Trading Tristan?

Re: Tristan Thompson

Well according to basketball reference in their first two years Love had a 109 DRtg while Thompson had a 108 DRtg. Live back both of those just slightly worse DRtg up with 112 and 113 ORtgs.

Love then went on to a 108 then a 104 DRtg the past two years while posting 120+ ORtgs.

Now will Love ever be the defender that Thompson is, no. But will Thompson ever be the scorer Love is, no. Also once again, Mike Brown coaches team defense, not individual position defense, so Love's lack of elite defense can be hidden slightly. Also if we get someone like Alex Len who is a great help defender and could be a defensive force down low as well as an offensive weapon with Big Z teaching him as their skillsets are similar, you could see a potent offensive and defensive team in the future. Biggest question mark would still remain at SF though.

Eventually we will be adding a max contract player to this team. We can go and trade for Love who fits perfectly with out two guards for pick and roll, pick and pop, and drive and dish plays, or we can wait another year and try for LeBron. Personally I think Love is a better fit for the team and would rather make a run at him, get Alex Len, and sign a different SF, possibly Rudy Gay, maybe Danny Granger (for a respectable amount like 6-8 million per year), Paul Pierce etc.

I don't think Thompson will be the offensive force Love is because he is not a jumpshooter. He has put up several high 20 point games with very few touches. He would have more of those and some 30 pt games if he was given touches in the 2nd half. I think in the end he will be the higher efficiency player. That's cool with me because I'd rather Dion and Kyrie be shooting 3's. Kyrie is so poor on D, I really want both of the starting bigs to be really good on D.

I actually like the idea of getting Paul Pierce. He would be great with the starting unit, and really help the young guys develop. We'd have Gee as the defensive backup when Pierce was out atheticized.

Re: Tristan Thompson

Okay, this whole team defense thing of Mike Brown. Yes I know we all love it, but the majority of our great defense was from AV/Ben playing off of Z/Gooden/whoever else.

Wish people realized that almost the entire time we had a top defender playing alongside a weak one in the front court. When we did have 2 weak defenders, Shaq/Z and Antwan, we got smoked.

So if we get Kevin Love by trading Tristan Thompson, Alex Len could play some defense. He pretty much has the same defensive skills as Big Z but he's more athletic. He just needs to learn to use his strength better. Not to mention Len dominated top competition but struggled against lesser. Almost like he played down to his competition. Love/Len in the post would be pretty good if Len becomes fully consistent. Also we could take the risk on signing Greg Oden and if he can even play 20 minutes a game the dude was a defensive phenom. Plus depending on if we have to add Andy to the trade or not, Andy is pretty good defensively as well. Hell if we keep Andy, Draft Len, sign Oden, I think we would be pretty set there.

Re: Tristan Thompson

With Mike Brown in town and the possibility of adding Q I would prefer to keep Tristan now. Give him to the trade deadline to grow under those two. By then games played will be similar to the end of his second season because of the lockout. And if Tristan is the sponge and leader I believe him to be I would love to see him after Brown has him day in and day out on defense and Q on offense. Tristan can be special because he is such a grinder. I hear more positive things about him than any other player we have..

And considering all the negative things we hear from Love. I wouldn't make a rash decision. Are his gripes justified? Yes. Should we hear about them from a one way star player? Absolutely not. He should be working harder than TT if he feels he was slighted. Not bitching about it. Earn it.

What are these legitimate negatives about Love? That he's upset Kahn didn't think of him as the franchise player he is and he wanted to sign a 5 year extension in a small market but got turned down? That he wants to be in the playoffs?

How are either of those negatives? Please tell me how a franchise player wanting to stay in a small market and not make the jump to a big market as soon as humanly possible is a bad thing? Tell me how a player that longs for, and desires to play in the playoffs is a bad thing. I'm pretty sure he doesn't just want to play in the playoffs either, I'm sure he wants to win a title and will be willing to work hard to do so. I mean he mentioned how his peers are constantly in the playoffs and he is sitting at home, that shows he wants to be competing at the highest level and nothing else is acceptable.

That's not negatives. If you think they are, then I'm glad you're not in charge of the Cavs.

You don't blame the people around you for doing too little unless you're doing all you can. Love isn't.

I don't remember him calling his teammates out for not doing enough. I remember him saying it sucks that he is sitting at home while the other guys on Team USA were in the playoffs. Also do you really think he just doesn't play defense and just plays offense? If that was the case he wouldn't be among the leaders in rebounding. Now sure he probably could've played a little harder and maybe had a little better defense, but it still doesn't put him in the playoffs. You put him with Irving, Waiters, and our top 5 draft pick and I'm pretty sure you see a Kevin Love that's even better than the Team USA version as he'll be constantly being stressed and taught defense by Mike Brown. He won't be Kevin Garnett or even Tim Duncan defensively, those guys were just a different level than Love talent-wise, but I'm sure he can get to a point where he's easily averaging 20ppg/10rpg/3apg/1.5bpg.

Rudy Gay is a horrible fit on this team. Especially if Dion is still here. I want no part of that. Not saying there's a possibility of it happening, but I really feel like Batum is the PERFECT fit at SF with a back court of Kyrie and Dion.

Re: Tristan Thompson

if the cavs can trade TT for a young all-star, then they should go for it.. for all the improvements TT had, he is still nowhere near the caliber of love..

And why give up TT for anything. If the argument for Love is that Browns defensive system can hide his weak defense and we want his offense, wouldn't the same logic hold for Al Jeff? You can buy Al Jeff for the same max money you are going to pay love. So is the difference between these two players worth giving up Tristan and future first rounders? in my opinion that makes zero sense.

I think if Love puts his mind to it he can improve a lot more on D than Big Al who just isn't mobile enough and plays C.

That, and the fact that Love is younger, a better rebounder and has 3pt range, and I think he's worth giving up TT and this year's top five pick.

Irving/Waiters + Love is a great core to build around. With later draft picks and FA we should be able to surround them with good enough shooters/capable defenders.

Re: Tristan Thompson

Revenged, I think I deserve to be paid more at work. I don't whine about it. You know what I do? I show up day in and day out and work my ass of for the next promotion or the next raise. I show my worth and I will get compensated.

All I can say is wow... you might be the next Kahn...

Re: Tristan Thompson

Fact is if the Cavs trade thompson because they will need another equal caliber guy to contend.

trading thompson for a guyike love is not good enough they will need to do more and this season.
