I'd say it's probably around 50% ...

I'd honestly be shocked if it weren't nominated, particularly if we're comparing it to the films that were nominated this year.

Tell me about it. Every year my wife wants to watch all of the Oscar nominated movies. Last year I bought them all after the oscars, we made it trough about half, and have no interest in rewatching several of the ones i did watch.

This year I rented a few before the oscars and saw a few thought the year. Of the ones I watched, the only one worth owning is the only one I bought - Dunkirk. I've yet to see 4 of them, though, including the winner.

I saw Get Out. I might watch it again because I never got what all of the hype is about because to me it came across as an okay episode of Black Mirror. And it certainly wasn't scary for a horror movie.

Wonder Woman was better than all of the other ones I did see, and the best DC movie in a long, long time. I haven't seen Thor: Ragenrock or Coco yet either (need to take a break from VR for that one), but they are both probably better too, and I'll be quite disappointed if they aren't.

It's like the more people who pay to see a movie, the less likely it is to win any awards, no matter how good it actually is.

And I really don't get why Lady Bird (which wasn't a bad movie) is considered a better movie than, say, Logan.

Speaking of Nolan; I was incensed that neither Inception or Interstellar won Best Picture and I loved Birdman; but it absolutely was not a better film than Interstellar... And I think the case for Inception over the Kings Speech is much stronger...

There is absolutely a bias for specific types of movies, but as @col63onel says, there's new blood and that may change. I would love to see Black Panther nominated, just don't think we're quite there. What is the point of film if not to impact your senses and feelings of wonder?

I agree with you, @gourimoko, about Interstellar and Inception. Great films that should have been rewarded. Loved Dunkirk too.

And if we're taking about made for Oscars films... The Post... holy crap. That thing is arduous to get through and they threw in Streep to make sure the trap was set. Thank God it didn't win. And I'm tired of actors getting Oscars because of makeup (what's up Gary Oldman?).

At the same time, writing, filming and storytelling should always be most important. That's why Lady Bird and Get Out need to be there. Not sure how anyone could watch those and not relate to some extent on a human level. No fireworks, but that ish is so good. Anyways... rambling here, but I do think the Oscars are evolving a bit, and that's a good thing.

Has anyone here ever seen Everybody Wants Some!! Just an awesome movie in typical Linklater fashion where there's no real plot and it's more a few days hanging out with a bunch of guys. Easy 9/10 at least for me. They absolutely nail the camaraderie of being on a baseball team, the feel of being in college, and the 80s aura seems so legit.

I liked it.

I mean that the Academy isn't ready to vote for a comic movie. Too many old school heads.

Well, you could have said something similar about fantasy movies before LOTR.

There's always a first time -- I thought the Dark Night Rises deserved a nomination. Didn't get it, but I think that day is coming.

Watched this purely because of Kate Beckinsale, and trust me, she does not dissapoint. God-damn is she hot.

Movie was pretty much a wet-dream for back in my high school MILF-Hunter days. I'll leave it at that.

HotMilf/10.

Finally watched BP.

Uhm, yeah. Can’t stand dark fight scenes, especially when they’re wearing black suits.

Didn’t think it was nearly as good as people made it out to be.

Red Sparrow
7ish/10

J.Law can def play a hot Russian.
