A Closer Look at Derrick Williams

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Hybrid pf's scare me at the nba level. None seem to dominate. Just an observation. Does the kid have enough size to play pf? Or does he have the outside game to play sf full time? Really anymore the 2 foward position are completely different. You have basically 2 big men, 2 wings and one pg. Hybrid fowards really have no place anymore if they cant play wing full time or big man full time. Ask Odom who struggled with all of his skills until he found a 6th man role under the greatest coach in the history of the game. Just saying, havent seen him much (yes i live in az, but i have a life, lol) ...looking for feedback.

Lee from what I've seen he is more of a SF than a PF. He has very good handles, is good in iso's, and likes to take it hard to the hoop, but he can jab step you and burn you from outside. I believe he is shooting 70% from behind the arc, and that is with a good amount of attempts.

His game reminds me a lot of Sean Elliott's. But he has that Iggy type drive to the hoop. He plays a lot more from the top of the key than low post.

Reminds me of Carl Landry. Solid, but I would rather blow a top pick swinging for the fences than settling for Carl Landry.

I somewhat agree. If Irving is not there I think Williams is the safest pick. The most upside pick is PJ3

Carl Landry does not shoot 70% from 3 pt range. Agree with the hybrid concerns but he can definitely shoot like a 3

Landry made 2 three-point shots in his NBA career, this dude looks like a freaking sharpshooter.

One more thought on the hybrid concerns for Derrick Williams.
In the NBA to be an elite level scorer you need to be able to get to the line and shoot the 3. The midrange game while pretty has gone away in favor among players because simple math dictates getting a 3 or and 1 produces more points per possession. Williams can hit the 3 with ease and he's shown an incredible knack at getting to the foul line. This ability to go inside and outside reminds me of James Worthy who was a big SF at 6'9

If I'm the one selecting and Irving is off the board it would be really hard to pass on Williams, a surer thing, for potential, PJ3. I believe Williams could step in right away and make an impact. He wants the ball and isn't timid. He is a leader, and when you are picking this high you want leadership qualities. PJ3 does not exhibit this quality yet, and he might never.

I really like the James Worthy comparison.

Williams has also made 25 of his 36 three-point attempts, good enough for a 69 percent clip that would lead the nation if he had the required number of makes. "I looked at the tape from last season, and every time I got the ball, people would just play off me to keep me from driving," he said. To put an end to that, he spent the summer taking 400 to 600 jump shots a day in between pickup games with guys like Paul Pierce, James Harden and Brandon Jennings at the HAX Center in Southern California.

Liked this part of his work ethic

I really like his attitude about taking high percentage shots and getting to the line. I dont think hes a touch on irving, but hes right there with the jones'

Yeah, I read that and I was like "wow" but no words came out... So I mouthed wow. Lol

DWill's problem is that he wasn't highly touted coming out of HS or even after his Frosh year. He's tryin to catch players like Sully, Irving, Barnes and the Jones' who have been on the NBA radar for years. If he had PJIII's height, he'd be the best big in this draft, hands down. If he was a little slimmed down/ quicker he'd be the best wing in the draft. But he's a tweener and that hurts him as well.
Fuck it, I take him after trading down a few spots and work him into the rotation at SF. He seems to have the drive necessary. I like that he watches tape THEN works on his game based on what HE sees.

If he really can play the SF spot, then I might have him at #2 behind Irving. Unfortunately, I just haven't seen enough of him.

We have to see what his measurements are in the combine: if he has that ridiculous David West like wingspan of 7'3 then he can play PF in the league.

Also I've have seen enough of him matched up on defense with wings to make a determination if he can guard out there: I think workouts are key with him here. If the Cavs throw some guys like Harris and Graham on him and he's able to check them well, he goes way up my preference list

Arizona just posted a nice 10 minute long video of Derrick Williams vs. Pac-10 opponents from this year...nice!
