Just thinking...

Do any of these free agents think of the head coach when deciding on which team to sign with?
MB is a players coach.
I mean, who would want to play for

I agree completely with Dwight killing our defenders on the P&R... there's no doubting that.

But I stick by my assertion that Hedo basically ran the show for them on offense without Nelson. He is a unique player on the perimeter for them with the size mismatches he created. Delonte did all he could do, but that big first step off the dribble really got our defense out of position a lot in the ECF. I know Magic fans are giddy about the possibilities with VC, but he cannot cause the same matchup problems with us that we faced with Hedo. I'm still completely relieved that Carter will be facing us next May/June instead of last year's Magic. And Barnes? Meh.

It's one thing to shut down Vince when game plan is centered to just shut down Vince. It's another to shut down Vince when your game plan is centered around shutdown Dwight & Vince & others..... we'll see how it works out. You believe in your team . We believe in our. All we ask is for the respect, but people still like to throw us under the bus like this is still 2007. People still dont want to see us.

That's a valid point, but I don't think anyone here is particularly referring to just the most recent games. The Cavs defense has given Vince fits, no matter if he was the only guy, or when we had to account for Jason Kidd, Richard Jefferson, and Vince, or Devin Harris and Vince. It was never about shutting down one guy. Also, we never once doubled him.

Trust me, there is no one in Cleveland that fears Vince Carter. If anything else, we were thrilled to hear he was Hedo's replacement in the offense.

Hedo was the one single entity that literally frightened every single one of us, purely because of how your offense fed off of him... He was basically a 6'10" point guard, running the P&R with other 6'10" guys, looking for 3 other guys that could hit the 3 as well.

You guys no longer have that. Sure Vince is a scorer, but the P&R will now be run by Jameer Nelson who, while he's a great player, is an entire foot shorter, and now he has one less 3 point shooter to look for as Bass cannot shoot the 3.

That may not sound like a huge change to you guys, and it might not be, but your team actually now falls prey right into the Cavs stellar "shrink the floor" defense. That didn't work last year, but now it will. We have lost nearly all of our need for double teams against your players, and are now facing a team that can be stopped by our in-house defense.

But like you said, we'll see once we play! :)

The lakers gave us real BIG match up problems. Bynum, Gasol and Odom/ariza all on the court at once, thats pretty scary. Cleveland is a good team but they don't create huge match up problems for teams except for lebron, there really isn't a team that has someone to match up with him. IMO I thought SVG's defensive strategy in the ECF was genius, by letting lebron do his thing and shutting down the other players. It will be interesting to see how things will pan out this year

That's true, and it's not true at the same time. Even though we played horribly against you guys, our starting lineup actually paced with you guys for most of the series, and we were up big in most games, especially early on.

Our biggest problem was our bench. We got absolutely NOTHING out of them, whereas Pietrus single handedly mopped the floor with them. That problem no longer exists. 3 of our 4 bench players are gone from last year, leaving the only effective one and adding 3 players who have been high caliber starting role players on playoff teams for the past few years.

Our bench in no way reflects what it was last year. In fact, the way our second units will be staggered and structured, they'll actually look more like our starting lineup from last year.

So in that sense, with our improved bench, the loss Hedo, and the addition of Shaq, nearly every matchup advantage you guys had has now either disappeared or leveled out.

Lol, I thought you guys wanted Vince, but just didn't have the pieces to get him? Lol, Since NJ is trying to get LBJ, they didn't want to give CLE any help and your expirings werent enough to convince them...

I mean if they just wanted expirings, we would have just tossed them Anthony Johnson or JJ Redick, but we had to give up a damn good prospect, Courtney Lee, to get him. Lol, Danny Ferry is a failure. He been trying to get Vince for 2 or 3 years now and couldnt get the job done... Otis Smith >>>>

:D

(lol, just givin u guys a hard time, dont take it the wrong way)

No offense taken. :D

But no, no, no... No educated Cavs fan ever wanted Vince... the vocal minority who were calling for him were the casual fans who still thought he was the Vinsanity of years past.

Granted, if there was nothing else left, I think most of us would have probably been okay with getting him strictly for Wally's expiring, but nothing else. If Ferry really did have any actual interest in him, which I'm skeptical of, I'm sure that was the deal... "We'll take him off your hands for Wally, but that's it." We would not have traded any talent for him.

Long story short... The Cavs and Magic of the '09 playoffs are so not anything at all whatsoever like the Cavs and Magic of 09-10. We're both confident that our teams got better, but the true fact of the matter is, the way we match up against each other is totally and completely different. We'll see come November, right!?

The key is "without Nelson", and IMO Delonte did a terrific job defending him ESPECIALLY considering he wasn't his man. But a solid man to man defender is neutralized by a pick or a screen, so, even if we had a SF guarding Hedo (like ideally we would have) then what happens when he comes off a Dwight screen?

Yes, Hedo's playmaking was a big contribution for Orlando, but I'm thinking they'll be ok with Nelson back, and the fact Carter is no slouch at turning the attention he draws in to assists either.

I'm not saying they aren't talented or won't be successful... just that they won't be as much of a matchup nightmare for us anymore. For Orlando fans to just brush off the loss of Hedo is laughable. And Lee/Alston for that matter. But I guess it's pointless to argue about what was or what will be until we get to the actual games again. Here's to hoping we open up the season vs. the Magic.

