Don’t get the love for Williams. His defense is:

30th in yards allowed
24th In PPG
28th in passing yards per game
28th in rushing yards per game
19th in sacks (despite incessantly blitzing)

Yes, they’ve forced a lot of turnovers, but unfortunately that stat tends to not translate too well year-to-year.

Gregg just looks decent because he followed the worst HC in league history. We can't forget he's still bad at the job he was hired to do.

I get the stats arent great but he's slowed down some pretty good offenses despite the whole coaching mess to start the season. Held teams like the Saints, Falcons and Steelers pretty well in check, plus they've played some of the best teams in the AFC this year. San Diego and Kansas City light everyone up. Other than Garrett and Ward, who are the blue chippers on this defense who deliver every week? Larry O and Joe Schobert are solid, but then you have guys like Jaime Collins mailing in games, several DBs who are penalty machines, and the defense overall has zero depth. Gregg isnt perfect but he's getting quite a bit out of an average group if we're being realistic.

I think more important than the stats is the team is responding to him, and playing much harder than they did earlier this year. Could it be just a bounce from ridding the locker room of Hue's nonsense? Sure, but how can we know unless he comes back for another year?

If Arians wants someone else I wont be upset, but I like the vibe of this team since Hue was fired and Gregg deserves some of that credit.

R we really surprised that the team is responding well to Gregggg?? Look what they had to deal with over the last few years.
We can not keep Gregggg as the HC, we are a very attractive organization now, no need to settle or keep things the way they are.

I'd be less opposed to it if he were willing to hire a good DC (read: not his son) and focus entirely on game planningand team prep, but I agree our defense is just not good and the scheme plays a big part in that.

I'm not interested in keeping Gregg on as DC. Why would we? The defense has been objectively bad, even if turnovers have nullified a lot of the bleeding.

I know some coordinators are better as head coaches, but he just hasn't been good as a coordinator. Bad coordinators tend to not get head coaching jobs for good reason.

News that McCarthy won’t be the coach after buddy boy was at Texas/Oklahoma.

I think the point is that they have a RB who is averaging over six yards on first down and yet they still opt to throw it more than any team in the league on first. That's just not an efficient use of personnel.

And the lack of play action or pre-snap movement is the real damning thing to me. This is a league where you need to keep defenses guessing constantly, and a stagnant, immobile offense does the polar opposite of that.

It sounds like you posit that Rodgers has nothing to do with the issues you identify. I don't think that's exactly the case. With that said, I think it's tough to lay all of the blame at the feet of McCarthy; it takes two to create a power struggle, which I think is what happened to the offense.

Flatly, I'm just not as down on McCarthy. I'm not as sure as all of the experts here seem to be.

If Lincoln Riley is under serious consideration that would be interesting, but I’m worried that he has zero NFL experience. If he was the guy he’d have to fill his staff with veteran assistants.

At the end of the day, this can be attributed to one of three things:
1. Gregg isn't pulling his weight with defensive scheming
2. The personnel still isn't there
3. A combination of both

I tend to lean toward excuse #3 but honestly, I don't know that we have the personnel in place just yet...
  • Collins is absolutely horrid
  • Our depth in the secondary is laughable... After the Ward injury, our #1 corner was TJ Carrie Sunday
  • Peppers is relatively one dimensional and has not made drastic strides in coverage although some could argue this is on Gregg
  • Our linebackers may be the thinnest group of all - and that's saying something. Schobert and Kirksey are fine players but they aren't All-Pro difference makers who are capable of disrupting the run/blowing up plays in the backfield/rushing the passer
  • Ogbah has been relatively underwhelming as far as I'm concerned but then again... could also be attributed to Gregg
Ward, Randall, Ogunjobi, and Garrett appear to be the cornerstones. We need at least 1-2 more high-level playmakers (and depth) before this D can take a leap, IMO.

Celtics hired Brad Stevens and some people had similar reservations. He was the youngest coach in the NBA and had no NBA ties or experience.

I'm in your camp, where I think it would help......but times change and every coach is different. I think the jump is far easier now, with how the league's rules have changed and how offenses have really opened up.

That’s the worry. He’s still a fairly new head coach in college. He needs to follow mcvays path and hire a strong experienced DC. Hopefully Riley would keep kitchens too. As long as kitchens would accept a non play calling OC job.

I don't think Rodgers is blameless, but McCarthy's lack of creativity on offense is a big reason why he's constantly getting hit. We saw firsthand what vanilla playcalling can do to a QB here, as Baker got hit time and again in Haley's boring scheme but has somehow only been sacked twice in four games with Kitchens calling the plays and keeping the defense guessing. Rodgers, for his part, has a tendency to break plays too early, miss easy reads, and constantly change the plays, making McCarthy look even worse.

But McCarthy has still been a big part of the problem there. Now, maybe he goes somewhere else and completely adjusts his playcalling to get with the times, but is that really the type of gamble we want to make? Our time to go all-in is now, and if we hire the wrong coach, it could have major consequences for the next decade.

Firing position coaches during the season is such a bitch move. It doesn’t accomplish anything except makes the HC look like an asshole who’s trying to find others to blame.

Ravens won a Super Bowl the year they fired their OC
