Do Not Sell My Personal Information
My predictions for tonight and what I want to win

Best Picture - Shape of Water (Get Out)
Best Director - Guillermo Del Toro (Greta Gerwig or Nolan)
Actor - Gary Oldam (agree)
Actress - Sally Hawkins (Soairse Ronan)
Supporting Actor - Richard Jenkins (Sam Rockwell)
Supporting Actress - Allison Janney (Laurie Metcalf, though I'd go Janney in a normal year)
Special Effects - Blade Runner (agree)
Cinematography - Blade Runner (agree)
Original Screenplay - Shape of Water (Get Out....seriously, if there is one category I want any movie to win, it's Get Out winning this)
Adapted Screenplay - Call Me By Your Name (no personal favorite, though Logan winning would be cool)
Best Costumes - Usually I don't give 2 shits about costumes, but if a movie about an obsessive dressmaker doesn't win best costumes....

Is Three Billboards worth watching? I've heard a lot of bad things about the way it apparently tramples over race/gender issues and how it's completely overrated by critics.

It was a funnier, less depressing Manchester by the Sea

Anyone feel aggrieved after last night?

I thought it was pretty on the mark regarding the predicted favorites.

Thought it was dumb that Lady Bird didn't win anything. Dumb that Phantom Thread only won costume. Dumb that Get Out didn't win best picture.

I actually liked Shape of Water but that's not the best picture. Not close.

I was hoping Disaster Artist would win for screenplay.

But those ladies who accused Franco of stuff, and evidently backed off after the damage was done, killed any chance of the world seeing Tommy Wiseau at the Oscars.

I enjoyed it. Feels a lot like a Cohen brothers film.

Three Billboards was way better than that Bestiality flick Shape of Water.

I don't know anyone who felt Shape of Water was really the best picture... I could see Lady Bird. I only recently saw Get Out, just last week; thought it was really great.

Right now, what do think the odds are Black Panther gets nominated for best picture next year?

I'd say somewhere between 40-50% right now.

I'd say it's much less than that. The Oscars are allowing unconventional films (in the Oscar sense) into the running (Get Out, TSOW), but I don't think we're anywhere near nominating comic book themed movies yet.

Perhaps, although I've read that both The Dark Knight and Deapool both were the first "runner" up for nominations in their respective years. So maybe there are closer. Plus, the academy has had a bunch of new members in the last few years.

I'd say it's probably around 50% ...

I'd honestly be shocked if it weren't nominated, particularly if we're comparing it to the films that were nominated this year.

I haven't even seen it yet, but hopefully it's higher than that.

I know I'm opening a can of worms with this, but, I find myself agreeing less and less with how the oscars are chosen. There are a few specific kinds of films or roles that pretty much guarantee a nomination or win when does well (historical events, historical figures, movies about people just living their live where nothing extraordinary actually happens). And the kinds have shrunk over the years.

I was going to write "was Spielberg any less of a director for ET or Raiders than he was for Schindler's List", but I saw he was nominated for both of those movies and the original Star Wars was actually nominated for best picture. Movies like that don't get nominated anymore, even though they have expanded the field.

Christopher Nolan was nominated as best director for Dunkirk (which falls in the small category of films that guarantee nominations), but not for the brilliant Dark Knight.
