Magic discussing deal for Arenas

By Adrian Wojnarowsk

Orlando and Washington are engaged in serious discussions for a trade that would send Gilbert Arenas(notes) to the Magic, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

Arenas has privately told people for days that he believes a deal will soon send him to Orlando, where he’ll be reunited with Magic general manager Otis Smith, a friend and mentor from Arenas’ days with the Golden State Warriors. Sources said Orlando has escalated its pursuit of a deal in recent days. After losing five of their past six games, the Magic have shown more urgency to find a perimeter scorer who can help them stay a viable contender in the Eastern Conference.

Still unclear was whether Orlando would send the expiring contract of Vince Carter(notes) as part of the package or build a trade around longer-term contracts, including that of backup center Marcin Gortat(notes), sources said. The Wizards also have been angling to get a first-round pick in return, sources said.

Arenas has four years and $60 million left on his Wizards deal. Following his 50-game suspension for bringing guns into the Wizards locker room last season, Arenas became further expendable after Washington drafted No. 1 overall pick John Wall(notes).

The Magic have discussed Gortat with other teams, sources said. Several teams, including Houston and Portland, have inquired about the 7-footer’s availability. If the Magic are going to take on the remainder of Arenas’ contract, it could be important for them to trim some other deals to spare their luxury-tax hit with what’s already a league-high $94.7 million payroll.

Orlando has had discussions on several fronts, sources said. Phoenix has been making calls on forward Hedo Turkoglu(notes) and had a conversation with Orlando about the former Magic forward. Turkoglu is in the second season of a five-year, $53 million contract. The Toronto Raptors traded him to the Suns over the summer, but Phoenix is already looking for ways to get off the remaining four years, and $44 million on his deal, sources said.

I was still surprised when the Suns did that deal for Hedo when they were stacked at that spot

But more interesting is the Magic discussing GA, I think they maybe jumping the gun to try and get Dwight help so D12 doesn't up and leave when he is FA. I say that because Vince is old and done while Lewis is and less effective every game it seems like, they really don't have much wiggle room and the contracts they gave to Reddick and Gortat are pretty big for the amount of production they are getting from those 2 guys.

They really don't have too much flexibility with the current roster or any youth other than Nelson, Howard, Anderson and Bass I also don't think bringing in Gil will help them get that much better though he should be better than Vince.

If Orlando can get GA for Lewis, picks and fillers it would be a decent deal, they should hang on to Vince so they can void that team option next year and get him off the cap so they have more flexibility

Re: Magic discussing deal for Arenas

How can Washington want a first round pick for such a bad contract? Maybe they will swap bad contracts?

Re: Magic discussing deal for Arenas

Call me crazy, but if this did end up going down I wouldn't blame the Magic.

They are not winning anything with Vince as their go-to perimeter guy. Arenas of three years ago would fit perfect in that role. Though he may not be quite the same, I still trust him more than Wince.

The risk is simple, if they trade Carter for him, they lock themselves into Lewis, Howard, and Arenas for the next 3 years.

You're crazy. . . this essentially gives the Magic 0 chance of keeping Dwight if the team doesn't win in return for a pretty crappy chucker. I'm sure Carter could average over 20 pts a game if he took 15 shots too. . .

Well, I should have mentioned that in the risk. If you're Howard in 2012 and the team is tied to Arenas and Lewis with absolutely no flexibility and no titles, there's not much reason to stay especially since there's going to be cap space somewhere where Carmelo Anthony or Chris Paul will be waiting for him to join and be what he really is, the second option/defensive stud.

Though I still disagree with you about Wince. Not that I like Arenas a lot, and it's not about his PPG, but if I needed a guy to go get me a bucket and I know I can't count on my superstar because he can't shoot FT's....I would take Arenas over Carter every day.

Re: Magic discussing deal for Arenas

an interesting fact that doesn't get mentioned in that article is that Arenas could promise the Magic that he'll option out of his deal in 2013 so his contract wouldn't be as big. Steve Kyler mentioned it on twitter although that's just pure speculation at this point (Hedo btw did that in order to land in Phoenix). here's the tweet:

Hypothetically Gilbert says, I'd opt out in 2012... Orlando would have to move on that... Hedo gave up his option year to get to Phoenix.

Prior to joining Orlando Wince was basically Mr. Regular Season clutch, and had the second most game winners behind Kobe. But as far as playoffs went, he and Arenas had basically the same credentials. . . Arenas' crappy play and even worse defense would make this team so damn bad. . . hope he proves me wrong, but the man is shooting is having an awful year and I think over 90% of his shots are jump shots. He's basically the last thing this team needs.

oh well, here's to hoping the man will try harder and succeed. . . or even better, this not be a trade at all.

If Chris Paul and Dwight HOward are on the same team, Dwight Howard is still option 1 on offense.

If Orlando wants to move Gortat, I would like to get him here.

I know Otis and Arenas are good friends and Arenas sees Otis as some sort of mentor and everything, but Arenas would have to be either insane or BFFs with him to do that. I really don't see him giving up that much money, but who knows. . . I think I'll wait until the trade is finalized before crying some more

Re: Magic discussing deal for Arenas

If they do this and keep Lewis they would have 50 million tied up in GA, RL and DH (until he is off the books) not to mention Reddick and Gortat being about another 11 or 12 million (can't check exact numbers since I’m at work)

That is 60 million in 5 players 3 of which are way over paid IMO and 1 who hasn't played consistently heavy minutes enough to gage yet (Gortat) though he is productive in the time that he gets. Playing the same position as the franchise player never helps with getting those consistent minutes which is why I feel that is why Gortat really is an unknown/unproven even though in the time he has gotten he has appeared effective

If GA and RL are part of the "core" of this team going into his FA summer I don't think Dwight comes back unless another younger player forces themself to the Magic..... That summer is the summer the Lakers will bring in Kobe's replacement for the next decade as well so don't be surprised to see D12 or CP3 end up in LA that summer if the Lakers haven't already gotten that player
