A Closer Look at Jabari Parker

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I look at as between Parker and Exum. Griffin has talked a lot about fit, which leads me to believe it's a coin flip at the top. Exum could play well with either waiters or irving. He could fit. Parker could fill the hole at the 3, and play some 4 for us. I think what you saw from Dellavedova should show the cavs don't need a ball dominant player. So, in my mind Exum is going to jump parker. I just don't see Irving, Waiters, and Parker working out. Too many guys, and only one basketball.

It's only natural that his Dad is going to defend him and highlight his strengths, but there were a few inormative things in there. One being that Jabari is related to Hali Ngota and another NFL player on his mom's side of the family.

Jabari Parker is arguably the most skilled player in the NBA draft.

The former Duke swingman is expected to produce in the NBA right away. Some project that he'll have a 12- to 15-year career. And he's almost certain to be off the board when the 76ers make the third overall pick on Thursday night.

But Parker also has been perhaps the most criticized prospect.

Citing unnamed sources, ESPN reported that the 19-year-old had gained weight and intentionally bombed in Friday's workout with the Cleveland Cavaliers, who have the top overall pick. There have been other unflattering reports in the last month.

"I don't know where they get this information from," Jabari's father, Sonny, told the Chicago Tribune. "Did you see his body on the video [from a workout in Santa Monica, Calif.]? He's not overweight. He takes care of his body."

A league executive who was at the workout agreed. "In those individual workouts with his agency, he looked in shape to me," he said. "He wasn't out of shape."

Being questioned is nothing new for the 6-foot-8, 235-pounder from Chicago, who left Duke after his freshman season.

Parker was deemed a defensive liability in college even though he played out of position in the low post. But he still was a consensus all-American, leading the Blue Devils in scoring (19.1 points per game), rebounds (8.7), and blocked shots (1.2). He also finished third on the team in steals (1.1).

He beat out former Kansas standouts Andrew Wiggins and Joel Embiid for freshman-of-the-year honors from the U.S. Basketball Writers Association.

But Wiggins has been receiving most of the NBA hype because of his athleticism. Some believe the Canadian will develop into a superstar; Parker has been viewed as a solid but unathletic player.

"He led his team in rebounding and blocked shots. So how is that if you look at all of his highlights?" Sonny Parker said in an interview with The Inquirer when asked about his son's perceived lack of athleticism. "Look at how many dunks he had during the year."

He pointed out that he has seen some athletic people in his neighborhood in the South Side of Chicago.

"We are talking about people that can jump!" said the elder Parker, who played six seasons for the Golden State Warriors. "I can take you somewhere where some guys can really jump out the gym.

"But what it comes down to is the longevity; you have to be able to do other things. All of the rebounds are below the rim. Larry Bird, man. Look at how many rebounds he was getting."

Parker is a product of Chicago powerhouse Simeon Career Academy, which produced Derrick Rose.

He led Simeon to four straight Class 4 state championships. Parker finished his prep career as the national player of the year.

"The formula is called it. He has it," Sonny Parker said. "Yeah, we can do all this and that. We can drink the same water and do the same drills. But certain players have what's called it. And he did it on his own. He wanted to participate and play."

As a first grader, Parker played on the sixth-grade Chicago Elite AAU team that his father coached. Looking to get better, he always practiced against older players.

"My wife, she really knew [he would make the NBA]," Parker said. "I kind of knew later on, maybe in, like, the sixth or seventh grade. . . . I didn't want to put all the pressure on him."

But some might argue that Parker was destined to become a professional athlete. His father averaged 9.9 points in his NBA career. On his mother's side of the family are Baltimore Ravens defensive tackle Haloti Ngata and Buffalo Bills tight end Tony Moeaki.

"Jabari used to be Sonny Parker's son," the father said. "But now on the South Side, they say, 'That's Jabari Parker's dad.'

That explains Parkers "chunkiness". He's half Tongan so he's got polynesian blood making him big boned! The kid is never gonna look lean and cut and I predict he's gonna have a Melo type body at best for his career. No matter, he's gonna be an elite scorer but dang, I look at Wiggins and think perennial 1st team defense with 20 ppg on offense.

Was there any goal behind those posts beyond expressing that the Bucks new ownership > Cavs' ownership?

That's all I've gathered so far.

It was an incredible amount of words that managed to say very little.

Right now Gilbert's primary rep with other fans/media around the league is a guy who couldn't put together a functioning supporting cast for LeBron, went off the deep end when LeBron left, and has now spent the last four years burning high lotto picks.

An outsider's view is nice due to biases people can have of their team but what this is just simplified, half truths that show limited knowledge of the Cavs and adds little to the discussion. This "Primary rep" is not an analysis.

