still very much out on Altman. Hits on Wade and Green (with Lebron's help on both), and on Calderon (probably his call). The true story of the Celtics trade begins today when IT takes the court and we will not be able to judge whether the trade was truly a success or failure until the end of the year. As everyone knows, I have my doubts -- it's a high-risk trade that helped our biggest rival, and the downside risks are enormous -- but if we can play championship-level defense with IT then it could turn out to be a big win.

The article does have a quote from Tristan Thompson comparing Altman to Rich Paul, which seems like a bad omen. Couldn't they find any other players to comment?

Lots of good stuff in here, both on Koby himself and the internal organizational dynamics over the summer.

The entire evaluation of Altman for me depends on the Kyrie trade

And the entire evaluation of the Kyrie trade for me depends on how Isaiah plays tonight

No pressure though.... pshh...
