Star Wars 8: The Last Jedi

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Old Anakin... Hayden didn't make sense in the edit; like why is he young now, he died an old man...

Yeah, I always hated that change, and it just seemed like such a pointless change too. I thought it was fitting that, after Vader finally redeemed himself, Luke got to see him as he would have been had he not been burned. Seeing him as a youth just made no sense, and thematically it was stupid as well as young Anakin was the bad Anakin, the one who slaughtered children and couldn't control his anger. Why would that be the Anakin that Luke saw after his redemption?

It was gratuitous... They did it simply because they could.. There was literally no rhyme or reason to it at all.

If Christensen does eventually come back though, I don't think it'd be as a Force ghost, but instead, briefly as a clone.. maybe a cameo or something. Given the direction of the story, I wouldn't be surprised if they bring Vader or Palpatine back; and frankly, with how god awful Kylo Ren's character is, I wouldn't mind... especially how intense Vader was at the end of Rogue One - would pay to see that shit over 2 hours.

Do the timelines work, I mean chronologically speaking, for Obi-Wan or Palpatine given Rey is 19 in 34 ABY and Obi-Wan died prior to 1 ABY and Palpatine died in 4 ABY? Seems like there's too much of a time gap here for it to make sense, no? Otherwise Rey would need to be at least 30 years old, if not in her mid-40s (younger Obi-Wan / Palpatine), and, she's clearly not.

It seems the only original trilogy characters young enough to have her as their offspring would be Luke/Leia/Han, right?
Forgive if I wasn't clear, I am saying she could be a descendant of Obi Wan or Palpatine, not their daughter. So, like a niece or granddaughter.

Sounds like many of the changes that Lucas made to the original. I was fine with things like tweaking some special effects to make them look better or more realistic, but I hated changes like seeing young Anakin instead of old Anakin and Han shooting first. Those are things that actually change the films in a way that a prettier Death Star explosion does not.

I have to think that the people making the new films are smart enough to know that no one wants Hayden Christensen back. It says a lot to me that he starred in two of the hundred highest-grossing films ever and he hasn't starred in anything of note since. Dude is straight terrible, although Lucas' godawful writing and nonexistent direction certainly did him no favors.

It's a mixed bag really.

I saw the re-releases in the theater. I absolutely fucking LOVED ANH and Empire with the enhancements. I say this as someone who owns Star Wars on laserdisc, VCD and Japanese DVD imports long before they were released stateside (years).

Also it's important to note that Star Wars has been modified from the original theatrical release long before the special editions, so, this wasn't a new thing for Lucas to do.

He's a .. peculiar director/producer/writer, who likes to control his content. I don't mind him changing certain small aspects of the story. Young Anakin was just stupid though, I mean, it made no sense.

Han shooting first... I know people really invested in Han shooting Greedo first, I get it. The change wasn't done well. But, the problem is that Lucas didn't want to really edit the scene; he couldn't reshoot it, and didn't like how it was done. I never understood how the fuck Greedo could miss at point blank range, which was stupid, or why Han would wait to kill Greedo knowing his intentions.

As I recall they edited Han's head to slightly move, didn't they? Like he casually moved, but the shot still missed like a motherfucker...

I think it's stupid but... I really never understood why it was such a big deal to some people including Lucas. I understand why he changed it, but he did it poorly. Had it been done well, I wouldn't give a shit about it, While it fundamentally changes Han, it makes him a more heroic figure rather than an anti-hero.

While this is true, fans do want Vader back. People are clamoring for a Vader film, and you have to ask should that be a mainline film or one of the side stories?

So, if they are to bring back Vader, there is somewhat of a balancing act... That's why I say it'd very likely only be as a brief cameo and if they bring Vader back, Christensen would only play him for a hot second before donning the suit. His cloning might be imperfect, etc.. whatever.. but they'd need to get him in that suit, and that'd mean he'd be fucked up.

It says a lot to me that he starred in two of the hundred highest-grossing films ever and he hasn't starred in anything of note since.

It honestly shouldn't.

He quit acting deliberately. That's actually not surprising.

Dude is straight terrible, although Lucas' godawful writing and nonexistent direction certainly did him no favors.

Christensen's actually not that bad of an actor, all things considered. I mean, you shouldn't use Star Wars as an indication of his ability to act.

The folks that worked on ANH, and Ep.1-3 have all said similar things; that Lucas can't direct people and dialogue. He's considered to be brilliant at most other aspects of filmmaking, but when it comes to putting actors on the screen and getting them to tell a compelling story, which is the primary aspect of being a director, he just falls flat.

Moreover, with the prequels, Lucas instructed the editing and SFX crews to stitch together performances from different takes, so even if you see two actors standing side by side talking, it's very very very likely that you are not seeing a contiguous single shot of them acting - even if the scene doesn't cut away. This, coupled with poor dialogue, poor direction, and a tendency to isolate characters on screen for moments of exposition; creates this awful effect that permeates through the prequel series.

Lucas was trying something "new" with respect to filmmaking, experimenting with Star Wars, again. But he fell flat in this respect at least.

Though I really enjoyed what Vader did at the end of R1, nothing would be more lame to me than his return in the new movies. It would make no sense and serve nothing but fan-service and prove they can't move on without reliance on old shit.

Ren isn't a bad villain IMO and has potential to be great in the next movie, as long as they come up with something better than "OH NO HE KILLED LUKE" which would turn me off forever.

Just make a Vader movie a couple of years after the Episode III. You can follow it from the perspective of a few jedi who survived that are trying to gather together other survivors and Vader is racing to squash this group before they can become a threat.

Maybe they can help plant the seeds that gets the Alliance started.

Would love that as the premise of a movie, save that the Rebellion was started by Mon Mothma and Bail Organa, and no real way around that.

Vader hunting Jedi would be a BADASS flick, though!

When I was a kid I always imagined that the Jedi were so awesome that it took Vader and the Emperor giving everything they had to wipe them out.

As it turns out, the Jedi are the Dodo of super-powered warrior-monks. They are easier to eradicate than lemmings.

I'm thinking we'll see Force Ghosts and shit in the latest film; and given what they did with Rogue One, I'd actually REALLY like to see them do something similar for Sebastian Shaw as Anakin Skywalker.. I don't think it would make sense to have Luke talking to Hayden Christensen unless you made him much older with makeup/etc.

Is it a bad thing that the first thing I thought of when you said Sebastian Shaw was the mutant leader from the Hellfire Club, and not the actor. :chuckle:

So if Jedis are celibate, how can Rey be Luke's daughter?

Anyone else think Poe Dameron might be in tune with the Force? He seems like far too gifted a pilot.
