No, it's like this...
A tragic school shooting happens. Both Republicans and Democrats are deeply saddened at the senseless loss of innocent life. Within hours, numerous people on the left start calling for stricter gun legislation even though said legislation wouldn't have done anything to prevent or lessen the tragedy that just occurred. When people on the right call them out for their immediate politicizing, those on the left retort that those on the right just don't care about children.
Well, I'm not sure I agree with the analogy here. First off, you know my position on gun control; I'm to the right of most of the board (if not all of it). But with that being said, the left's argument is that stricter gun controls would lead to less gun-related crime. I think, empirically, that's a fairly concise and reasonable argument.
As a gun rights advocate, I'm not going to essentially deflect or disingenuously argue that specific gun bans wouldn't reduce the potential for crime using those guns -- nor would I argue that an outright gun ban, like that in Japan, wouldn't save
thousands of lives every year. I accept both of these statements as the most likely outcome.
Moreover, I don't think it's politicization when liberals remind the country about gun laws at times of gun-related tragedy -- and keep in mind, I'm not suggesting this topic is such a tragedy that we can't talk about reforms, I'm asking what those reforms have to do with left/right politics?
A tragic scandal of child sexual abuse by one Hollywood elite makes the news. The breaking of the story brings to light a shady underbelly of Hollywood where not only does more of this behavior occur,
Not to parse statements, but "More of this behavior occur" ... more than where
?
but it's one in which the very people who claim moral superiority in cases like the school shooting were aware of its existence and scope for decades, and yet only now when the story hits the front page do they start speaking out about it.
Yes, and that's definitely a problem -- but look at how that problem is being weaponized to delegitimize righteous causes of the liberal agenda? Don't you see that as more than just a bit disingenuous?
Those on the right bring up these facts and suddenly those on the left claim they are being too quick to politicize this tragedy.
Believe me when I say, I'm not arguing about there being a right time and place -- I don't care about anything like that. I'm asking how does Harvey Weinstein being a rapist have anything to do with the liberal agenda?
That just screams hypocrisy and the left is being justifiably called on it, in my opinion.
Sure, but "by the left?" Or by imperfect people in Hollywood who are being used as props to draw false equivalence? That is to say, Ben Affleck fondled a woman's breasts on national TV, ergo, don't listen to Dianne Feinstein about gun control legislation?
