Worst Case Scenarios

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
In what scenario can a TPE land a draft pick? Would the pick have to come along with another player? I assume you can't trade one as large as the Cavs have for a lotto pick straight up? Or that a team sucky enough to be in the lotto would prefer the exception over adding young talent?

I think they were talking about using it to buy picks.

honestly, as fans we suffered through a season of tanking and didn't really mind because we knew it had to be done to be a good team again. But if we unload our TPE and pick for an established vet and march back to mediocrity, I'd be so pissed. We can't cut corners now, not after we made it this far into the rebuild... Just keep doing what we've been doing and use our assets, dan gilbert's deep pockets and veteran players to obtain as many picks/high upside young players as possible

this board cracks me up at times. everyone has been whining for days/weeks how the Clippers trade didn't work out because all of these guys are going back to school, and there will be nobody worth taking with that Clippers pick. Yet, when there is speculation that the pick might be moved with the TPE for an already proven NBA player, people don't like the idea. hopefully nobody's ass gets splintered while sitting on the fence.

by the by, should the cavs make this move, maybe they are banking on there not being a 2011-2012 season, which would allow them to get better, yet still get a high draft pick in the 2012 draft.

To me it would be the Cavs using the TPE to take on a big contract from a team who would like to get rid of one and getting a #1 pick along with the player/contract for taking on the contract.
Somewhat similar to the Baron Davis trade.

Honestly, we probably could make the playoffs next year. Look at how this team plays with Baron Davis at the helm...now it's a really small sample size, but we are also really not healthy. Add Derrick Williams into the mix, and maybe Alec Burks, and an "impact player" with the TPE, and we could compete next season for the 8th seed.

Hopefully that's not what management has in mind....
I don't really think so, mainly because I don't trust the health of a lot of the guys (particularly Jamison, AV, Boobie, and Baron). But still even if they were healthy, I don't really see who they'd jump. Chicago, Miami, Atlanta, Boston, and New York are all locks for the playoffs. Orlando is too if they don't trade Dwight and he stays healthy. Philly and Indy should be just as good next year, if not better. New Jersey is going to be better with a full season of D-Will, and there is a chance that they trade for Dwight too (in which case ORL would fall out of the playoffs and NJ would be in).

IMO, assuming there aren't any significant trades, NJ/PHI/IND will be fighting for the 7 and 8 seeds with the Cavs slightly out of that picture with the Bucks and Pistons...if the Cavs stay healthy and can get a decent player for the TPE (not sure who?)

I'm not sure I'm understanding your post correctly, but you can't "trade" a TPE to another team. It's essentially a credit for $15M or whatever amount, and only the Cavs can "use" it.

Huh? Nobody is on the fence. Just because people don't think there will be great players available with the LAC pick doesn't mean they should want to add some older player instead

This team needs to rebuild and you don't rebuild by trading picks for older players, period.

so, your contention is that instead of adding a proven nba vet by using the 8th pick, the cavs should just draft someone they don't think will be anything special simply because that guy will be younger. you don't rebuild by using lottery picks on flame outs either. it's not like people are speculating about picking up an antawn jamison aged player using the clippers pick. so, it's the perfect fence-sitting scenario.
