Round 4 - Pick 111 - Dawand Jones, OT, Ohio State

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
In his interview with Zegura, Cedric Tillman said he originally wanted to be in the NBA but his dad talked him out of it; along with him only being 6'3"...
I love football as a fan, but let’s say theoretically that he had an equal chance at being an NBA player.

This is bad parenting advice for what we now know are obvious reasons right? His kid is gonna have CTE without a doubt now.

We’re all thinking that way now right?

To be successful at basketball, he would need to go the Zion route, where his probability of success is lower. But arguably, he would make more money, but would struggle with injury because Physics.. Which is not to say he does not risk injury as an OL..

Zion will make more than 200 million dollars even though IMO, he is likely to wash out.. your average 4rth round nfl pick makes maybe 23 million over his career.. but what is the probability Dawand develops into a Zion, versus a 4th round lineman.. personally I think he made the right move

Longer career, more money, more brain cells. Win, win, win.

I would expect to see more athletes that would have played football choosing tennis within the next 10 years or so. I think people will start to take the head injury data more seriously once it gets shoved in their faces.

Frankly, I’d encourage all great athletes to at least TRY tennis at some point anyways.

Cost barriers and an elitism stigma still exist in the sport, but it’s nearly impossible to make professional sports so why not try a more individual and skill- based- sport where athleticism gives you a massive edge at all levels?

Golf is good too, but I just can’t recommend that fucking sport to anyone.

FTR I’m open to someone telling me I’m an asshole here.

Reasonable people still encourage their kids to play football. I don’t love it when people question my parenting. I could be the dipshit here.

I’d have to think most parents would discourage their kids from playing football if they have better options. For a lot of kids, though, football is the path they have to either a free college education or even making millions in the NFL if they’re good enough.

But football is still the most popular sport in America, and until that changes, kids in general are going to want to play it and damn the long term consequences. We all think ourselves immortal when we’re young.

Football takes a lot of concussion blame that I feel isn't carried with relevant data. Are pro athletes getting head trauma in the NFL? Yes, it's brutal when 300 pound super athletes ram into each other. Is the data tracking for middle school and high school? Are those numbers being compared to the kids who go to a skateboard park, regularly mountain bike, attend soccer or hockey practices? Really questionable choices made by the NFL a decade ago just aren't being forgotten when changes have been made in youth sports.

At the center of all these questions is the kid's enjoyment level. Parents at times try to push their kid onto an after school activity for convenience of the parent. I think that's where the real misstep occurs.

My youngest son has been pushed into a few different programs just because I still work in San Francisco and the school lets out at 2pm. I think we've permanently scarred him from dancing programs and he will never dance again, George Micheal style.

So bringing it back to Dawand Jones - I think the "basketball is my first love" criticism is a minor footnote. There are plenty of athletes who had to switch sports or switch positions from their top choice and had great careers. The NFL draft was filled with former basketball stars who were drafted as receivers or defensive backs. I think he fell because of several odd situations all piling up. He put on about 30 pounds since the bowl game... that's the real red flag.

I'm sure you're an asshole, but I wouldn't call you one for *this*. I played football in college (on a dare/challenge) after spending much of my life playing tennis (even spent time at Bollettieri). I told my kids the only activity they weren't allowed to play is football (and I'm adding rugby to the list). As much as concussions are a concern, other injuries (structural and soft tissue) are higher concerns for me.

I won't tell anyone else what to allow their kids to do, though. I give my opinion, but only when asked.

My eldest played pop Warner for a week. Then they carted a 14 year old player off the field with a leg bent sideways at the knee. He bailed. Ironically two years later he discovered Lacrosse. Played through High School. Senior year he drove into traffic and took a helmet to helmet hit, knocked him out cold.. but he loved Lacrosse..

My wife is very clear she does not want our son to play football, so if you’re a dipshit so are we.

Sadly, any activity that causes repeated head trauma has been proven to cause CTE. Soccer is becoming a big one now due to the headers.

They should be tracking concussions from the time kids are in MS. Starting in the NFL is pretty pointless, when the players probably already had it in college.

I was able to convince my wife that all the repetitive jumping in dance is known to cause CTE. Told her a really detailed story about how Mykhail Barishnikov was diagnosed with it during the filming of Sex and the City*

*I didn’t really do this bc I’m not a sociopath, but I would suggest it if one was desperate to keep their child out of dance.

Bunch of fuckin assholes in this thread.

I'm not letting my daughter play football.

Seriously though, golf and scholarships were mentioned. I saw that women's golf and male cheerleading are the two sports with the "easiest" access to scholarships. My girl and I are hitting the driving range shortly and then playing 9 later. Gotta save dad some money.

Rowing is always a great option.
