Tyronn Lue has been fired

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I'm just shocked and a bit confused as to why Blatt was let go today. The Cavaliers are first in the division and well over .500...what's the deal? Yes, the writing was on the wall when he'd look to Lue for play calling (as previously mentioned).

Now with Lue's multi-year deal...this better have an opt-out after 1 year..in case this decision went to shit. It's a trend in baseball right now, why not in basketball?

Cavs record against the Spurs and Warriors: 4-9.

One of those wins was the ridiculous Kyrie game.

When you're trying to win a title, it can't be OK to get slapped around by your main competition.

The overall record means a lot less to me. I would guess this team could play without a coach and compile a similar record, based solely on having more talent than 95% of the teams in the league.

All Lue truly needs to do is better integrate Love on offense and make small changes to strategy on defense. It seems like he just needs to slightly tinker and they'll be way better off. Maybe a different voice in the huddle will get guys to buy in because the collective body language under Blatt was awful.

Wouldn't be surprised if Kevin Love becomes an afterthought again and we go back to playing your turn-my turn between Kyrie and LeBron. I'm sorry but I don't see Lue as anything more than a figurehead who will let the players do as they please. I could maybe get behind firing Blatt if it were the offseason following a Finals loss and we were looking to hire more qualified coaching candidates. But this? This is just laughable in my eyes.

Why are people surprised Ty Lue got a three year contract?

Before Blatt was appointed, the front office considering him seriously for the head coach job. So, its obvious they rate him highly. By having him signed for three odd years, they are effectively taking away any uncertainty and showing that the players now have no scope for complaints or excuses anymore.

Remember when we hired both Blatt and Lue and we were posting about how blessed we were to have two NBA head coach-caliber coaches on our staff? Now, we get to see which one is truly the better of the two.

It doesn't necessarily even matter who is the better coach. In the NBA, connecting with the players is just as important as being a "good coach". Even if Blatt is technically the better coach, Lue may be more successful just because he's closer to the players.

Blatt could very very well find more success than Lue would have on a different team. Chemistry is important, and at least that cloud shouldn't be hanging over our head for the rest of the season.

Right. I was discussing this point with some people on Cavs Twitter. At worst, the Cavs remain generally the same in how they play. No harm done. Just not a good look, obviously...

They almost had to give Lue a multi-year deal and at least pretend he's The Man.

Teams with (semi) realistic championship aspirations generally don't go through the playoffs with an interim coach. It settles the coach and team, giving the sheen of authority, to at least act like this is their full-time job.

None of which precludes Lue from being canned if he shits the bed.

Y'all act like there's a coaching salary cap or that Gilbert isn't a multi-billionaire.

You
don't need to protect his money for him. He's richer than almost anyone in human history and getting richer every year. He can afford to pay Brown, Blatt, Lue and the next guy simultaneously, plus 200 more head coaches.

Not sure why you're saying this though?

If anything, I think Kevin would prefer a different coach with a different vision.

Let's see what Lue does before saying he's incapable.

He must make sure that Kyrie will play defense when it counts. Right now, it's ok if Kyrie slacks as he gets his physical confidence. But Kyrie has been a turnstile the last 5 games, at least, and we can't succeed if that is the case. Ditto for Love, but Love has picked up his defensive intensity recently and I think Love will be re-energized with Blatt gone.

Maybe maybe not. Players coaches get buy-in but not always the same hard work. To me, if this team was any good at holding itself accountable, then Blatt wouldn't have been an issue. To me, it stinks of "we'll be better if we get our way." Why shouldn't you be better because you want to be better? I find it hard to believe it was the choices Blatt was making holding them back more than the effort put out by the players on D, in transition, and running (or not) the offense.
