Re: James Posey is opting out of his contract...

We missed the boat on Posey...I bet he isnt half as good next year btw...just my guess

I think Pietrus is the guy to go for...He can make a shot when set and he is athletic as all get out...Ill take him and let him and Sasha battle it out for PT

Re: James Posey is opting out of his contract...

Posey will probably want the full MLE for at least 3 years. i'd like him here, but i'm not sure i'd want the Cavs to give up that kind of money.

Pietrus, i wouldn't mind.

Exactly... I think once Posey finally got that ring, his days of playing for less for a contending team were over... I think he's going to try and get a nice, secure, lucrative contract since it might be one of his last ones...

Depending on the price I would definitely sign him but with the salary cap situation that we're likely to be in, any free agent acquisition's price will actually be doubled because of the luxury tax... So if Posey wants around 3 million, it's going to cost 6 million in reality because of it... Which means we're likely to go for a much cheaper player...

I don't get why people like Pietrus so much... He's never been too efficient, his numbers on 82games.com look terrible, and he seems really inconsistent... Maybe I'm too much of a numbers guy but I just don't see what you guys see...

I think if you look at him and his career with the Warriors, it looks a lot like Pavlovic's and his with the Cavs... He started off slow and eventually gained his coaches confidence, which lead to a real nice season in a contract year... Then once he got payed his performance slipped up.. And I think Pietrus is also as frustrating in the same sense that both of them have a lot of God-given talent, it's just mentally were they are lacking and is why they're having trouble reaching their full potential...

I'd rather go a different way if we're looking for a perimeter defender...

As far as other names, at the top of my list would be Quinton Ross and Yakhouba Diawara... They're not much of offensive players but they're both pretty good perimeter defenders...

Maurice Evans, James Jones, Kirk Snyder and Michael Finley are also guys who are better shooters than scorers but can still defend...

If we wanted a low-risk, high-reward type bargain deal I'd look at Carlos Delfino and Mickael Gelabale too...

It's too bad guys like Josh Childress, Keleena Azubuike and Dorell Wright are all restricted...

Re: James Posey is opting out of his contract...

I agree, Smooth.. Pietrus is not someone I'm excited about to be honest.. Would I take him over Sasha ?? Yes, of course, considering I'd take a blind pigeon over Sasha.. But that's not here nor there..

Even if would cost 6 million a year for Posey, if the owner is ready and willing, I would do it... The guy brings more to the table than many of the guys available at that spot...

My only concern with Posey is that he would cash in and basically call it a career and not put forth that same type of effort and intensity... But, I see no evidence to suggest it would happen... Just a concern...

That was Posey's 2nd ring - he won in Miami too - one reason he went to Boston was to bring them championship experience.

Re: James Posey is opting out of his contract...

Have to go with Smooth and Pip on Pietrus. I like him but I'm not sure he brings that much. He'll also likely be looking for the full MLE or close to it. If Sasha gets back to where he was in 06-07 than he can provide what Pietrus would.

I'm pretty much looking at cheaper options now since I don't expect the Cavs to spend a ton in free agency. I'd have Maurice Evans and Kirk Snyder at the top of that list. Both can help backcourt depth and bring solid defense to the backcourt at a more reasonable price.

Re: James Posey is opting out of his contract...

with any potential free agent signee, you must try to imagine watching game 7 of the finals on ABC with Mike Tirico announcing, "And here comes _______ subbing in for the Cavs". as much as i like pietrus, i do not like how his name fills in that blank.

How about it's too bad we cut Keleena Azubuike off our summer league roster 3 years ago...

Re: James Posey is opting out of his contract...

I want to kill myself every time I hear that we passed on Posey for Pavs. I'm not a Pavs-hater, but come on. I'm hoping Dan has seen the error of his ways. And while I think Posey would be content playing for the Celtics again and is just trying to get more cash, I do wonder what the chance to start here would do for him. Or that hometown lure.

Pietrus, I'll add, is a pretty bad FT shooter for a guard. 65% range. I like his game, but he only makes sense if a few other options are gone. I don't see him as much of an upgrade to Sasha.

Re: James Posey is opting out of his contract...

I have to agree with everyone about Pietrus. He has the size and athleticism we need. He's a top-notch perimeter defender and a pretty decent (but streaky) shooter. He's an aggressive guy who can run the floor and finish with a vicious dunk. Long arms, great leaping ability, a strong NBA body, good lateral quickness and some years of experience under the belt. And he's only 26. Sounds like what we need. If we had had just one more quality perimeter defender in the Celtics' series maybe we'd be drinking the bubbly.

ESPN's Chad Ford mentioned that he could never figure out why Nellie never gave Pietrus more playing time. Good question. Pietrus has the tools.

Will Ferry be willing use a good portion of the MLE to get Pietrus? The Spurs are reportedly interested in him as well. The Cavs did show interest in Pietrus last summer when he was a restricted free agent. No reason to believe that they feel any differently now that he is unrestricted. Time will tell.

Cavs going after Posey?

From the insider rumors at espn.com:

For the NBA champion Celtics, free agency begins today with James Posey as the primary focus. Most other personnel matters will be handled after Posey's situation is settled.
"Posey will be a guy we'll be talking to right away," Ainge said yesterday. "He's a top priority for us. Once we start there, we'll move toward other free agents and go from there." -- The Boston Globe

Posey's hometown Cleveland Cavaliers are said to be putting together an offer, in addition to the Detroit Pistons, New Orleans Hornets, Los Angeles Lakers and Houston Rockets. New Jersey, which came close to signing Posey last summer before he was talked into going with the Celtics, also may revisit the situation, though like most teams the Nets are carving out cap space for 2010. -- Boston Herald
