Re: My Name Is Earl ... Clark?

The weakest part of our team last year was the bench. Sure Clark isn't going to be a star but he improves our biggest weakness. No reason to hate on the guy. No reason to get too excited either. Everything is so black and white on this board lately. Bennett is a stud, Bennett is the worst player I've ever seen. Have a beer everyone. :chuckles:

It's tinkering around the edges on the 3rd worst team in the league last year. It's almost like it's for appearances sake. Here, we're doing something, but not really.

And if these are the types of moves they're making, then not extending the QO to Wayne Ellington makes almost no sense at all.

Re: My Name Is Earl ... Clark?

If we get him for cheap, there is nothing to be complaining about. I love the fact that we're trying to sign some actual NBA players to populate our bench.

If the Cavs are serious about getting Kyrie/Dion/Tristan/Anthony's feet wet with a playoff berth, we need to start adding role players like Clark and a decent backup point guard.

If this is our only move, of course it's worth getting upset over. But if we can swing a trade for a viable starting SF or C, players like Earl Clark, Alonzo Gee, Tyler Zeller, and even CJ Miles become MUCH more useful as they slide into the bench roles that suit their skill level. These guys won't be so below average once we're asking them to perform at the level at which they're capable.

I understand your frustration. But the Cavs are going to wait until the big names decide and try to obtain players via trade. The Cavs are a vulture right now waiting for guys like Dwight Howard to decide. Then they will attempt to swoop in. Also, they want flexibility for Lebron whether you agree with it or not. Sorry we aren't making huge splashes. But you have no reason to expect them at this point.

Re: My Name Is Earl ... Clark?

I watched many of the Laker's last 20 games and Clark was a big part of their run to the playoffs.
He hit quite a few fourth quarter three's in tight games and played with confidence.
He stayed in front of his man on D and blocked out well.
He really played more of a stretch 4 but often guarded the sf.
I think his size and the good play in the playoff run gives him a big edge on Gee. And he knows MB's defensive system.
Plus the fact that he played with Kobe shows he doesn't need the ball in his hands to be effective, and should make him a good fit with Kyrie.

A negative is that he had a bad playoff series against SA.
I really like him as a top 7 rotation guy.
He will be a big upgrade over Walton, Casspi, and Speights.
Averaged. 7.3 pts. and 5.5 rebounds in 23 min. for the season.

Re: My Name Is Earl ... Clark?

Earl Clark is a great pickup. He can guard the 3,4 and he can hit open jumpshots. Also he's 6'10, long, and athletic. At worst he can give you the production of Gee and CJ all in one player.

Do we not need a bench this year? Can he come aboard, for the same or less than Speights made and be a more versatile player and better teammate? You act like Chris Grant or the fans on here think this is te final piece. Everybody knows its a minor move but they don't feel the need to color it completely negative or 'pointless tinkering'

Easy there. He shot 33.7% from 3 last season, which is just barely treading water, and he was 2/15 for his career up until then. As much as I dislike CJ he sure can shoot the ball, and comparing Clark to him is just silly.

Re: My Name Is Earl ... Clark?

Eh...according to both Win Shares and Wins Produced, Earl Clark is an incremental upgrade to Gee.

Win Shares for 2012/13:
Earl Clark - .080
Alonzo Gee - .036

Wins Produced for 2012/13:
Earl Clark (selecting SF for position) - .149
Alonzo Gee - .045

Wins Produced thinks it's a bit more significant of an upgrade than Win Shares but either way you slice it this is not a major move. No reason to hate it, no reason to slobber over it.

One slight concern would be the that EC only posted these numbers for one season, before that he was god-awful, and that was in a D'Antonio system which seems to have a unique effect on certain players.

In a word this move would be: middling.

What else can CJ do besides chuck jumpers though. Also Gee is at best 8th man on a really good team.

Re: My Name Is Earl ... Clark?

If we can grab him for a couple mill then I wont be upset. I just fear us spending 4-5 mill on a role player that is mediocre, while we have much bigger needs that should be addressed first.

...you said he gives you all of CJ's production. When CJ chucks jumpers they go in a respectable amount of the time. When Clark chucks jumpers they don't.

Re: My Name Is Earl ... Clark?

think we would be an excellent addition...he really showed some flashes last yr with Gasol out... I think he could definitely play SF here as well as the PF if need be

He'd definitely be great next to Bennett because they're basically interchangeable on offense and defense.

Great point. I don't think you can say the same for any other players on the bench currently.
