I'd try to re-sign IT, of course, but I wouldn't throw a max at him and I doubt that many teams in the league would.

Thomas will get the max... I doubt the Cavs offer him the max, but he will get it... He's got no ties here, and I don't think he stays if we don't immediately make him a max offer while another team does.

This is why I think there will be a market for IT at the trade deadline if he's healthy. Team's that are interested in giving him the max may want a head start on recruiting him.

Definitely. And he's the kind of guy who will take it as disrespect if we don't offer him a max initially too, and burn his bridge with us. Which is why I think we will, should we keep him all season.

And Cousins most definitely is taking the max.

Would be a real tough position to put ownership in for the summer. Makes me think, even if made available, that we may stay away from Cousins.

Of course, Dan Gilbert is crazy, so who knows.

Yes but that market will be extremely low priced... Given his injury, if he's not back by Thanksgiving, then I don't think he has any trade value at all.... No team will trade fair value if he's only been playing for 3-4 weeks prior to the deadline.

I project IT to be more of a lost cause at this point.... He'll be here this year, and my guess would be that he walks at the end of the season if the Cavs don't offer him a full-max.

I'm hoping that Houston implodes in the worst way and there some kind of possibility we can trade for CP3...

If he plays like he did last year, we have no choice but to offer him the max... but I doubt he will play that way -- and so, the problem you're faced with is, do you offer a max contract to a guy his age, with his injury, and the potential that he may be damaged goods?

Ugh....

Some GM will, but I don't think Altman/Gilbert does if Thomas isn't fully healed.

We'll see.

There are a limited number of teams that have that cap space, and most/all of them are terrible. If he has a good season with us and we come in with a solid 3-year offer, I think something can get done.

He's certainly about getting paid, but he's also about winning. He may do that for 3 years, $75 million.

I have a feeling we trade either Rose or IT. Because if both are healthy, then one of them will be the odd man out (probably Rose if IT is looking stellar, but if there's a market for IT then it could be him).

Both would package quite well with Shumpert for a team wanting to improve PG/SG situation.

Man, I just don't think Thomas is taking less money to play with the Cavs... I just can't see it happening..

He'll want max money over max years. He'll also be 29 years old this offseason, so a 3-year deal would be the worst number of years for him because it would likely place him outside of his prime when it's time to re-sign. If anything, he'd sign a short 1+1 deal, or a full max, but there's very little possibility his agent would advise him to sign a 3-year team-friend deal... And there will be some team out there with max money to throw at Thomas.

That's fine. Then you let him walk and play for a terrible team for the next 5 years.

Either way, you give him what you perceive to be a reasonable offer for a guy coming off a serious injury, who's 29 and 5'9. If he doesn't take it, you don't destroy your franchise hitching to the wrong wagons.

All reports with regards to him are positive. If he comes out, looks 100%, plays like he did before the injury, fits in well with LBJ, and plays well in the playoffs, I certainly wouldn't fault Altman and Gilbert for paying him.

Definitely not a decision I would want to make if everything doesn't go smoothly with him or his health though...going to be a real tough one for a first time GM.

I think Rose stays because the expectation was that he'd be our sixth man. He also has limited trade value.

I've hoped IT would be traded since we got him.. I personally think Thomas won't work out in the playoffs if he's still here, and we'll get swept in the Finals if we don't make some major changes. I think at that point, we'll be in a pretty tough spot other than the fact that we've got this great draft pick.

The argument FOR offering him the max is that if LeBron stays, you need to maintain as many assets as possible.. Thomas under contract for the max is an overpay; but it's more of an asset than non-existent cap space. So while it's a bad deal, it's the best deal if we think we could possibly trade him over the following 1-2 seasons.

This is the problem with Thomas coming back in January and not by mid-November.

The optimal solution here is trading Isaiah... assuming you can get fair value.

I don't see Gilbert letting IT slip through is fingers. We seen how much he loved the fake midget(Kay) there is no way in hell he is letting the real one go.

Are we really going to offer IT the max right away, even if LeBron hasn't committed yet?

I seriously doubt we do that.

I don't think IT has a chance of getting the max here until LeBron signs/commits.