You just don't want Wince as your #1 option, but then again, I wouldn't want Hedo either as my go to guy.

There was definitely interest on the board in Wince in spite of his known flaws. At the very least he would have allowed us to run the 2nd unit when LeBron was on the bench like we ran the 1st unit, but sure ... everyone also figured we'd get him for next to nothing.

It's no more pointless then anything else we talk about. Heck, most fans crucify Mike Brown because they think we already had the solution on our roster and Brown just didn't find it or make the necessary adjustments.

I've read someone say we welcome Brandon Bass playing PF because then Orlando won't be able to spread the floor with 4 players ... true ... but that ignores the fact they can field any 4 of Nelson, Wince, Pietrus, Lewis, Redick, and Anderson and still spread the floor.

And IMO until we put answers next to the question marks the ECF generated, we have a big problem.

Q1. How do we keep Howard from backing down our bigs in the post and dunking on them?
A1. Shaq - YAY!

Q2. How do we deal with Howard in transition beating our C down the court, establishing himself in the post and scoring easily?
A2. Maybe Andy's been working on his strength? Hope for LeBron's weakside block?

Q3. How do we deal with the Howard/Player X pick and roll?
A3. Shaq is likely going to stay back, but if our guards go over the screen or under the screen Player X is going to have space to drive and try to get Shaq in foul trouble, or take an open shot. If we rotate someone on the perimeter over to help, they can swing the ball. Will Shaq be able to make the final rotation? Z got killed trying to cover a pick & pop PFs when Andy would rotate over to pickup his man. Is Shaq going to do better? If we fight through the screens ... hmm ... we don't do that.

So what's the answer for Q2 & Q3? I'm just not seeing it.

A2: Stop missing open shots. Keep fouling.
A3: Some of our players do fight through screens....ok one of our players fights through screens. However, we don't have anyone that can fight through Howard, so yeah, we're hoping they call the illegal more often. I'm really interested to see if Show and Recover sticks around, I just don't see how it can given the personnel.

If Orlando did play Bass at PF, then you could do what Orlando did to us. They had Rashard on Z except when Z would try to post up, then they'd switch assignments. It wouldn't be as easy to switch Andy and Shaq when Dwight goes out to set a pick, but perhaps it's an option? Then Andy could show hard to nullify the ball handler, and Shaq could pick up Dwight on the roll.

But yeah it's hard to imagine at this point that we'd ask Shaq to show hard on the P&R given that we had to go away from that even with Z, plus it would just mean someone else would have to rotate over and try to pickup Howard.

The least we can do is take away the point blank shots at the rim, but a hope they miss defense is still unacceptable.

I wonder if besides length, whether there's anything about Moon or Parker's defensive style that might help us out? Like being good at fighting through screens, or at least getting around them and still contesting?

I'm thinking our solution is going to be to send help from the perimeter. I still remember a Lakers game from '97/'98 when LeBron and Larry effectively doubled Kobe on the perimeter, forced him to pass to Luke Walton but LeBron got over so quick, Walton was afraid to shoot and passed back to Bryant as the game clock expired and we won.

Perhaps the Laker's biggest improvement on D this year was that they cheated defenders over extra far from the weak side and played over aggressive defense to make it hard for the offense to swing the ball back around the horn. They were able to make the strong side real crowded, but didn't get destroyed on the weak side. We may steal something from their book.

Middle school lebron was a force to be reckoned with :chuckles:

I was very surprised at the lakers strong side overload working so well. It seemed like whenever we left weakside Pietrus destroyed us.

From what I've seen Parker is pretty good at staying in front of his man, but I can't recall his man being used extensively as the ballhandler in pick and roll situations. It was more like a hedge type move to stick with. I have seen very little of Moon, I'm looking forward to it.

Nobody is talking about this Bass dude. I think he has some major potential to be ruthless PF in this league from now on. Before he played behind Nowitzki, now he gets to play besides Howard. Big difference right there and I feel this kid really can play. He is double double waiting to happen!

Holy crap Grandma! I'm absolutely shocked to see you thinking that a Magic player is outstanding! I thought you thought those guys suck? :chuckles:

I'm really getting tired of hearing Orlando fans and members of their team continue to whine and moan about "not getting respect." You're complaining to the wrong fan base guys. Cleveland hasn't exactly been the pinnacle of commanding respect from the league itself. We're not Boston, we're not Los Angeles. I think you have to be a fool to not consider Orlando a contending team. Most basketball fans on this site would probably agree with me. Both sides have trolls. Bottom line is that we each have talented teams. I personally will not feel comfortable about Orlando until we beat them a few more times because the recent track record between the two.

Both teams improved this offseason, but I think that Cleveland improved more than Orlando did. We desperately needed a post presence and we got it. We needed to improve our bench badly and we have. Orlando will have a pretty good backcourt next season, and some of the depth you lost, you regained through free agency. However, Orlando lost a playmaking forward who was a big part of beating us in the ECFs. And that's the distinction. The Orlando fans on here think we may be overlooking Jameer Nelson and overvaluing Hedo Turkoglu, but who really burned the Cavs during money time?

Welcome to our boards (although I never understood the point of going to opposing teams' message boards). Just please don't be trolls. Again, seriously - stop moaning about respect.

Well, Orlando really suprised me in Eastern Finals. Surely, I didn´t have respect for them then. Won´t be making the same mistake again.

You could also look at it as....he looked decent against back-ups..what happens against the starters?
