What about trading Shaq?

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I would be very upset if we traded him this year. Are you going to trade him for someone who can make Howard work? NO. Last year was disgusting watching him overpower everyone we threw at him. I just wanted someone with some balls to put a body on him, hard. It did not happen one time. I hate it but if there is a trade it has to be Z. If he can come back then great but we have no chance to match up in any finals without Shaq. I would be shocked to see him moved.

Think about everything you hope to expect out of Shaq this year: he plays his way into slightly better shape, scores points in the post, and guards Dwight Howard. Does that sound like an untradeable asset?

The Cavs HAVE TO make a trade with New Orleans if they can get Okafor in return for Shaq (plus pieces to balance the trade). At this point, he's substantially better than Shaq at everything we need, except post offense. I have little doubt that Okafor could do a good job guarding Dwight Howard, not to mention that the Cavs desperately need a young defensive center like Okafor going forward.

IMO, Okafor is ahead of AK47, Troy Murphy, Monta Ellis, or Rudy Gay in terms of a guy to go after in trades. Plus George Shinn is a cheap bastard, and might bite on a deal.

There's not a single guy on that list that is worth more than a weak trade package, and I really hope none of them are on our team.

If that is the list of available players, I hope our team stays set as is.

The only player on that team that I really like is Monta Ellis, but he's a square peg in a round hole here. Mo makes him redundant.

Unless the Shaq-periment turns out to be DISASTROUS (which it hasn't been so far), we aren't moving him.

I'd like to see how we fare against a 100% ORL team and against the Lakers on Christmas ...

It suprises me how quick people are to turn on Shaq being here, either Cavs fans or outside media.

Really, the issue is that the Cavs are using Shaq differently than any other team that has had him. Previously Shaq has always been featured heavily in the offense, whereas here he has a more even role on the team in comparison to Lebron, Mo, etc.

So, his numbers dip below his previous seasons, but his impact on our game is outstanding, at least after the first few games.

So far I am considering the Shaqs-periment a success. One loss away from first in the East, including wins over Orlando, Miami, Dallas, and Phoenix. Sounds good to me so far.

Shaq has actually been nothing less than awesome. We have never had the luxury of a brick wall in the paint like this. He throws dudes to the ground and I think we are still #1 for points allowed in the paint. That is going to be a huge deal come playoffs. I don't think any of our other guys are strong enough to deal with the Lakers or Orlando.

I think "awesome" is a bit too strong. While Shaq is still a good scorer, he's got a negative plus/minus, meaning that teams are scoring on him more than he's scoring on them. Do I think he'll play his way into better shape? yes. Is he a major improvement to the front line this year? yes.
But next year's front line is a total mystery right now and if they have a chance to acquire Okafor in exchange for expiring contracts, then they have to do it, even if it includes Shaq.

Even if Okafor can't shoot and is a worse finisher and passer, he's a flat out better defender and rebounder than Shaq, and is averaging a double-double along with 1.8 blocks. Plus he's 27 (10 years younger than Shaq!)

If we want to keep LeBron past this year, acquiring Okafor certainly helps

If we trade Shaq, Andrew will leave the board and we will have no one to make completely useless EAYOR threads.

What about trading Shaq

Before I entered the thread that was my EXACT thought as I opened it. Pretty ludicrous at this point.

You're definitely wrong about this thread. There's no way this thread should be closed before the trading deadline.

Shaq has a $20 million expiring contract. That's arguably one of the 10 most valuable trading chips in the entire league. Plus it's not like that $20 million turns into free cap space at the end of the year. By keeping Shaq past the deadline, we're essentially losing out on a long-term player.

That's a debate that will be going on until at least mid-February, and likely until the last day or our season, whether that's in the NBA finals, or somewhere before.

No, you're definitely wrong.

You know who else is a 20 million dollar expiring? T-Mac. Houston is begging teams to take him.

a 20 million dollar contract makes a trade hard because it is so much money to match.

Shaq won't be traded. I'll guarantee it. I'll bet my life savings on it. Shaq's here for the rest of the year to try and help us finish the job in the playoffs. That's that..no point even discussing moving him.

I honestly thought this thread was someone trying to make a "funny". Guess not as it seems to be a serious thread.

We signed Shaq specifically for the playoffs and to win the title this year. Why the hell would we now trade him before the playoffs start?

Amazingly ludicrous indeed.

We traded for Shaq because we wanted to get better, which we certainly are. We all know what Shaq brings to the team.

But as for the idea of completely ruling out trading Shaq, I think that's short-sighted. Aside from Lebron, there isn't a single other player on the team that should be viewed as "untouchable". And even though it would take a whopper of a deal to convince me, that argument applies to Mo and AV too. Do I think that Shaq makes the Cavs better? Absolutely. But we're not talking about 1999-00 Shaq here. And with the way some teams are strapped for money, the right offer could easily emerge.

What if New Orleans calls and says "we'll give you David West and a future pick if you also take on Peja's remaining years" Or maybe Indiana decides that it's sick of hemorrhagging tens of millions of dollars and offers Granger if we also take on Mike Dunleavy's deal? Do you really think that Danny Ferry will George Shinn or Larry Bird "no, it's absolutely ludicrous that we'd consider trading Shaq".

Shaq brings the Cavs closer to a championship, but I think there's some infatuation with who he used to be, versus what he's giving the Cavs right now, which is an above average PER and situational post defense.

Additionally, it's delusional to think that Shaq all of a sudden cares about Cleveland after so vocally ripping on the city when the Lakers were searching for a place to send him back when they were blowing up the Kobe-Shaq duo. He is using us just as much as we are using him. And if we don't win the championship, Shaq is gone, and will likely be leaving tread marks on the Cavs logo on his way out of town (as he's done to every previous team)

So it's nice to have Shaq, but the right trade could be out there. And I don't think it's accurate to say that Danny Ferry isn't going to be talking to clubs that could really appreciate a $20 million drop in payroll next year.
