Re: Posey opted out; On Cavs radar?

Offer Not Good Enough
James Posey | Celtics
Though agent Mark Bartlestein declined to name the other franchises that filed offers for James Posey, the group is known to include a substantial list of playoff teams like the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Houston Rockets, the New Orleans Hornets and possibly the Detroit Pistons and the Los Angeles Lakers.
It's unclear how close the Celtics' offer came to the mid-level, long-term deal that Posey wants, with the desired first year starting at approximately $5.8 million and extending over four or five seasons. The C's opening move obviously wasn't good enough to bring matters to a quick resolution.

"They would like it, and we would like as well, to get it done right away," Bartlestein said. "We'd like nothing better but that's obviously not the case. But we'll see where it goes from here." -- Boston Herald

If he wants a 5 year deal, it better be team options for the last 2 seasons.

Re: Posey opted out; On Cavs radar?

for that many years and money I rather get Pietrus. Good defender, decent at shooting 3's, much younger, more athletic.

Me too, I don't understand why Pietrus gets blindsided on this board in favor of Posey. Yeah Posey has 2 rings but he got them on a squad with Shaq/Wade, and Garnett/Pierce/Allen. The odds were pretty good in those situations. Pietrus is every bit the defender, younger, gives you about as much offensively and is being underutilized in GS. He is worth a look if we are gonna consider Posey.

Re: Posey opted out; On Cavs radar?

He gets snubbed because of Posey's ample amount of national television exposure this past season. I'm not saying its right, I'm saying that it is the reason.

Re: Posey opted out; On Cavs radar?

Pass on Posey for that many years AND the amount of money he wants per year... I could of told you this was going to happen when he decided he wanted to opt-out... After fulfilling his dream of getting a ring, he's going to go to the team that offers him the most years and most money... He's just thinking about this being possibly his last contract and he wants to be paid well...

I'm not a fan of Pietrus at all... He's really an enigma as every year I hear about him having the potential to be a Bruce Bowen-type defender and then he just completely flops... I hear the Warrior fans talk about him and it doesn't turn me onto him at all... He seems like he's a real inconsistent/streaky player who has the talent to succeed but just doesn't because of his mental limitations... Sort of like Sasha...

I guess he'd be decent depending on the money and the years but I don't think he's going to be in a reasonable price range for us..

If we're looking for a good perimeter defender, I really like Yakhouba Diawara.. He put up some nice numbers last year on the defensive end and I think he's a very underrated defender... Plus he's a guy who could probably come for cheap...

So, it looks like the only options left are Posey and Pietrus. Maggette isn't signing here, and all of our other names (Redd, Brand, Baron, Miller, Mayo, CDR, blah, blah other pipe dreams) are out of the picture. Unless Ferry sprouts a full head of hair and amazes us with someone we haven't thought of yet.

Got any more info on him? I'm not really familiar with him at all. I'd like to consider all possibilities. Especially considering the fact that we are probably in a situation where finding a diamond in the rough could be our saving grace.

Right now he's a UFA after the Nuggets declined to make him a qualifying offer...

Supposedly San Antonio, Dallas, Miami and Memphis have all expressed interest in him thus far...

As far as a player...

He's 6'7" 225lbs., will be 26 in August and will be in his 3rd year in the NBA (he came over from France)...

He's really not a good shooter at all but he did improve from last year's %'s... He shot 41% from the field, 32% from 3 and 71% from the line... He's not much of a scorer either and actually the past two years the Nuggets have been significantly worse offensively when he's on the floor.... His PER has been terrible and he's not too efficient...

Flattering, right?

But I'm not really worried about that... I just love the guy's defense..

On/off court Defense:

'07-'08: -3.3
'06-'07: -3.6

OPP PER playing SG:

'07-'08: 13.3
'06-'07: 14.4

OPP PER playing SF:

'07-'08: 14.1
'06-'07: 13.9

Those are really good numbers considering that he was most likely guarding the best perimeter player whenever he was on the court with the Nuggets being a defensive inept team and with the pace the Nuggets played at... Usually players that play on teams that play at higher paces, are subject to their defensive numbers getting screwed up because of it...

He's not a great option but I think he's one of the better ones considering how cheap he'd likely come...

Re: Posey opted out; On Cavs radar?

I agree with everything you just posted. Pietrus is 26 and hasn't been given a chance under Nelson. He could flourish with a change of scenery...I think he would do very well under MB.
Posey is the trendy pick because he just won the title, but he's going to be 32 this season...no way I lock him up long term. Pietrus is the smarter choice.

What do you consider, "hasn't been given a chance under Nelson"?

I mean he did average around 24 minutes a game in Golden State, under Nelson's tenure... He also started in 54 out of the 138 games he played in...

So I'm not sure what you mean...

No way I lock Posey up long-term either but Posey brings the intangibles, brains, energy and toughness that Pietrus doesn't come close to matching... Which is why I think he's getting a lot of attention right now...

Re: Posey opted out; On Cavs radar?

james posey is a baller, made big shots on the big stage and played great D, plus numerous hustle plays.....thats why hes gettin all the attention right now

So i bring up Pietrus' name on this thread as a bette option, Split agrees with me an he gets all the credit. Why must you keep the white man down like that max? Where is the love?

Re: Posey opted out; On Cavs radar?

Not sure if this has been accounted for yet... but the celtics seem unwilling to give posey the raise that he wants, so the cavs do have an opportunity

Never the less im not sure how long of a contract I would give him he is getting up there in age...

and due to the fact that there is a mysterious 'Bermuda esq. Triangle' hovering above Cleveland that puts all the incoming players with reputations as good 3 point shooters into funks it might be even riskier...

Re: Posey opted out; On Cavs radar?

Pietrus is the clear choice he's basically the same as posey only younger.

Pietrus' for some reason went from averaging 26.9mpg last season to 19.9mpg this season. If you remember back to the playoffs this is when the trend started. I see more of the same this year.

Besides that he's the best choice out there if you compare him to anyone else on the radar. He has better stats than Posey, Evans the whole lot and he played less mpg and he's 26 it's clear to me who we should be going after.

Re: Posey opted out; On Cavs radar?

I am also in the Pietrus boat over Posey. James is getting to the age where I just can't trust him to contribute with a longterm contract in tow. Pietrus' defense would fit in great for this club and he can score a little. He strikes me as a guy who can work in a half-court offense and he isn't a product of a wide-open offense. He strikes me as one of the available bargains- a young, talented ballplayer w/o an attitude who still has room to develop.
