JJ Hickson: AKA "4 TIMES THE SHYTTTTTTTTT"

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Re: JJ Hickson: Progressing like Olajuwon

Long season. Small sample size. Over-analyzation. Relax..... for now.

Re: JJ Hickson: Progressing like Olajuwon

If that were the case, I'd like it better. Cause it tells us that he finally listened, adjusted, and got rewarded.

After he got benched, 4 mins in, I don't recall him taking another jumper the rest of the game. I would assume someone said something to him. He went to the bench way earlier than normal.

Re: JJ Hickson: Progressing like Olajuwon

Seeing it in person really shows how lazy Hickson is.

Unless he has the ball, he's always the last guy back on defense, often times waiting to cherry pick on the offensive side.

Hickson is starting to become a ball hog as well. Bad habits are creeping into his game that shouldn't be there.

Re: JJ Hickson: Progressing like Olajuwon

Hickson's problem on offense is he doesn't know how to get into games while in the flow of the offense. Right now he is a ball stopper. Until he is put in P&R situations where he has space and is given the ball where all he has to do is go up and score he will not look good in the offense. In the 4th quarter of the Memphis game he was playing within the flow of the offense and he looked really good. Also he has a hard time getting deep post position. When he is trying to post up he is pushed out to the 3 point line and that's when he starts pump faking 5 times and turns the ball over. His work needs to be 10 feet and in.

On defense he just loses his man sometimes. He is also always trotting up and down the court. He never runs back on defense and he puts the defense in bad situations. The 4th quarter against Memphis was the one game where he really looked good and played within the flow of the offense and ran back on defense to defend his man.

Re: JJ Hickson: Progressing like Olajuwon

One issue I have seen lately is that other teams know that you can pretty easily strip the ball from him. Honestly, if he could hold onto the ball he would get at least 2 more rebounds a game. If he has the ball in his hands, other teams simply grab it. I thought the hands thing was over in the preseason, but he actually has a hard time hanging onto it.

Re: JJ Hickson: Progressing like Olajuwon

JJ i think is going thru a mental battle right now. I don't think he had to work hard at his game ever in his life. Im sure in HS and college he just lived off his drive and athletic ability. Now he has to work hard and study the offense and the defensive to be effective , and he is struggling to adapt. MB didn't teach him a thing and JJ just lived off being open bc of Lebron. To me this is like his rookie year learning how to adjust to the NBA when you don't have a superstar to make it easy anymore. Last game he showed that he may see what he finally needs to do to be succesful.

I suspect JJ was taught plenty, I'd question how much if it sank in, or how much of it applies under Scott.

Most everyone on the team showed growth on defense under MB, and even JJ showed some improvement as the season went along last year.

Re: JJ Hickson: Progressing like Olajuwon

JJ will be fine. He's learning how to be a basketball player. He's got a ways to go, but it's a process. He's not a superstar ...don't know if that's in his cards. But, what Scott is looking for from him is a consistency in his approach to practice, and games. The right priority given the the things he needs to work on, and the rest will take care of itself. As long as JJ keeps the focus and effort that he's shown and the desire remains, he will grow into his potential. What is being asked of him is way more than at any time in the past. We have a head coach now that really , in my opinion, knows what JJ needs and can convey it.

As many know, I never was on the same page as our former head coach. Even though I'm not really a part of what goes on with the Cavs in any insider kind of way, I have far more confidence in those running the show now, than before.

JJ learned quite a bit over the past few years. Plus, he also benefitted quite a bit from being with Lebron and learning how to effectively play off of what he did on the court. That was good in some respects, but left JJ lost in some respects when the security blanket was no longer there. I feel more confident that what we have in place now, will help to finish JJ off, than what we had in the past. Byron is an excellent coach ...one that I wish was here many years ago. Everything would be different now if he were our head coach the past 6 years.

This post is begging for details W&G...

What specifically was MB doing that we may not have seen as fans?

I don't think MB was doing anything that fans did not already know about...

MB was simply a nobody in the basketball world and couldn't demand the respect to go along with coaching a diva. He allowed LeQuit to whatever he wanted.

Scott has been there and done that, he is also highly respected in the basketball world..

Re: JJ Hickson: Progressing like Olajuwon

If I were Grant I'd publicly talk about how JJ is untradable, his upside is so great, I can't wait to see him become a 20/10 guy in a season or two and then look to add him in a deal that nets me multiple assets. Yeah, JJ could end up being a David West like NBA player, if you add a top flight PG to the roster, but he's kind of in the same boat as Drew Gooden has been through out his career. Good enough to be a part of a decent team, but ultimately flawed and replaceable. Understand that I'd want decent assets, though.

That said, what team would want to even move decent assets for Hickson? Maybe Philly? But then you're probably talking about Iggy, and does that contract make any sense for the Cavs?

Screw it, maybe you just have to live with Hickson and hope you get that top flight G in the draft.

Re: JJ Hickson: Should he retire ?

There is a .0000000000000000000000000000% chance he becomes anything more than he is.... Which is nothing much..

Re: JJ Hickson: Should he retire ?

I thought his new shoe line would do him some good... turns out the JJ Mustards will go the Air Pumps way....

Don't worry JJ, you still have BK's interest.
