The 2014 Cavs Off-Season Thread (not coaching-related)

Re: The 2014 Cavs Off-Season Thread

People think this was a good season because we almost made the playoffs, but if you look at our record in the big picture of East records over the years, we wouldn't even be close to sniffing the playoffs in any other season. Terrible season from start to finish, hopefully we bring in some good talent this time that know how to play the game of basketball correctly. I want at least 40 wins next season. 41-41 would be fantastic.

Nobody is saying we had a good season please show me where people have said that at?

Re: The 2014 Cavs Off-Season Thread

Any GM needs to be able to make crucial personnel decisions. Griffin has never been a GM before so you can't even say what kind of GM he could/will be.

Yes, they can make them but can they get them right ?

He has no experience making such decisions, where we need someone who does.

His track record hints towards what kind of team he will build, along with the small sample size he has given us as interim GM.

What track record ? So far the only moves on his resume are trading for Spencer Hawes and signing a bunch of guys to 10 day contracts.

Re: The 2014 Cavs Off-Season Thread

it wasn't a good season, but it was a good last 2 months of the season (15-14 over the last 29 games)

We have the 19th ranked defense for the season. We are ranked 13th over the last 29 games. We have the 4th best 4th quarter defense over those same 29 games.
our offense has also improved from 24th on the season to 19th over the last 29 games.

Neither are where we want them, but things are moving in the right direction giving us something to build on. Players can go into the offseason, know how close we came to making the playoffs, know that we are better than our record, and know what to work on and what to expect heading into camp next year.

That's completely wrong. Let's go over the last 10 8th seeds in the East.

Last year Milwaukee made the playoffs after losing 5 of their last 6 games to finish at 38-44. In '10-'11 Indiana finished 37-45 and got the 8th seed as well. In '08-'09 Detroit made the playoffs at 39-43. In '07-'08 the Hawks made the playoffs at 37-45. In '06-'07 the Magic made it at 40-42. In '05-'06 the Bucks finished at 40-42. In '03-'04 the Celtics made the playoffs at 36-46.

So by my count, 7 out of the past 10 years a losing team made the playoffs in the East.

Griffin spent three years as the Sun's senior vice president of basketball operations, under which they built arguably one of the best up tempo teams in that span of time. That is part of the track record I was talking about. This list goes on.

Re: The 2014 Cavs Off-Season Thread

Isaah Thomas is a name I wouldn't mind associated w the team. He and Dumas are maybe the best backcourt combo in nba history. If anyone could garner respect and get Kyrie and dion to stop being assholes to each other.... Anyone w rings has an opinion that carries more weight.

Good point, although the record will still not be great even if we win every remaining game.

And I would add we should be much, MUCH more optimistic than .500 this coming season unless we drastically dismantle the team (i.e. Deng, Hawes gone, many other players traded for scraps, and we put up a goose-egg in free agency.)

Re: The 2014 Cavs Off-Season Thread

I'd like LeBron to sign here and Kevin Love to be obtained via trade, but since we're being realistic...

- I want the Cavs to offer the max and for Irving to sign it without hesitation. One signature can end all of this "Kyrie wants out of Cleveland" BS.

- I want a new head coach. Listen, I think Mike Brown is a great guy and I think he'd actually be an outstanding college coach where players would be more willing to buy into his system. What can't be ignored is his issues with relating to superstars in the NBA. LeBron wanted him out, several Lakers wanted him out, and now Kyrie (reportedly) wants him out. What also can't be ignored is how poor of a job he did this season. Not having the team prepared to start the season...running Earl Clark out night after night (even if garbage time) instead of Anthony Bennett...moving Dion Waiters to the bench instead of finding a way to get Irving and Waiters to co-exist...he just didn't get the job done. As I've stated several times before, I think David Fizdale is an outstanding candidate.

- I'd like to see Hawes re-signed if he's willing to stay in the ballpark of where he's at now. He compliments our other bigs well with his extended range. He has his flaws, but he makes the Cavaliers a better team.

- I don't want to see long-term cap space used just because they have it. No thank you on guys like Evan Turner. If they can't land LeBron via free agency or another high-impact player in a trade, I'd rather dish out a few 1 or 2 year deals to vets who can fill the gap until a young player is ready to step up.

- Unless they hit the lotto, I'd shop the draft pick or try to move up. I don't know that you're getting anything more than a role player at 9 or 10.

- Just say no to Isiah Thomas. He was awful as a coach, awful as an executive, and an entire freaking league folded because of his incompetence.

Re: The 2014 Cavs Off-Season Thread

-Sign Kyrie to the max

-Re-sign Hawes IF he is manageable with us money wise. (I truly believe he will take slightly less to stay here, good pairing with Kyrie and seems to like CLE).

-Sign a solid vet/solid player in free agency with all our cap space.

-Keep MB, I liked the defense I saw over the last few months and it seems our guys have bought in to MB. I would like to see him with this roster and a full off-season one more time, but if we get stuck in mud with MB next year, cut the cord.

-Make a major trade w/ the main pieces being 1st round pick and TT.

-Prepare AB to be the starting PF to pair with Hawes so they can't slide the PF onto Hawes and the center onto Bennett.

-Last but not least, get a GM that will DEMAND/REQUIRE respect from our young guys (Kyrie/Dion). A GM that has either played before or is a big name that will catch their eye and someone they respect. No offense to David Griffin, but he isn't a real big, well known name. I mean he's a good GM and well respected among the NBA, just not the type of guy to awe the players or instantly gain respect just for his name/story.

Re: The 2014 Cavs Off-Season Thread

I wouldn't want Thomas especially with how bad of a job he did with the Knicks when he was in charge.

Re: The 2014 Cavs Off-Season Thread

We need a 3, 4, and 5.

If Hawes comes cheap enough and we can get a defensive center in the draft then I guess I would be ok with Hawes coming back.

If we can't make a deal for a guy like Love then we better develop the fuck out of Bennett.

3 and D is all we need at the 3. If we can keep for Deng for a reasonable number that's fine. Hopefully if we don't play him 40 minutes a night he won't break down as bad as he did this year. Otherwise someone like Ariza would be perfect.

If we can't fire Brown then at least get an assistant in here that Mike will give the authority to coach our guards on how to run offense.

Guy is a train wreck. Keep him away from the team.

No, just no. God no. Hell no. Rings do help people gain credibility, but Thomas squandered that with his years of absolutely horrendous management. We'd be the laughingstock of the league if we even hired him to clean the bathrooms at the Q. Just keep him away from this team.

Re: The 2014 Cavs Off-Season Thread

If not for the "case" which brought himself and the team a lot of bad press, Zeke's run with the Knicks wouldn't be nearly as bad as Walsh or his predecessor, Scott Lay-Den, Lord of Blunder. He's actually an excellent evaluator of talent IMO, just a lightning rod. The Knicks are just basically the big-market version of the Cavs unfortunately.

I'll put it like this. I'd rather have Zeke related to the Cavs right now rather than a round 2 with LeBum and the related circus. I hope this team tries everything in its power to move on unless he actually wants to be here.

That being said, I'm not sure I want Zeke as GM, but not for the tired narratives about how the CBA folded because of him, or "he ruined the Knicks" (not even Knick fans say that... New York Media does).

All I want for the Cavs are some good basketball minds to make the best of what we have and to jettison what isn't constructive. It's going to be hard attracting that kind of talent here, as executives, etc. don't come in the lottery.
