Cavs Summer League Team

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I know my own faults.

When Isaac Okoro averages 18 per game on this team, I’m going to get irrationally excited and use it to justify his breakout season.

It’s inevitable.

I was thinking even before I read your post that I'd be doing the exact same thing.

Mobley and Okoro plus

"Mfiondu Kabengele, Lamar Stevens and Brodric Thomas -- a trio that played with the Cavaliers last season -- will join Mobley and Okoro on the roster. Cleveland is also inviting seven players for a tryout, including former Xavier guard Trevon Bluiett, who played for the G League Salt Lake City Stars, and rookie Chandler Vaudrin, who attended Lake High School in Uniontown and signed an Exhibit 10 contract with the Cavs after going undrafted Thursday."

Kabengelle is a guy that could be a great asset much like Tristan Thompson was if he devotes himself to being a defensive minded player who can flash some three point skills .

Fun fact is that Kabengele and Jaylen Hands were traded for each other on draft night and now they will be on the same team (even if only briefly) for the Cavs during the summer league.

Hands is an interesting prospect. He already signed a two year deal with a Serbian team, so he doesn't need to use the NBA summer league to showcase himself for European clubs (as others do). His contract probably contains an NBA out, which would suggest that he would like to be here or elsewhere, at least under a two-way contract. He's a PG or a combo guard. Played reasonably well at UCLA, but he's still mostly trading off his potential as a former five star HS player.

EDIT: I saw someone else up thread said that Hands was cut from his Euro contract. If so, then this would be a more conventional attempt to get another deal somewhere.

My rough assessment in terms of NBA potential:

#1 Mobley
#2 Okoro

(gap)

#3 Stevens
#4 Kabengele
#5 Thomas
#6 Hazer
#7 Hands
#8 Vaudrin

(gap)

#9 Scott
#10 Banks
#11 Bluiett
#12 Ryan

Things get interesting at #5 if we're thinking about potential roster additions. The Cavs will probably sign a young guard for depth, similar to how they have Stevens on the wing and Kabengele in the frontcourt.

#5 Thomas has the inside track having played for the Cavs last season, but unlike Stevens and Kabengele he didn't play well enough to earn a contract for 2021/22.

#6 Hazer and #7 Hands both played overseas, where Hazer enjoyed a breakout season while Hands had a bit of a down year. Both are significantly younger than Thomas, so they could leapfrog Thomas based on potential even if they don't outperform him.

#8 Vaudrin is a bit of a wildcard; he's the best pure PG of the bunch and has great positional size, but doesn't appear to be a great scorer or a great athlete, and he's relatively untested having played in the weak Big South conference.

Players #9-#12 seem to be wing/frontcourt filler guys who don't have any realistic shot at an NBA contract.

Anybody know anything about Blueitt? My extensive research unveiled that he's never gotten an NBA shot, was a 4 year college player for Xavier, is the son of Marines, was arrested on marijuana charges, decent size for a 2/3 but doesn't have massive athleticism, and in both college and G-league has mostly flirted with 40% 3pt shooting on 5-7 attempts per game.

Seems like he barely got off the bench in summer league the last two years, and his most recent G-League season was an absolute trainwreck. I imagine Blueitt and Ryan will get sporadic minutes as shooting specialists, but I don't think they have the all-around skills to be interesting NBA prospects.

No idea. Some of these guys are just guys and we’re likely to get a heavy dose of this lineup:

PG- Brodric Thomas
SG- Isaac Okoro
SF- Lamar Stevens
PF- Mfiondu Kabengele
C- Evan Mobley

Jaylen Hands might be able to steal Thomas’ spot, if he plays well. Where’s the real D-Wade when you need him?
