Every movie he makes is a re-hash of another movie, just looks a little different. He'd make a great MCU director, because it's expected that every movie rehashed the previous ones.

Super 8 was basically a remake of ET. Now, it was competently made, and there hadn't been a movie like ET in a while, so even though it was a re-hash, I enjoyed.

Star Trek: Into Darkness was a re-hash of Wrath of Khan. Again, competently made. But Star Trek has so much creative potential, why just do the same movie with the same characters? Now, at least in Star Trek, you have so many movies and TV shows in canon, any story you do runs the risk of re-hashing an old plot. But a Star Trek movie shouldn't lack creativity.

Star Wars, though, has so many possible avenues to go. They wiped away 30 years of old extended universe canon to give the new run of movies free reign. And what did Abrams do? Remade the first Star Wars, only much worse.

It's a franchise screaming for someone with creativity. I get that they've gotten burned by Josh Trank, Lord and Miller, Colin Trevorrow and even Gareth Edwards a bit, all of whom were young and creative. I get that they want a more "established" director, which is why Ron Howard was brought it. But Abrams is just so lacking creatively. I can guarantee we're going to have a Jabba ripoff, an Endor ripoff, an Ewok ripoff and Snoke falling down an elevator shaft in Episode 9. Because Abrams refuses to write anything new.

Into Darkness is the worst film ever made due to the worst casting choice ever.

I saw that Abrams was the ep 9 director, came in here just for the gour rant, and I wasn't disappointed. Can't wait till we start getting those ep 9 plot rumors, the rants will be epic.

JJ Abrams .. after all of the negative feedback about TFA...

LOL

Do people think this thread is where Disney gets their notes on movies? TFA was overwhelmingly received positively by both critics and viewers. The movie has 92% on RT with an 89% audience rating. Oh, and there's all the fact that it broke box office records making nearly a billion dollars DOMESTIC. If you're a Disney exec a reasonable response to this would be "WHAT negative feedback?"

Now, as someone who liked the movie but had their issues with it, I understand the frustration from a storytelling perspective. And in the time since the movie came out, there has been some harsher criticism for sure. But in most people's eyes, Abrams basically saved Star Wars from the mess of the prequels and gave it a chance to be something truly great again (whether or not you think TFA managed that on it's own). Most agree that TFA was mostly a rehash, but because it introduced likable characters and told an engaging story in a fun way (with appropriate usage of effects), it saved the reputation of the franchise. Now, instead of being that great trilogy that unfortunately had a shitty trilogy attached, it's a living saga with the potential to do awesome things in the future. Maybe Episode 8 will suck, maybe it'll be worse that 7... But there's no doubt to me that they're currently doing a better job than Lucas was in the early aughts, so that's something.

You make a good point about the box office success of TFA. However, the Star Wars name alone is worth shitloads, and even TPM made over a billion worldwide 20 years ago.

I personally liked all three of the prequels better than TFA.

Is there any reason they didn't just hire the crew that did Rogue One? Honestly don't know. Was there a perception that it wasn't very good or underperformed?

That's such a low bar and they easily could've reached much higher. It's like when we fired Mike Brown the 2nd time and people said "He shouldn't have been fired because the Cavs record was better than Byron Scott's"

Not gonna touch that one...

IDK other than it's a very different project within the same franchise. I feel like the pressure is WAY higher for trilogy films than these one-offs.

I loved Rogue One and to my understanding it was also a critical and commercial success.

I'll take a bad movie that at least tells an original story over a rehash that contains nothing original.

I really enjoyed Rogue One. Characters and stories that we're not cardboard. The biggest thing for me, and something I though elevated that movie over everything that preceded it, was how it made you see the non-stars as real people with values and lives that mattered.

Not just the rest of their assault team, but even the rank and file rebel soldiers desperately trying to get the data out ahead of Vader. Very little screen time, but the director made you feel both the fear felt by those doomed men, and their willingness to sacrifice. Honestly got chills from that entire vibe in that movie.

I just hated how Forrest Whitaker decided he wasn't going to escape the planet because he was tired after being in the film for like 10 minutes. I also like how it showed the ugly side of the rebels. It was a gritty war film which was a first for a film called star wars.

Nah, Obi-Wan is going to be great, as well as when Favreau eventually directs a KOTOR movie.

And maybe they get a good director for Episode 10.

I could get on board Favreau and KOTOR, that would rock!

I am not a betting man, but if I was I'd bet heavily on Favreau doing a Star Wars movies at some point. Won't be for at least another year because he's busy with the live action Jungle Book movie. Maybe after that he needs to take a break from Disney properties. But he will eventually do a SW movie.

I also do think some sort of Revan movie will be made. At the very least, I think there will be a movie about him or Darth Bane. I actually am more of a fan of Bane, but KOTOR has a bigger appeal. But the spinoffs will still be centered around original trilogy characters/arcs. Might be 5 or more years down the line.

If after Jungle Book, Favreau takes a few years off before doing a blockbuster, or maybe does an indie film, then comes back to Disney, it might line up perfect with KOTOR movie. So it's wild speculation on my part, but also I think definitely realistic.

I would love them to do knights of the old republic. They essentially erased all that out though with the Disney acquisition. So Darth Revan actually being a legit star wars character is in question at this point.
