Posey signs with Hornets. PIP suicide watch is on

Re: Posey To Make Choice In A Month Or Two

If it's not us W&G, is it fair for us to be upset with Ferry for this one? Or should we stick with the "he did everything he possibly could" rhetoric we've had to feed ourselves for the past three years?

We're talking about James Posey, not the elusive piece to finally put us over the top. We just made a ginormous trade at the deadline! Is everyone going to burn pictures of Ferry after every single non-Cavaliers roster move is made?

Re: Posey To Make Choice In A Month Or Two

If something happens this offseason where we get Posey and a viable option at the 2 without trading away everything (so we have pieces to move at the deadline) I will call it a great offseason. Say Redd and Posey join the Cavs, we will be a serious contender still. I think we're moving down people's playoff lists because we're staying idle.

The Cavaliers are still talking to Boston Celtics free-agent forward James Posey, but the Twinsburg native is looking for a contract of at least three years. Some reports have him wanting four years at middle-level exception (starting at $5.3 annually). The Cavs don't want to give out such a long deal -- they did that to forward Donyell Marshall and guard Damon Jones. While they traded Marshall to Seattle, they still have Jones under contract -- he is totally out of favor with the coaches. Posey is 31, and certainly is a role player who has proven is value to championship teams in Boston and Miami -- so you can't blame him for seeking a long-term deal.

Careful holmes.... ;)

I may have worded that improperly. Believe it or not...I did not mean that in any rude way towards W&G. I'm asking him for actual advice. Fact of the matter is, more often that not we've heard that Ferry did everything he could and couldn't get a player.

I'm interested if Posey is one more example of this situation. And if so...should I be disappointed in Ferry or just accept the fact that we gave it all we could and/or decided that extra year wasn't worth it.

Posey is a solid piece and a guy who could fit several needs on this team. If I thought that he was gettable and it came out that the extra year was what stopped us from getting him, I'd be upset.

I'm not upset about Brand, Baron or any of the other guys who probably weren't gettable whatsoever. But if Posey was a possibility and there's something we DIDN'T offer and we could have...I'm on my way to some picture burning depending on what happens at the deadline.

While I would be upset if we didn't get Posey, I would be more upset if we shot ourselves in the foot to get him. He's a good player, and a great bench piece but He is not worth a ridiculous contract at the age of 31. Now I know Cavs fans are a little impatient right now with all the big signings going on but we need to be patient. If we make a quick decision just as a reaction to all the signings we are going to set this franchise back a few years, something we can't afford to do right now.

I think we all know that no big moves by Ferry are going to be made until the trade deadline. At that point we will be making our moves for guys like VC, Redd, and Artest.

Also has everyone forgot about guys who are going to be able to be picked up that we haven't heard about. Guys like J.R. Smith, and Josh Childress, very good players who are going to be available in the coming weeks. So lets sit tight, be patient, and have a little faith in Ferry's ability to make the right decision for the franchise.

I'm wondering how many times Mark B. , the agent who says he's not going to go back to Boston if he gets a better deal ... I'm wondering how many times he's going to go back to Boston to try and get them to up their offer ...because he's gone back to them twice, at least, since saying he wouldn't do it again.

Like I've said , Posey wants to stay in Boston, but, Boston has the worst deal. I don't know what New Orleans has done, but, I think we have a better deal out there than Boston. In fact I know we do. But, if New Orleans has come in with four years, then they are the best deal ...I'm guessing that is the situation.

Boston 2 yrs, Cleveland 3 yrs, New Orleans 4 yrs. ... but I'm only speculating on New Orleans ...

The question you have to ask yourself is this. Is 31 year old James Posey worth a five year contract at approximately 30 million dollars?

If the answer is no, then you can't be upset about not signing him.

Re: Posey To Make Choice In A Month Or Two

It's like bidding on eBay. If you want to do it smart, you need to decide how much something is really worth to you and be willing to just let it go if you're outbid. Don't come in weak where you miss the item because the auction closed before you had a chance to raise, and don't get yourself in a bidding war where you just end up helping raise the price of the item through the roof.

But playing it smart doesn't always get the job done.

Was Posey a player we should have over-bid for? I really don't think so. We should have signed him up last summer before his performance in the playoffs raised his price so much higher.

As I've said before the guy isn't even in Bowen's league - but it looks like he's going to end up getting paid quite a bit more.

Heck, did you guys realize that Raja Bell is only going to make $5M this year? Now there was a nice bargain in free-agency. He's now 31 yrs old like Posey but his contract will be up in 2 years at the age of 33. It sounds like Posey will be earning a whole lot more at the age of 35.

Re: Posey To Make Choice In A Month Or Two

Can't blame Ferry for not jumping into the 4-5 year category. 3 would have been reasonable but lessons have been learned from the Marshall/Jones signings. If you are thinking long term, always go with youth.

Thing is I probably would give hime the 4 years, our back is against the wall to get pieces. Free agency is only going to give us solid depth, and thats what posey is, any starter needs to come via trade or draft. But, in the end, this is a judgement call and if he feels 4 is too long i cant argue with him on that. W&G, how long would you go if you were GM? Do you think bringing him in this year is worth eating a year or two?

Re: Posey To Make Choice In A Month Or Two

Not worth 3 years in my opinion. I want a clean slate come 2010. Last year was a contract year for Posey as he played on a team, in a city, where absolutely everything goes right. But giving him 4 years to settle in a city where everything tends to go wrong is a terrible idea. No No No. 2 year, max.

Re: Posey To Make Choice In A Month Or Two

Posey is a good player who is about to be overpaid. He is a wonderful complementary piece to a champioship puzzle. But the more years a team offers this guy, the crazier the deal becomes. Donyell Marshall comes to mind when you talk about players in their 30's getting long-term deals. The deal looks good in the beginning but not so good down the line until you get to the point when the contract is expiring.

In Posey's case, we all know the man can play. Three-point shooting and solid perimeter defense sure sound good. Making LeBron happy sure sounds good. Having a shot a title sure sounds good. But, paying a broken down 35year old who can't get it done anymore doesn't sound good at all. There's risk on both sides of the equation.

For Posey, I'm sure it's going to come down to years. This will probably be his last contract and he will want to make it count. Sounds like the Horents may be willing to give him more years. If so, he could land there.

Cant blame the hornets, they have alot of nice young pieces that just need the right compliment. Paul is one of my favorite players to watch play. He truly is a joy to watch, and posey would be a great piece for them off the bench.
