What should the Cavs get for Anderson Varejao?

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
It's simple: Get equal level for his abilities and talents.

.....

Of course if it WAS that easy we wouldn't be going back and forth, but he's a high energy, tall, double double big that can play anywhere between 20-36 minutes on or off the bench. He's earned his contract, but it's questionable if he'll sustain his level 3 years from now. But why take that risk? He'll be much older. We need a core to build around and it's easier to use veteran shooters than bigs that run around.

My guess: He's worth a draft pick (or two), one of two parts (youth), and maybe cap relief. New York has two of them, but it's questionable without a draft pick and the Cavs' front office's consent.

Did he fuck your wife? What is the rush to trade him? If someone offers up a high lottery pick, sure you do it, but his game is similar to a guy like Dennis Rodman that he isn't going to fall off a cliff at 32. He could play at a high level for 10 more years. I know he doesn't fill up the stat sheet, so most you think he sucks, but I'm not in a hurry to get rid of a player of his caliber.

Jesus lord, a high lottery pick for Anderson Varejao. Dude, I'm not sure how to tell you this, but he is not, has never been, nor ever will be an all-star caliber player. His only similarity to Dennis Rodman is that his two best attributes are his ability to defend and rebound. However, he isn't even half as good in either one of those areas.

Most of us do NOT think he sucks, however when you're viewing him in terms of Dennis Rodman, the fact that some of us actually realize what he is must make it seem that way.

I like the Tiago Splitter and George Hill Idea, but other than that...you know what really sounds good?

KEEPING VAREJAO AND BOOBIE ...the heart and soul of our team and fan favs.

seriously i will be devastated if we trade them. period.

Heart and Soul of this 8-21 team. Awesome.

While AV is a favorite, and brings hustle and energy every game, he is playing out of position now. He is really a 6th man off the bench, and more of a PF than center. He is much more valuable to a contending team to us, and many of them will probably give up something decent for him.

Seriously? Why are people lying to themselves about Andy's worth? He is a role player and thats all he will ever be. He never has been, never will be, and never will have a shot at being an all star. He isn't making a difference for the cavs. His worth is not that high and I would be thrilled to get a player like Gallo for Andy. Jeez, am I the only one who remembers Andy disappearing against Orlando and Boston the last two years?

Yea I am wondering if anyone remembers that Orlando series, where Andy couldn't guard anyone out there. To small to guard Howard, to big to guard Lewis. Still, the guy is a solid player, but a high lottery pick? Um...not that good.

Do you realize that every GM, every coach, and basically every fan of a contending team wants him? But what do they know, they must all be wrong and you must be right.

I'm sure you have stories and evidence to back up such a claim?

Here is what is going to happen. The Cavs will trade Varejao for decent value. However, because so many of you have inflated his worth in your minds, you'll think it wasn't nearly enough. Ultimately, it will result in many people here concluding that Grant just isn't as good of a GM as Ferry. Book it.

Your basing Andy's worth on a series that obviously didn't suit his game?

Rich, I think you are underestimating Varejao's worth

He will be a hot commodity if he hits the trade market. Most contending teams will want him. And there's no way Varejao gets traded without us getting better than a "decent" return. The Cavs would just as soon keep him instead of trading him for something marginal.

OKC and Portland were big players last time he was a free agent. NY has already been reported to have interest, as has Miami. San Antonio has has been rumored to have interest. I'm sure there are others, every team has a spot for a guy like Varejao.

Tyson Chandler. Go look at the awesome stuff Charlotte got for him. There is a guy who is more athletic, rebounds at a higher rate, and is an elite defender. Also, he was on the final year of his deal, so he wasnt a cap eater. Go introduce yourselves to that sick deal charlotte got.

Now, maybe you think it's unfair to compare Varejao to a C. Great, so who would you like to compare him to in terms of PFs? The market for PFs who have little to no offensive game is quite small. However, there is one out there who specializes in defense and rebounding with next to no offensive game to speak of, and his stats are quite comparable to Andy's...Amir Johnson. EDIT: Forgot to add, PFs who have actually peaked and there isn't really any room for improvement beyond this point.

Don't hate me, hate the stats.

Here is the simple fact of the matter. If Andy is a C, then he doesn't possess the shot-blocking abilities that the elite defensive Cs do. So, if you feel like calling him a PF, then he doesn't possess NEARLY the offensive skill-set to demand what it is you guys think he should demand on the trade market.

Again, go look at the Tyson Chandler and see if you can convince yourselves that Varejao commans a higher market than does Chandler. Maybe the Bobcats FO is stupid (they are). But still, look at what Chandler was traded for pre- Charlotte. Emeka Okafor. That's it. A non-allstar C with the same basic skill-set. This is what players with no offensive game to speak of command on the trade market. You might hate to hear it, but that's the way it is.

EDIT: If you still are out thinking Varejao is worth, not only young, cheap talent that is already proving itslef (like Chandler/Fields) + Draft picks + Cap relief....look at what Minnesota got back for Jefferson. Two late first round picks and Kosta Koufos. Yet we have people here talking lottery picks, talking like Fields/Chandler aren't nearly enough?

Hey, some of these people are talking about lottery picks for Andy. His game better be able to suit any series if that's the case.

Isn't that the point though? If he's that good a player, then this shouldn't be an excuse.

People all over this site really need to rethink how they view the worth of Varejao, I love the guy, he gives his all every game, but he is not an all-star. And therefore, will not bring back amazing talent.

An example to what we can expect dealing him for is similar to the Sacramento-Chicago deal a few years back. It was Salmons(scoring role player) and Brad Miller(defense and rebounding) to Chicago for Drew Gooden(expiring, decent big), Andres Nocioni(shooter, defender, fit in with the kings at the time), and Cedric Simmons(salary filler).

Now, of course in the Cavs situation, we will probably try to get picks in a deal similar to the one above. We could possibly move Mo+Andy together, or Boobie+Andy together as mentioned in other threads, to get more picks/talent.
