Round 4 - Pick 111 - Dawand Jones, OT, Ohio State

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Scouts just think he has weight issues.
seems to be more than that reading this thread. his actions after day 1 of the senior bowl are certainly odd and could easily be seen as red flags

For a 4th pick this is the exact kind of guy to target though imo. Crazy upside and if he flops, well, the vast majority of 4th rounders are out of the league in short order so it’s not like you are passing on sure things at the 111th pick of the draft

Funny, becaus at one point in the Senior Bowl practices Jones was named the highest riser:

Like okay, he bailed on the Senior Bowl after an awesome first day. Skill position players do this often and still get picked high like Ke'Shawn Vaughn a couple years back.

Could it be a sign of poor character? Sure. Could just as easily have been an agent misreading the situation and giving him poor advice.

I know I was the one who posted all the scout quotes which is good info to have, but just poking holes in it now that Dawand's our guy. The scouts say some goofy stuff in those McGinn articles sometimes.

It’s not uncommon for guys to duck out of the senior bowl after a good showing the first day. It’s happened in recent years with skill position guys and typically no one really cares. I’m not sure why it was treated as such a big deal when Jones did it. Perhaps because he already had conditioning issues and teams saw it as a potential lack of work ethic?

I haven’t seen anything about off the field conduct issues with Jones, though, so I think he’s in a very different situation compared to Winfrey, who we knew was a knucklehead when we drafted him.

I think the weight issue and not doing much at the combine. Honesty who cares, we should not have been in a position to draft Dawand, bad for him, good for us.

Yeah, I remember writing in the prospects thread how fascinated I am with Callahan developing Jones as a pure physical specimen. I then put it out of my head because who thought the Browns would be in a position to get him, let alone prioritize swing tackle over the defensive line needs. Considering our starting tackles are injury-prone, this is a gift. Jones has played both left and right side before.

I am not 100% sure if Dawand has the footspeed for left tackle, but if anyone can develop his foot work to make up for it, its callahon. I am very excited about the pick though, his blocking radius is insane.

I always felt that the only reason Dawand Jones didn't play left tackle in college is because Paris Johnson was better, and he went #6 in the draft. That's why training camp exists though, we will see for ourselves.

Heard Joe Thomas on the radio earlier. He said that if Jones can develop that quick first drop step in PP, all he has to do is essentially 'get in the way' of the rusher because he's so big. JT said his technique is poor, but a lot of that can be covered up by his size. Developing the first step so that the pass rusher isn't already by him will make or break whether he's a starting caliber tackle.

I wouldn't mind Joey spending some time with these guys in camp. He's always come across as a guy that wasn't just *great* at it, but understood the nuance, technique and skills needed to succeed. I don't think he has even position coaching in his future, but consulting, or being a "visiting coach" should.

That is exactly what i was saying on the bit of film is saw, but for some reason you guys act like Joe Thomas has more legitamacy when he says it.

If you ever get a chance to listen to an offensive lineman talk about football, don't pass up the chance.

They're routinely some of the smartest players on the field.
