Windhorst Radio Show & Updates

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I agree with all of the above. One of the very few things ESPN does well anymore are the 30 for 30 docs. They are insulting the viewers with what they currently trot out as sports news.

You bring up a great point. Some of their original content is excellent. That's why it is so alarming that they actually spend more than Netflix on original programming. Why aren't they capable of trying to create more compelling original content avenues when so much money is being spent? That's why i've made the assumption that their executive team is a bit too old school. They're not being innovative by switching up how current shows are being presented. They should be making more of an effort in new ideas, not rebaked concepts.

All I keep seeing from people is that the general public doesn't want the tmz bullshit or the screaming talking heads. Well, I don't think that's true. That shit still gets ratings.

I think it does mostly because it's all that's available during offseasons. During the season, you can talk about the games, the stats, the performances themselves.

But in the offseason, there isn't much to talk about so these guys manufacture drama.

You also have certain players, and LeBron is one, who are drama magnets.

You're right to an extent. SC6 has actually performed better than they expected from a ratings standpoint. However the fact remains that they've been losing subscribers at an alarming rate for the past two + years. While those shows may still receive higher ratings than other programming offered on ESPN, they are losing tons of expected subscription revenue, which pretty much fucks their ability to create any sound future revenue projections. Their executive team will be under immense pressure over the next five years to figure out a way to gain back customers. They have to create some sort of value that past subscribers don't believe exists anymore.

ESPN banked on people not being able to live w/o cable, but they can. They kept jacking up their rates, bringing the entire cost of the package up, and people have started to have had enough. Pretty sure they are the most expensive cable channel, outside of the premium, non-packaged channels like HBO.

Well, lotta people saying fuck it, I can watch most of what I want to watch on the internet. And ESPN got caught with their pants down, shelling out a boatload of money for these TV contracts.

Speaking of that, NBA players better get every penny, because when this TV deal is up, the money will absolutely be coming down. No doubt. If ESPN could get the hell out of that deal right now, they would.

And ESPN is going to be forced into these layoffs for years to come because things like the College Football Playoff and NBA deals are only going up over the next decade. And the ironic thing is that for some of these packages ESPN was probably bidding against itself...

Wow. This one is definitely the most shocking to me out of all the layoffs. Stein’s gonna be getting scoops for some other company now.

Makes no sense, one of the top 5 people working at ESPN in my opinion. He is the type you keep at any cost.

Why wasn't he laid off? He doesn't really have the insider touch with LBJ anymore.

* Scouts have told me that Cavs' on-ball defense is not really worse than average.
* But, scouts say, Cavs' help defense and weakside defense is awful. These are the big problem areas.

Yep, anybody that understands basketball knows that perimeter defense is not the reason we sucked on defense all year, Love/LeBron/Frye but mainly Tristan being awful at protecting the rim sliding and contesting shots at the right moment and being out of position on the backside defense 90% of the time is the reason we've been so bad.

But I still put this all on Lue, its not that hard teaching basic defensive principles and defensive positioning which he clearly hasn't done at all in the regular season.

Now the players are being asked to do something they haven't do all year, its going to be a real struggle getting them to play great defense after 82 games of sucking, I hope LeBron lights a fire under the players asses and gets them motivated to give it their all on that end again like last year.

I think ESPN letting go of Stein might also be a sign that they might really be hiring Adrian Wojnarowski and his Vertical staff as had been rumored some months ago. If so, they probably wouldn't need to pay both Stein and Woj, and they could justify letting go of some of their NBA guys to bring the NBA guys who work for the Vertical. Yahoo is doing even worse than ESPN so this move makes sense for all parties involved.

I would be skeptical of Woj at ESPN. Woj hated ESPN, he enjoys the freedom of having no affiliation to Walt Disney.

It would be awesome if Woj and Simmons combined the Vertical and The Ringer. They would have the NBA digi-sphere on complete and total lockdown.
