Pryor, Posey, Herron suspended 5 Games next season

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
What i love is how everyone feels bad for the poor inner city kid on a scholarship but he has to sell his ring to give money to his family. Everyone of these kids have over $500 in tatoos. If all of the ring and pants money went to their family, where did the tatoo money come from?

Sure the NCAA and the Universities exploit these kids, but these kids exploit the universities and the system right back. Education, legal gifts, life long connections, star status, girls, etc.....lets not pretend there are no perks beyond education for these kids.

Rules that punish players for doing something illegal which this incident was not.

Ok, so if Cam actually received 180k to play you would be ok with that? Because last time i checked, thats not breaking any laws...just NCAA rules.

The only reason why you care because this time an athlete you root for broke the rules and is getting punished. I wont disagree that it should be more like 2 games, but in the end the rules are there for a reason, to prevent the financial gains to the players that would happen if you could sell your gifts and remain an amatuer. Why not have boosters buy shoes for $20k a pair? Open this rule up and I guruantee it would happen.

Why are you still attacking me after i already said I agree with you now a few posts ago? It just took me some time to understand why these guys are being punished and why the rule was in place but i understand it now.

I hope he does go pro. The TP era has been shit anyway. We never should have benched our all Big 10 QB for him anyway as he still can't pass after 3 years.

I am so sick of hearing about how much these kids do for the University and how it's disgusting how poor these kids are. EVERYONE IS POOR IN COLLEGE, unless you have rich parents. I often worked two jobs while going to school and I didn't get anything free. Had to pay rent, food, etc. I got lucky that my parents could pay tuition and books.

I agree that the punishment is a little stiff as I would expect 2-3 games, but fuck it. The kid has been a dope since he got here. Too bad we can't trade him to watch him dominate on another team after Tressel pretty much turned the team in to the TP show

Oh the irony. Pryor also sold his Sportsmanship award he won.

Maybe this should have went in the WTF thread? I mean....... WTF !!!

As for pimping him out? That's pure hot garbage. They are providing him a free education, housing, fame, and the university is a vehicle for him to showcase his talents and get 10's of millions of dollars at the next level. Does the school make out well in the deal? Yep.

I have seen this comment one too many times to not address it.

I had the luxury of having my first year of school, board, food and books paid for. Technically, everything was free.....but holy shit was I broke. Sure, I had an opportunity at an education (I won't address that these kids ARE NOT given an education....they are given an opportunity at an education.they are guaranteed absolutely nothing...and I can only assume the majority of the big time athletes are pushed down the path of least resistance, by the very noble universities being defended). Sure I could "eat"....the same god awful food each and every day at the cafeteria.....and it was a pleasure living in my 15' x15' dorm room, with only the furniture provided to me by the school...a twin size bed, desk and chair. Luckily my parents could help me out, and provide certain amenities that weren't provided. Amenities, like having a couch, TV, and the ability to order a pizza if needed. That is no guarantee for any of these student athletes. These kids have absolutely no alternative way to try and get to the NFL. None. They have to enter this crooked system...so let's take the free choice thing away from this. And we have to stop acting like the deal they get from the university is so great. It's not.

My goodness; I have no idea how to respond to this. This defending of egotistical babies has got to stop. Don't you all know a damn thing about the history of Ohio State and how many alumni feel about that same history? What's wrong with people?

Doug, with all due respect, Erbium didn't say "Everybody shut up! Pryor, et al. are immune from criticism." He simply raised a counterpoint, based on personal experience, to the common argument that an athletic scholarship covers every expense in typical college life.

 My mistake, I thought this was an internet forum where people are encouraged to share their thoughts and opinions in a respectful fashion.

Ad hominem, appeal to widespread belief. I don't know the kids or families involved in this incident, and clearly there were rules broken, but I'm tired of seeing them condemned as though you have the authority to speak on behalf of the entire university or alumni base.

What if a "The Entire Ohio State University or Alumni Base" profile were to pop up on here and confirm Doug's opinions? Would that impact your position at all?

Just curious...

What you just described is the exact same situation that a kid on a full ride academic scholarship from a poor family has to go through. They usually cant work because of the grades they must maintain, free room and board is in the dorm eating dorm food, and if they come from a poor family they dont get any extras beyond the min. How come its an opportunity for them, but if you are athletically gifted its considered taking advantage of the inner city youth?

It appears to me that the NCAA isnt the only one thats being hipocrytical here. The money the football and basketball programs make goes to pay for all the athletics at most universities including the female sports. The football and basketball teams already have the best training facilities at most universities and the most benefits if even the benefits are considered minor by you (many other sports only can afford to give partial scholarships). Sure the schools make alot of money on the sports, but most schools are public non profit orginizations that use the excess money to help curb the ever rising cost of education

Sure we have issues with the cost of education and the over exposure the college athlete gets, but not for one second do I feel sorry for these athletes. Most have the opportunity to not only get an education, but to make life long connections that average student just doesnt get. Wealthy alumni want to meet them, connect with them. These leads to many opportunities in the business world even if they dont end up going pro.

Yes, i truly feel sorry for athletes at major universities, If its so bad for them, then how come millions of more college kids play sports at smaller universities many of which arent even on scholarship. They do all the extra work for the love of the sport and competition. I swear, kids these days are so spoiled and have such a terrible sense of entitlement.

Good question, Jigo. Speaking hypothetically -- I'm an alum myself -- I don't think that would change my opinion. Although a proclamation by the university or "all alumni" would underscore the notion that the players lack appropriate historical perspective, I think their lack of judgment/sensitivity is a character flaw to be pitied rather than a calculated act deserving of my moral outrage. Basically, I'm not mad, I'm sad.

Oh come on, it wasn't prison. You basically just described most freshmen's experience....except most have to pay for it. All I had was the same small room you described and a 14 meal per week meal plan to the cafeteria....except my education, housing and food cost over $200K. For the athletes at my school on scholarship it was free. The kids that needed extra cash(including 2 of the 3 that went on to the NBA) worked the doors at the bars.

For scholarship athletes IT IS a great deal. The super majority have zero chance of ever sniffing the pro's...they should be greatful as hell they're getting an education, housing and food that a lot of people can't afford. This isn't slave labor or being pimped out...they're playing a game they(in most cases) love. It's a win/win for the kids and the universities.
