I couldn't care less if Wonder Woman is a female badass -- I have zero issues with that. Loved her character in BvS.

But before I go farther -- what do you mean by "female empowerment" scenes? I mean, she was a badass in BvS, but it was organic -- there wasn't any commentary or emphasis in the movie that we should all take particular note that she was a female badass. It didn't seem like they were trying to make a point -- they were just introducing a new cool character.

Did they do something different in the WW movie?

Female empowerment in the sense that she's an Amazonian... so, you can imagine what that might entail. There's quite a bit of commentary from Wonder Woman with respect to her independence and not needing to be chaperoned. She goes off and often does her own thing.. They're definitely trying to make a point.

In this example, feminism. Ghostbusters was a really good example of a movie that became unwatchable because of ofd screen antics. It actually wasn't even that bad.

But crowbaring women into roles simply bc of their genitals is just off putting. And mad max was great, I'm glad it wasn't ruined for me. That's sort of why I back off of the culture war

Just can't imagine how feminism would turn someone off from seeing a film; never thought anyone would find the concept so objectionable? Like, I'm legit confused... o_O

Too bad. How much bigger a statement would it be to just have her be a badass, and act as though there was nothing remarkable about that. Oh well....They won't miss my $$, and I won't miss not seeing the movie.

If I want to be preached at, I'll watch Samantha Bee. Which, obviously, I won't.

Your idea of feminism and mine are different.

But.. there is something remarkable about a woman who is this amazing, especially in her time period.

It would be astounding if they totally ignored the fact that she was a woman in 1940s England dictating terms to Parliament.. :chuckle:

Oh well....They won't miss my $$, and I won't miss not seeing the movie.

I'm honestly trying to understand why this would keep you from seeing the film?

But... it's not really preachy... It's actually a good superhero movie.. It's not great, but it's not bad either.

If 17% self identify as feminists and 90% want equal rights, I think that means people)(80%) don't agree with your opinion of objective reality.

I'm not sure what this means?

Also, there's some dispute about that figure:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/national/feminism-project/poll/

And here's the cross-tabs of one of the polls that are more in-line with what you're saying, and it's not really as suggestive as you're stating:
https://cdn2.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_asset/file/3570070/Vox_Poll_Toplines__2_.0.pdf

What I take from that is that a slim majority of all respondents (52%) say they aren't feminists; 18% say they are; 26% say they're not sure. If you assume 1/2 of all respondents are male; and 2/3rds of feminists are women, then those numbers are nowhere near as bad as one might think.

I don't really understand the logic that a movie about female empowerment has to be preachy. Movies like that often are, but they don't have to be. Neighbors 2 was essentially a movie about female empowerment, but it wasn't even remotely preachy. It was just dumb and funny.

And I know Dave brought up the new Ghostbusters, but I think that failed largely because the trailer they released was absolutely abysmal and not even remotely funny. That trailer made it seem like the movie was a dumb slapstick comedy that had no understanding of the original source material. If they had released a great, funny trailer, I think that movie is received far differently. You'd still have some people refusing to see it because they had the gall to remake a movie with women instead of men as the main characters, but I think the bulk of us who didn't go out to see that movie didn't go because it looked fucking terrible, not because it had some feminist message.

I thought Bad Moms was pretty funny. I did think Mila Kunis was a little bit of a stretch as a lead, but I got some laughs out of it.

The only thing worse I've seen this summer was when I drove by and saw damage mowing his lawn in a black tank top and jorts...

I like to be preached at. I'm not very smart and I'm easily convinced of things if someone speaks about them passionately.

If it's about empowerment (female or otherwise), it's almost certainly going to be preachy because the actual purpose is to get some message across.

On the other hand, if it is about telling a good/entertaining story on its own terms, without some "message", it probably won't be preachy.
