Posey signs with Hornets. PIP suicide watch is on

Re: Posey opted out; On Cavs radar?

If we added Posey, I'd be stunned. A PG and I'd say we're set.

PG- West/Gibson
SG- Gibson/Posey/Wally
SF- LeBron/Posey
PF- Wallace/Smith/Hickson
C- Z/Wallace

This is assuming Varejao is dealt. I'd imagine Wallace playing as a tweener, and allow Posey to do his thing off the bench with Wally going more as a SG since he doesn't really have the quickness to attack.

posey starts over gibson. Defense over offense in mb starting rotation. We need a back up center more than pg imo, but both would be nice.

Re: Posey opted out; On Cavs radar?

I dont understand why it was Posey or Pavlovic. That really doesnt make sense.

They wound up signing an insurance guy anyway and Posey would have been better than Devin Brown. Posey didnt break the bank in Boston.

Why didnt they just do both?

Posey is 31 and shouldnt get a more than a 3 year deal. He has been a fringe starter/back up over the last 3 years and wouldnt be the answer for the Cavaliers at SG

Re: Posey opted out; On Cavs radar?

Hard to believe Posey won't be back in Boston next season. But, if not, he's the swingman option I like the best of all the names out there. He can defend, hit the trey, run the floor, hit a baseline jumper and, most importantly, he know what it takes to win a title. The latter can't be under-estimated.

All indications are that Mike Brown wants a quality perimeter defender with size and quickness who can also hit an open shot. I remember seeing him in a little-known interview on NBA TV last summer during the summer league telecasts where he said the same thing. Here we are a year later with the same issue. If we had had that player on this team during the playoffs this past season, I think we would have beaten the Celtics. They are not light years ahead of us.

Getting another star on the team would be great and trading Varejao seems like a foregone conclusion but I'd really like to see us get a player like the one described above. Imagine if we had just been able to slow down Paul Pierce a bit! Mike Brown has mentioned several times since the Celtics' series that we outscored them overall. 85 ppg to 84.1 ppg for the Celtics, if I recall correctly. That's a clear indication that we're close.

If you have trouble scoring, which we clearly do at times, then your only alternative is to play better defense. That starts out on the perimeter. Effective perimeter defense slows down the ball, contest long range shooting, stops dribble drive penetration and protects the big men from getting into foul trouble.

Long athletic players like Posey and Pietrus can help you do just that. Slower-footed players like Szczerbiak present a challenge to that goal and require more help defense. Help defense in one area means opportunity for the opposition in another. The better teams will find a way to get the ball the open area. So, the better your perimeter players are the less vulnerable your overall defense is.

I agree with Mike Brown. I want a tough, long, quick, athletic perimeter defender who can play both the 2 and 3-spots. Experience required. Long range and mid-range shooting preferred. This is the area which I hope the Cavaliers are looking to address.

Re: Posey opted out; On Cavs radar?

Actually, if you have trouble scoring you can actually make changes offensively so that you dont have as much trouble scoring.

The long lost arts of ball movement, player movement and offensive adjustments. You might find the Crystal Skull before any of those things in Cleveland.

I agree we need a backup Center, but I'd say we need a backup PG more. Gibson does ok, but I hate pulling him away from the 2. Worst comes to worst with the 5, Wallace rotates.

Re: Posey opted out; On Cavs radar?

You're right MYoung 23 but clearly Mike Brown isn't getting that message. Ball and player movement...radical concepts!

Re: Posey opted out; On Cavs radar?

If we get him, passing on CDR would make a lot more sense. Don't want him for anything longer than the 2-3 years range, though.

LeBron held him to 40% shooting and 19 ppg.....

Re: Posey opted out; On Cavs radar?

Mike Brown constantly preaches ball and player movement, it's hardly a foreign concept; but sometimes you guys act like a JV team could go out there and score against an NBA defense by just running an offense.

The players have to execute what they're trying to do better than the defense can defend it - or there's no point. That takes balanced talent, practice, and someone on the floor who knows how to run an offense.

And we pretty much struck out in all 3 categories last season.

Just look at what our defense did to Boston in the series? We didn't overplay Garnett. We didn't let Rondo create on drives. We took advantage of Rondo's shaky shooting to double Allen and others. Their ball movement and unselfish play no longer improved their shots, and our defense reduced their offense to our level. Both teams had to make contested shots -or- get offense from where the defense allowed it.

Re: Posey opted out; On Cavs radar?

LeBron held him to 40% shooting and 19 ppg.....

Yeah, we did a great job on Pierce ... that is except game 7.

Which should tell you something, as game 7 was also LeBron's best offensive game.

Offense and defense are zero-sum to some extent. It's very hard for NBA players to put in full effort on defense and still give full effort on offense (or visa-versa). That should be readily apparent just watching the guys who try to defend LeBron. Teams frequently have to rotate through multiple defenders on James because he wears them out.

Re: Posey opted out; On Cavs radar?

Maybe if we signed Posey and Pj Brown, we would have won the whole thing.

Re: Posey opted out; On Cavs radar?

I think Pietrus is underrated, he had good numbers a season ago, with 11ppg 5rpg 0.8spg 0.8bpg , I think him and Posey are pretty much the same,
Posey is taller, has much more epxerience
Pietrus is still young, he is more athletic and explosive,
They are both very good defenders

Re: Posey opted out; On Cavs radar?

Posey's ability to play minutes at the 4 are valuable. He is versatile, but is clearly gonna be on the downward slide in the not too distant future.

Re: Posey opted out; On Cavs radar?

Yes, his future is limited, but he plays hard. A hard player with energy has value beyond his statistical contribution and since we are dead set on dishing out Andy this year I see a large value in bringing in a vet who knows how to win and puts the energy forth to do so. He will be a team leader in the playoffs as far as effort is concerned. He will stand beside LBJ in the clutch minutes in the playoffs (as long as he isn't injured) and set an example of how you need to play in order to come out on top.
