I just realized that our summer league team will have 2 of our regular season starting lineup in it.
Sorta makes you realize how far we have to go.
It always takes longer to do things correctly. This was a total rebuild using draft picks. With KLove being hurt we were effectively an expansion team. Nick Mileti said five years to get competitive and he was right.
The team has followed a clear plan:
- draft BPA to add talent
- avoid adding weak players who would consume future cap space
- keep that 23-24 cap space free except for quality players we want long term
- make opportunistic deals to add talent and short term vets who can help us
- build a culture of young hungry kids who bust ass in the gym and don’t cause problems.
- don’t stress over fit and roster construction early on. That can be adjusted with trades later. Focus on acquiring talent.
Whether one agrees with the above or not (and I emphatically do) it’s clear the team has a plan and has stuck to it.
KPJ had talent but he was a cultural problem so he had to go. Whether one agrees with that or not I respect that they made a decision they thought best for the team.
Drummond was a gamble but he only tied up cap space for a year.
Adding Allen and Prince was great. Prince had just one additional year of salary and we flipped that for Rubio - a guy who will help us at the point, teach the youngbloods by example and will be a great culture guy.
SexLand will eventually be broken up but they are both talented and assets.
I love Okoro. Many players would have said fuq summer league, I started last season but Isaac is a great kid who wants to learn. He’ll develop offensive skills to add to his athleticism and defensive prowess. It will take time, but I agree with Jimmy Butler.
Mobley - damn, we effectively got the #1 pick because Koby made it clear that’s his guy.
We have a long way to go in this process but we‘re on the right path and I’m happy to be patient while we develop our kids. We are so young. We all know most of the stars in this league are at least 25 years old. Not all of these kids will be with us in five years of course. But we have some exciting young talent and it’s going to be a treat to watch them grow as individuals and as a team.
