With the 39th pick of the 2022 NBA Draft ....

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
P.J. Tucker, Draymond Green, and Marcus Smart all do dirty deeds. Because they are also skilled enough to stay on the floor, the dirty deeds are not done dirt cheap. Roddy looks like he has that mix of skill and toughness.

Grant Williams
Chuck Hayes
Danny Fortson
Corliss Williamson
Malik Rose
Big Baby Davis

Just off the top of my head, championship teams ALWAYS have that guy as a part of their top 9.

I’m watching Roddy against Michigan right now. It’s crazy that it’s all about potential and development. This guy can help a team win games like next season.

1. AC/DC reference …. niiiice

2. Roddy strikes me as the kind of guy who will be causing “should the Cavs go after him in free agency? But will he even settle for the MLE?” discussions on this board three years from now. I’d like to see the Cavs take him and save Future AllforOne a lot of typing in 2025.

I agree it would be good to add a pipe-hitting thumper to our toolkit. With our long athletic lineup there are times when teams try to abuse us physically and just push us around, and at those times we could use someone to counter, to adjust their thinking, and to give some protection to our assets.

They need to throw the mic to Jay Bilas when Roddy gets drafted. I need all the Bilas euphemisms!

There are some physical concerns about Roddy, who measured at just 6’4.5″ without shoes at the NBA Draft Combine. However, his 6’11.5″ wingspan may allow him to guard larger opponents. Meanwhile, although his body fat percentage is relatively high, he performed very well in athletic testing.

His lane agility (10.75 seconds) ranked in the 89th percentile. His three-quarter sprint (3.22 seconds) and his max vertical (35.5 inches) both ranked in the 60th percentile or better, via Stadium Speak.

I like Roddy as much as the next guy, I just don't know where he plays on this team. I've mentioned it elsewhere, but we have too many guys in line for minutes and not enough guys that *command* minutes. If we can consolidate these guys and make room for Roddy at the SG spot, I'm all for it. I just don't know how that happens just yet.

Also, Roddy reminds me a lot of what the Cavaliers *thought* they'd get out of Dion Waiters. Good Dion = David Rodddy to me.

Ugh. I don't see Waiters as a comp at all. They look like 2 completely different players to me.

Not with you on this one.

Dion was a combo guard who looked for his own offense. On defense, he was mediocre and limited.

Roddy's strength is stretching the floor with his shooting while also flashing into the mid-post. His passing vision is excellent for his size, he played QB in high school at a D1 recruit level.

I'd say his strength is defensive versatility, says he defends 1-4 and I believe him. He isn't ideal in height for a small forward - which is why he is likely to slip into the second round - but his strength and standing reach push him into a swingman role.

Want to show some love for one of my favorites in Chuck Hayes. There is something wild about a 6'6" center being the best big man defender and a guy that regular shut down Dwight Howard and old Shaq in his day. He had the ugliest free throw hitch I have ever seen and was a worse player on offense than half this board thinks Okoro is, but if you told me we could grab Chuck Hayes with the 39 pick, I do that and look forward to our long term big man rotation of Frobley+Hayes and laugh as no team can get anything going against that

Worse than Chris Dudley?

I’d be okay with Roddy as a second round pick as a guy that can guard 2-4.

I have seen Roddy's standing reach at a little over 8'9. He's around the same as Jalen Williams in height and standing reach. So, just fine for a small forward.

For comparison, I see Okoro's at 8'4.5. I've been very frustrated watching him try to defend forwards despite his plus strength. Roddy isn't as long as guys like Leonard Miller or Dieng, but he is playable at SF.

Same size as Norman powell

@CleveRocks Norman Powell is built like a basketball player at 215. Roddy, a former D1 football prospect, tips the scale at around 255. That's what makes his film so intriguing.

He's shooting threes accurately off the bounce and in catch and shoot on offense, getting physical with his on-ball perimeter defense on the other end.

I don't believe he fully understands off-ball defense yet... but for a guy getting mocked in the middle of the second round, he's doing things the Cavs needed last season.
