Windhorst Radio Show & Updates

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I would be skeptical of Woj at ESPN. Woj hated ESPN, he enjoys the freedom of having no affiliation to Walt Disney.

It would be awesome if Woj and Simmons combined the Vertical and The Ringer. They would have the NBA digi-sphere on complete and total lockdown.

Wasn't it rumored Woj is going to ESPN?

Weird where the money is going: if you asked me when I started logging on the ESPN website in the early 90's that I thought the revenue would be in podcasts I would have been shocked. Radio 2.0 to rescue of longform writing?

My understanding of the economics of Grantland and Bill Simmons was that it was Simmons podcast that essentially paid for the rest of the Grantland writers. Simmons I think sucks on TV but is a good writer and is great on podcasts who picks good guests. I think the Ringer will do be around for awhile because that site is really built around the podcasts with the articles as a way to get people to listen

On an unrelated note: I can't stand ESPN's website anymore. That last refresh to help with mobile viewing has taken away a lot of the fun stuff or made it much harder to access (grantland, 538, trade machine, rapm). it's easier to find trade machine by just googling it instead of navigating the website. For a company that did really well with its website for such a long time looks like it lost it way there as well.

Nope, he's joining ESPN and the guy sold out big time. Everybody has a price.

From what I understand Grantland was a huge money-loser. And The Ringer hasn't been off to a great start, either. I thought Woj's hatred of ESPN was purely competitive, not a specific animus at the company. That and not getting cited for breaking reports. And if you're Woj, you might as well go somewhere that seems to be somewhat sustainable. Yahoo as others have said is in worse shape than ESPN.

Its funny that you have to pay for both Lloyd's Final Thoughts and Hey Windy now.

The podcast is pay to listen now. Still free if you listen live.

To be fair, The Athletic's coverage is 100% worth the money.
Absolutely, if for no other reason than Lloyd is actually around the team every day and directly talks to the players, so you get good tidbits and in-depth insight.

The podcast situation with Hey Windy is different because I don’t know what paying for that gets you. Anything newsworthy would be published in an article, so all that’s left are Windy’s opinions and “analysis”, which has never been his strong suit.

Also, Eric Koreen - who covers the Raptors for The Athletic - is one of the best NBA analysts around. Add to that the excellent Indians coverage, and I think it is absolutely fair to say that The Athletic is well worth the money.

That's another good point. It surprised me how good the Athletic's Indians coverage is, especially because their lead guy on that is essentially doing sportswriting for the first time. But he's great at it and provides better Indians coverage than both the Plain Dealer and ABJ combined.

Has nothing to do with ESPN. WKNR is the one monetizing this time around. The subscription service is directly through their parent company, Good Karma Broadcasting.