Compare the body language and the tone of that response to this one from the same interview and you can tell there is more than a bit of truth to the notion that he didn't give it his all in Cleveland.

I don't care for his response. A bit of a tude towards Cleveland, is my impression. I think there's more to it than Cleveland just not telling him he's their pick, since why would they do this. Not feeling comfortable with his answers. Even assuming he believes this, why say this? This is the chance to still impress Cleveland, but he does not do it. It does give credo to statements that he at least dogged the workout.

So much for him being an alpha dog over Wiggins--he's saying he's going number two. Number two?

Wiggins says he going number one. Which is the bigger alpha dog in this context?

I remember Parker saying something about he "wants to roll with the team that wants him most" in a recent video. Might of been his NBA Rooks video... can't remember. Maybe Parker just feels MIL really wants him and he didn't get that impression from the Cavs. That would lead to natural emotions of him leaning towards MIL imo.... Either way, not concerned. Parker doesn't control where he ends up. We do. I am sure he will warm up to CLE if we took him #1, obviously showing that we want him more than anybody else on the board.

Lurking Bucks fan here. I understand the sentiment if this was a few months ago. Our former owner, while a wonderful guy, didn't have a clue how to run the basketball operations.

Now we've got two pretty sharp billionaires who are all in on this thing and remaking everything from the ground up. Whether they ultimately are successful remains to be seen, but they didn't seem to have any issues getting all four guys into Milwaukee for workouts (Embiid's injury came out the day before) and one of them (Parker) clearly wants to be there, which is a new experience for us. The new owners Edens and Lasry are pretty brilliant guys, so I wouldn't bet against them.

I think both Parker and Wiggins will be great pros and neither team can go wrong here. That said, for the moment, I think Cleveland has a bigger challenge than the Bucks. We've watched a dysfunctional owner in action for 25-years. Over time, they develop a reputation as being hard to work for. Talented front office people go elsewhere and players tend to try and avoid those franchises. At the moment Dan Gilbert is in the Dan Synder/Jerry Jones realm. Other than having some amazing luck in lottery drawings, from an outsiders perspective Gilbert spent the last decade mismanaging a lot of situations as it relates to the Cavs. Those type of owners have a hard time changing their stripes and can be problematic for a loyal fan base. We know this from experience as Bucks fans.

The Cav's are clearly farther along in their rebuilding than the Bucks. But whether Gilbert is able to create the type of organization and chemistry to get the Cavs back to a 50-win team remains to be seen.

Players decide games, not owners. Does Dan Gilbert suit up for the Cavs?

The interview wasn't bad, IMO. He just went with what he felt, and he probably felt the energy the Bucks were giving. Cleveland doesn't give any indication to whom they might draft. Straight poker face.

I hope we draft him tomorrow.

Right we have the first pick why would give vibes. I think all this trade rumors are coming from the Cavs them selfs as most teams want Parker... I think it is to try to get Gannis from Mil.

Andy KatzVerified account ‏<s>@</s>ESPNAndyKatz Well then: Jabari Parker, who looks fit, said he will be the No 2 pick. That's his prediction. Bucks. pic.twitter.com/wN5671suD5

since all the videos seem broken.

I think he had a bad workout and messed up his shot with the Cavs.

on the other hand I can understand his trepidation about going to Cleveland.

In Milwaukee he will be the guy . in cleveland he will have to share with other option and potentially ( although i dont see it happeneing) backing up lebron james.

Jabari Parker

Parker is versatile, but relative to Andrew Wiggins, he’s much less active in the midrange and more active near the basket. Still, his blend of strong interior skills and a jumper good enough to stretch opposing defenses is what makes him a top offensive prospect. Now if he could only learn to play defense …

I have grown nothing but cooler and cooler on Parker over the past days. Parker is a great prospect, I love his offensive game (don't know why everyone says he isn't athletic, he runs and jumps fine), but I don't like much else about him besides his on-court tenacity (has more of a killer instinct on the floor). I came to this thread after watching the ESPN Truehoop TV quiz with him and he said he thought he was going to go #2 again. He could just be being honest, i don't think the kid is dishonest at all, but I just get vibes of him not really wanting to be here, especially if he is feeling like he is second or third choice to Wiggins and a healthy Embiid.

Another part of why I've grown cooler on him is purely selfish: I feel like Wiggins with Kyrie would be more fun to watch, especially on the break. Spectacular oops from Kyrie to Wiggins and dunk facials may not win basketball games, but they are certainly fun to watch. Defense wins games though and I've already seen Wiggins use a lot of length and lateral quickness to bother players, even blocking jump shots which doesn't happen a lot for perimeter players.
