It's not about giving up 2 second rounders, more than it is Spencer stopping or preventing the growth of our young bigs.

not to mention the fact that he could end up only being a rental for the remainder of this season.

if we can't resign him to a reasonable contract in the offseason, i would chalk this trade up as a loss. although not a huge loss...

Beyond the fact that team doctors recently injected his back with cortisone, what do we know about Varejao's current health status?

Even if you're holding out hope for the chances of drafting the next Parsons/Stephenson in the second round, this roster really doesn't have much room for more developmental guys that aren't top shelf talents (basically, 2nd round flyers). We already have the following young guys who are going to need minutes:

Irving
Thompson
Bennett
Waiters
Zeller
Dellavedova
Karasev

7 young guys. That's practically an entire rotation of developmental talent. On top of these young players, we'll still have our 2014 1st, Orlando's 2014 2nd, and a whopping 3 possible 2015 1sts. We have a ton of picks all of higher quality than the ones we gave up. Even if we only use half of those picks on players we intend to keep and develop, we just don't have a ton of playing opportunities for 2nd round talents to prove themselves, aside from the D league.

I cant believe all this hooplah about 2 2nd round picks. People are acting like we traded away Ginobili and Parson awya for Hawes. Get over it people. Players like that are NOT the norm. Ginobili may be the best 2nd rounder in the modern NBA and Parson's is just a lucky pick by Houston. You cant demean the FO for not holding out hope on landing a 2% talent. We took a sure thing who will help our team. If he goes ok whatever hes declined this year its not like he'll be heavily coveted. If he shows good here, we are probably his best bet to get decent money.

Our second rounders over the last decade have been crap. Lets stop acting like we gave up on Ginobili

People aren't too upset at giving up 2nd rounders. We all know how few of them pan out.

The bigger problem is that we gave up value for someone whom, honestly, doesn't noticeably make us any better. Spencer Hawes will end up taking Zeller's minutes. The difference between both players is marginal at best, yet we gave up up value for said player. All in all, we gave up more than we got in return.

Throw the 2nd rounders stuff out the window for a minute. This is basic economics. Why give up more than we got in return? Unless Varejao's injury is more serious than we thought this is a trade that served no purpose and didn't need to happen.

We don't have to keep every draft pick and use said player on our team. We could've packaged the picks we just gave up to either move up in the draft or acquire another player.

but we already have our own 1st in this draft, you wanna trade up and take another? You want to add two more 1st round picks to the youngest team in the league?

There's nothing wrong with having two seven footers on the roster, that can spread the floor in your rotation. Andy might be pretty badly hurt. Back spasms can be a huge deal. He might be on a minute restriction when he comes back either way.

Just Tristan, Bennett, Zeller, and not knowing what we can get out of Andy is very thin if we're trying to make the playoffs and do something.

Those extra feet of floor spacing are 3 pointers btw

Also Hawse is a better on the boards than Zeller and he's already our leading shot blocker before suiting up Friday

Oh and we started today with three 2nd round picks now we have one like every other team in the league except ours may end up being the highest due to it being from Orlando

So give up 2 2nd rounders for a couple extra feet of floor spacing...great argument. And Hawes isn't a better rebounder than Tyler Zeller. They're about equal according to per36 numbers. Can't go off of averages seeing as how Hawes plays way more than Zeller.

The Miami Heat could look at LeBron, Wade and Bosch as expensive rentals for just the remainder of the season since each can opt out of their contracts, but they don't. So why are we looking at it that way? Maybe we can look at it as a cheap tryout to see if we want to commit to the resources to a long contract. Maybe if we rented Jack, we would have avoided signing him. Just saying there's more than one way to look at something, and it's not all negative.

Zeller will probably be better than Hawes going foward. Hawes has been in the league forever and hasn't progressed much.

In 2012 we gave up a #24,33, and 34 to aqcuire Tyler Zeller at #17.

Multiple draft picks provide the opportunity to package them and move up. A similar deal might've been available this summer had we not burned our 2nd rounders.

Hawse is a better rebounder than Zeller he also blocks more shots. Also about those two 2nd rounders, who were we gonna take at picks on the 40's and what team is going to trade out of the first round of this draft to give us another 1st?
