Cavs Trade Deadline (discussion)

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Fwiw, espn has the nets having traded a future protected pick for wallace, not this year's likely lottery pick.

Pretty sure it's this years pick....top 3 protected...hope Deron leaves so NJ is left with no Dwight, no Deron, no top pick, and Gerald Wallace's rotting corpse

2010: 25th sold to Dallas, 31st sold to OKC
2009: 29th sold to NYK, 32nd sold to HOU, 34th sold to HOU
2008: 27th sold to POR, 34th for cash and worthless 2nds

Was mostly laughing about how people will blindly praise Grant no matter what. He could've passed on participating in deadline day altogether and people would still be praising him and calling him a genius.

Not moving Jamison was dumb too, but I'll wait to really bash Grant until he isn't bought out.

But no matter how dumb overpaying for a 1st and not moving a worthless vet with no future value is, it is not as dumb as trading expirings plus a guaranteed lottery pick for Gerald Wallace. My lord. At this point I hope Deron goes to Dallas.

edit: almost forgot. do you really think there is any chance the Lakers will miss the playoffs? esp when firing brown is decently likely? come on now.

I guess when you put it like that, waving a magic wand and getting everything you want sure make things a lot simpler.

I would have been pissed had nothing been done for Sessions. I'm not blindly praising Grant. If you got your hopes up for some miracle trade, that's on you. He made a decent move, not a home run move, but a decent move. There was nothing anywhere about anything linking Jamison from credible sources. In fact reports kept coming out how unlikely it would be that he was traded. He nearly got involved in a three-way with NJ and ORL before Dwight decided to hang in Orlando.

Anything is possible out West. It's a very competitive conference and it's not like the Lakers are getting any younger. Why is firing Brown more likely than the Lakers slipping to 9th? Wouldn't the two be linked?

Sw33tlou and Triumph are here to play a role... they show up when there are major transactions and blast the Cavs, look at everything as a glass half-empty, never say what they WOULD do in the moment yet only talk about how great they would have been in hindsight. When it's time to talk about the actual Cavs games and play of the team, they disappear. It's a vital role around here.

The deal was proposed by the Cavs over a month ago and the Lakers sat on it, not the other way around. People who are looking too closely at Luke Walton and his playing ability are missing the point entirely... he is essentially retired. He was included to get the numbers with Sessions to match up. His contract becomes an expiring this offseason. Since the Lakers build through free agency and are over the luxury tax, they needed that cap room sooner than later. They also seem interested in Eyenga's youth and athleticism... Lord knows they don't have any of that on the end of their bench anymore.

Kapono was out of the rotation in LA, but will get a chance to play a little in the next month for the Cavs. It's a nice opportunity for Kapono to show what he can do, and it gets Casspi's minutes down.

Meanwhile, the Cavs don't have to rely on signing free agents, which usually takes inflated offers and still tends to put them behind contenders offering less money. They can continue to trade expirings for picks into the 2013 season. Eventually they will surround Irving with a young core his own age... which Pax and Ferry were incapable of doing with LeBron. Because Pax moved picks for veterans, LBJ was always playing with guys at the end of their careers.

We have a shot at a real core this time around. It will just take some time and smart pre-draft scouting.

yes I know picks in the 30s are in the second round. what is the difference between a pick that is 25-30 and one that is 30-35 except the guaranteed contract?

Unlike baseball/football: basketball the odds decrease significantly of getting a productive with every 5-10 move downwards. That's why people are happy about getting the swap.

It's weird how much people are overhyping a few million for Walton and Sessions right now. We have little leverage with Sessions as everyone and there mother knows he was going to leave in the offseason. I think it's fairly obvious we're not going to try to get into the playoffs this year and Sessions was helping us get into the playoffs. We'll be under the cap next regardless of Walton

In other words, for a backup PG who was actually hurting our goals this year and 6 million in extra salary we're able to get a first rounder this year and get the chance to possibly move up next year. This also keeps our ability to pay cash for a pick if one becomes available which may or may not happen.

This is not a blockbuster move but we got additional assets essentially for nothing

Eyenga was picked under the Ferry regime, ,so are you really certain that it was Grant who pushed for him? He was there, but how do you know who really was the prime mover to pick Eyenga? I saw the pick at the time as just taking a flyer on a guy to see if they could mold him, and better yet a guy they didn't have to pay that year since they paying luxury tax. Blair had a rap of having bad knees.

Maybe my memory is faulty though...

this is possibly the dumbest "insult" ever

how many players have you criticized? go play in the nba! ever criticize one of the espn writers? go become a famous nba journalist!!!!

seriously can't believe you'd stoop to something that flat out dumb without realizing it

yes but they're 4.5 games out and lopez is out another 2(?) weeks. best case they get in as an 8 seed and get spanked.

or they could've held onto the pick and missed the playoffs (which they'll likely do anyway, but w/e) and told d-will hey look here's your shiny new rookie straight from the lottery. probably in the 6-8 range, too.

now if they want to keep him they have to pray they fall in the top 3

Becuase you talk to this board like you are some kind of GM or NBA guru. You do know its possible to post something without coming off like an arrogant know-it-all. Right? If you were so much smarter than the rest of us you wouldn't be sitting on your ass eating Cheetos and talking about what we should have done on an online forum.

Must suck to be a Nets fan today. Wow.

Nets fans after they found out about the trade:

About the culture of our team, Grant said something that caught my attention. "Byron and I talked about Luke for awhile." Clearly, this trade as mentioned above was proposed by us, and Scott is likely high on the fact that Walton has intelligence that might prove valuable to the younger guys. His $6 million salary isn't terrible as even if we went FA hunting this offseason we'd still have some $20+ million in cap room.

Why not pick him up? It doesn't even matter if he never gets onto the court...low risk ($/a roster spot), high reward (young starting center).

From what I read over the years about this, I think Ferry took a gamble on taking Eyenga because he saw someone brought him in from europe just for the draft and no one really knew much about him. It was a play to try to trade for Bosh because he figured out that team was toronto. It was basically a piece in the puzzle that he thought would turn into a package for Bosh. I could be completely wrong with this but this is how I always saw it.

I'd pick up Oden for the minimum.

No more than that though.

I agree. Dump Hollins and see if he can ever get healthy. Nothing to lose now that he's a FA.

Isnt he out for the year and his deal is up at the end of the year? Would this put us in any better position to pick him up next year?
