The 2014 Cavs Off-Season Thread (not coaching-related)

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Re: The 2014 Cavs Off-Season Thread

If we don't at least formally interview other candidates, then they will have lost my confidence.

I would prefer they not hire Dumars, as has often been floated. For all the credit Detroit has gotten for Drummond, look at their record the last few years, despite even more "all-in"/low flexibility moves than us (i.e. JSmoove.)

Re: The 2014 Cavs Off-Season Thread

From the OP free agent list, I would prioritize C Marcin Gortat.

I would attempt to bring back Hawes as well, while moving Varejao in trade to shore up SF position or simply cutting him to re-assign the $5M cost of his 2014-15 option.

If (as has been speculated/reported recently by Windy and others) our candidates for GM include the likes of Dumars (voted worst exec in the NBA by a considerable margin by a panel of 200 NBA writers on espn this week), Zeke Thomas (maybe the worst GM in sports since Stepien), and an active NBA player (Billups) - then I might just give up hope with this organization.

I take very little in these speculations at this point, but it worries me a bit more coming from Windy and not rumor mongers like Broussard or SA Smith. It says a lot about how far my/our faith in Gilbert has fallen that these whispers don't cause me to laugh them off immediately.

Re: The 2014 Cavs Off-Season Thread

I'd like to see Kenny Smith honestly. Dude just knows the game. I'm also fine with keeping Griffin.

Re: The 2014 Cavs Off-Season Thread

Why exactly are people enamored with Griffin, a guy who has no prior GM experience ?

Am I wrong in preferring a strong talent evaluator with proven GM experience as well as enough clout to demand autonomy from Gilbert ?

Griffin strikes me as just another yes man whose still learning/working his way into the job.

Griffin is a name known well around the league with a pretty hefty track record. That is their reasoning behind giving Griffin the keys to the job.

Yikes. I did not follow (but wouldn't be that surprised if we couldn't get the cream of the crop.)

I would just keep Griffin if it came to names like them.

I expect we will be vindicated by how Grant will take a TV analyst type job or something for at least the next year or so; it sounds like his desperation trade ideas, difficulty to work with around the league, etc.. made him persona non grata in NBA front offices.

How is this relevant ? As a small market team, we need to build through the draft, I don't see how popularity helps him there.

with a pretty hefty track record.

But he has never been a GM. How can you attribute decisions to him that weren't his to make ?

Tibs was an assistant for 20 years before becoming the HC of the Bulls. He's a top 5 coach in the league. Griff has been in the NBA FO for 10+ years.

Re: The 2014 Cavs Off-Season Thread

As of right now, I'm not going to give a final fifteen man roster for next season because it is far too early for this, but here are a few things that I think need to be done for next season.

1. Trade/Replace Tristan Thompson

I like Tristan Thompson. He's a hustler, but he is not a starter for a playoff/championship contending team. He has zero range and really clogs up the floor when he is out there. Anthony Bennett will hopefully be ready to step up as the starting power forward next season, but if he is not, we still cannot trot Tristan Thompson out there for 32 minutes per night next season if we are going to try to vie for a postseason spot. In an ideal world, Tristan takes over the LeBron-era role that Anderson Varejao played for the Cavaliers, being a high energy bench big that plays 18-24 minutes per night.

2. Do NOT Retain Luol Deng or Spencer Hawes

The two big trade acquisitions this year have definitely helped out the Cavaliers in a few ways, but I still do not think we should even bother trying to retain either of them for next season. Luol Deng was a very hyped up asset, but he has played at a lower level then his Chicago-days and seems to still be feeling the effects of an Achilles injury. He seems to already be starting to decline, even if just a bit, and since he'll be 29 at the start of next season, it may not be the best idea to guarantee him 4 years and the 40+ million that it would take to retain him.

Spencer Hawes on the other hand has been a breath of fresh air to the Cavalier center position, giving us a true long range threat at the spot and spreading the floor. Like Deng however, it may take a deal of around 4 years and close to or exceeding 40 million to extend him. Because the Cavaliers are trying to build a culture around defense, Spencer Hawes may not be the best man to commit long-term money to.

3. Offer Kyrie Irving a Max Extension

Just do it. I shouldn't even have to explain. If he declines or wants fewer years, then we'll have a different story here.

I'll post more later.

Thank you.

Re: The 2014 Cavs Off-Season Thread

Just find a way to fix this mess of a frontcourt. It's gonna be tough to do.

I'm hopeful that TT/Jack for Harrison Barnes could be discussed although I'd still like to get Deng on a 3 year deal.

Get Spencer out of here. Get TT out of here.

Draft Cauley-Stein???

As much as I'd hate another rookie, the three draft prospects I like are Kyle Anderson, Cauley-Stein and Randle, in no particular order. I'd explore trading assets before the draft though, obviously.

Not comparable.

Look, am not saying Griffin would/will make a bad GM, I just don't think at this point in his career that he is what the Cavs are looking for. His career arc at this moment would make more sense for a team looking to start rebuilding, not a team with multiple impending crucial personel decisions to be made.

Any GM needs to be able to make crucial personnel decisions. Griffin has never been a GM before so you can't even say what kind of GM he could/will be. His track record hints towards what kind of team he will build, along with the small sample size he has given us as interim GM.
