A Closer Look at Derrick Williams

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I like what i've seen from this guy and these highlights show more of a small forward game , which is important IF we are able to take the guy. I think he'll be a very solid player ala' Paul Pierce in terms of being able to score the ball in various ways.

He seems to be the athletic version of Boris Diaw.

His game is on FSN right now, just FYI.

I haven't checked the box score but he seems to have a nice game so far.

He is a power forward all the way. His ball handling outside the free throw line is non existent. He can finish through contact but I question if that will translate at the next level.

No way is he a top-3 pick, IMO. Maybe is take a look at him @ 4 but even then I rather take the Kanter or the Euro Center.

He moves really well without the ball and he seems to enjoy getting his teammates involved. He had a nice over the shoulder pass to the dude with the dreads as he was cuttin through the lane.

I can't believe this but I got to agree with Eli, Williams is a power forward. A very good one, but he is more comfortable around the rim. I've seen a whole bunch of his games hoping he could play the three, but I don't think so.

Too small to be an NBA PF. Do not want, if he's gonna be a 4

Starters FG 3P FT
D. Williams 7-10 0-2 12-12

Starters PTS REB AST PF
D. Williams 26 8 2 3

Sorry. I'm copying and pasting this from my iTouch. So it's kind of sloppy. But he had a pretty good night. He put up great numbers and the odd thing is I'm disappointed he missed two 3pointers. Lol. I think I should tame my expectations.

26 points on 10 shots: that's crazy. He's going to be a very good player in the NBA if he doesn't get hurt: Shoots the 3 well, has the strength to finish And1, and he's willing to put in the work to make himself better

I think Williams would be a better NBa player than Sully. D Will is not your prototypical SF who can handle the ball and create from the perimeter but he could bully other SFs in the high or low post with his strength and footwork. If he could defend the 3's from the perimeter, which we will see in the pre-draft workouts then I will be inclined to draft him if KI is not on the board.

As I said before, Sullinger lacks the athleticism to play above the rim. I know that is not his game, but in NBA, he will get a lot of shots blocked and altered unless he somehow adjusts his release.

Many people here are advocating Sullinger as the safest pick but in my opinion, the safest pick would be Williams.

He has a very efficient game that can translate right into NBA as he has the ability to draw a lot of fouls and a decent jumper to keep the defenses honest.

How is he the safest pick when he's a tweener who gives you zero playmaking?

I'm cautious of any college player who uses brute force to dominate because that ain't translating at the NBA level. Williams is a dominant paint presence in college and is able to use simple jab steps to create space to be effective.

Great.

But that won't work in the NBA, at least to the point to warrant a top 4 pick. Williams will be an effective rotational player who will be able to put the ball in the hoop as a back up power forward when he's in the game.

Ain't nothing 'safe' about a player like that.
