New TV Series to watch

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
If anyone watches the show the Strain, they've taken a very dystopian approach to the new season. Never read the books but I think it was a needed change. That kid is such a piece of shit. Also a really bad actor.

I thought the books were fun, but man the show was utterly awful. I lost interest in the first season because it was just so terrible.

How is season 3 ? I watched season 1 expecting a lot and came away disappointed and i thought season2 could not be any worse but was i wrong. It was worse. Is 3 worth watching or is it better than season 2 and hence the feeling of it being better?

Season 3 was a little better but the kid was just freaking infuriating. It got a lot more intense as opposed to things happening behind the scenes which I like more.

Can someone recommend me a HBO show to start watching.

I have seen GoT, The Wire (was that HBO?), most of VEEP, The Sopranos, True Detective, Band of Brothers, Oz, Eastbound & Down, Entourage.

Pretty much all I can think of right now. Trying to get into something else.

Give me 1-2 shows I should definitely check out.

Westworld? Ballers? The Night Of? I have no damn clue. I like pretty much everything besides The Bachelor type shit, reality TV.

westworld really pays off big at the back half of the series, ballers is basically entourage but with the rock and no jeremy piven. both are good

Ballers & The Night Of are great. Westworld I couldn't get into but a lot of people love it.

The Leftovers is the no-brainer answer here. Not a huge commitment (3 seasons of 10 episodes), season one is good enough, but seasons 2 and 3 are incredible.

Night of is really good. I say that and Leftovers, but you have to power through season one. Then it's the best series ever

Not new but Rick and Morty returns Sunday (re-airing season 3 episode 1) and then the first "new" episode runs on July 30th.

Best show on TV hands down IMO. If you haven't watched it, do yourself a favor and binge it NOW. IM TINY RICK WOO

Please make sure you don't make the mistake I did and have your phone distract you. This show is about as good as it gets.

I was late to the party with Rick and Morty, but I watch one per weeknight and I'm almost caught up. When I started I thought it was just no holds barred South Park type comedy but sci fi. The plot, which they roll out slowly, is much more nuanced than you would expect with all the dark humor and quick hit gags. Really good shit!

Ozark is getting some pretty rough reviews today. Seems like the first 6 episodes were released to critics ahead of its release this weekend.

Two reviews that start almost exactly the same:

A white, middle-class antihero gets involved in organized crime and does terrible things for his family, who in turn do their own terrible things. There’s graphic violence and a strip club, and the whole series seems to be shot through a blue and gray filter.

The Netflix thriller (streaming Friday, ** ½ out of four) draws comparisons to other crime dramas starring family-focused antiheroes, like Breaking Bad or The Sopranos: Marty Byrde (Jason Bateman) is a bored, disinterested Chicago financial adviser with a seemingly perfect family and a sensible Camry. He also happens to be a money launderer for a powerful drug cartel.

Marty’s dilemma is unfortunately Ozark‘s, as well. What might have felt like a novel idea 10 or 15 years ago — middle-aged white anti-hero does something terrible to help his family, and only gets pulled in deeper and deeper — is now so tired that it would require sheer brilliance to come out feeling as fresh and untainted as all the money that Marty cleans.

And Ozark isn’t up to that challenge.

The series (it debuts Friday; I’ve seen the first six episodes) is dark in every way — the graphic violence threatened (and occasionally committed) by cartel enforcer Del (Esai Morales), the muted color palette that makes everything look blue, the utter lack of humor — and methodical in the way it follows the Breaking Bad playbook. It’s really not until the third episode that it even becomes the show that it’s about, devoting the first hour to Marty’s Chicago life falling apart until he has to propose this move to the Ozarks, and the second to Marty and wife Wendy (the wildly overqualified Laura Linney) looking for a place to live down there and meeting their new neighbors.

If it draws similarities to Breaking Bad, I'm not sure that's necessarily a bad thing. I also don't think that dark, white family man drama is as saturated as is being suggested. There's still plenty of room for creativity and growth in that kind of storytelling.

Has anybody read the Ozark books? Are they any good?
