What to do with the TPE?

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I really hope the new CBA is kind of like the NHL's cap system. A minimum cap of 40ish million and a maximum of around 60 million. Each contract is averaged to find the cap hit, imo it is a more effective system.

No way the max cap is only 60 million if they go to a hard cap. I can see the cap being set at 70 or 75 million with a hard cap. Almost no one is under the cap now, and the current cap accounts for being over and allowing a mle of 5 million each year.

Maybe it's not a bad thing the team didn't use it. They didn't take on a max guy who wasn't worth the money, which is good. They were clearly trying to take on a bad contract to get a pick, and they almost did that but Hamilton was a baby. I just don't think there was as much of a market out there as people thought there was.

More important than what to do with the TPE is if there is no season how do we ensure that we get a lotto pick? I've heard that they take the last 5 seasons and average it out which would be terrible for us because of LeBron being on our team for 4 of those 5 years. We had a 50, 45, 66, 61, and 19 win seasons in the last 5 years for an average of 48 wins in the last 5 years, which I can guarantee is better than 45% of the league (lottery teams). It seems really unfair for LeBron to come back and bite us in the ass ever after he ditched our team, but if they go with the 5 year average then he will.

This is where the ability to swap picks this year with Miami could come into play. Their record was 44, 15, 43, 47, 58 for those seasons. It wasn't by accident that Grant included that in the James trade.

Al Jefferson can definitely play center in this league. There are like 10 true starting centers in this league. AL Jefferson can hold his own against almost all of them. Most players at the 5 in today's game are the same as Al Jefferson.

Wait wait wait, you called Al Jefferson a great two way player?

He's one of the worst defensive bigs in the league.

That is a 16 win difference. But still 32 wins instead of 48 doesn't really make a massive difference when there would still be 10+ teams with worse records than that. Grant is a genious though.

The NHL does the five year thing. The NBA just uses the same odds as last year.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure about this.

It's actually only a 7 game difference. 41 instead of 48. But keep in mind, using the last 5 years (or 3 years, or whatever) of records to determine the draft order is only something that people have theorized, mostly because of how the NHL handled their draft after losing an entire season not that long ago. The situation has never occurred before in the NBA, and I haven't found any rule that covers it. So we can't yet say what would happen, we can only speculate.

After listening to grant with rhoda today ( moron in his own right), got the impression that we are just going to let this expire and give us cap space. He was hell bent on saying that we are going to go after wings in free agency but what happenes if there isn't a league this year? I mean look @ our lineup the wings would get dominated by good college players ...

Davis / irving
Boobie / harris
Gee / skyenga
Jj / jamison / tristan / harongody
Andy / hollins / erdan

If there's a full season, well be lucky to win 35 games and that's not necessairly a bad thing since the 12 draft is LOADED with wings and scoreres

If we are granted an extension for the TPE, it makes it MUCH more valuable with any new CBA. From my understanding taking on salary would not go against us even if there is a hard cap. Other teams would be jumping all over us to take on their excess salary. For the life of me, I see no reason why the NBA wouldn't grant an extension, except for perhaps wanting to screw the Cavs.

I remember hearing that the league won't tell the Cavs whether their extension has been granted until after the lockout is lifted, would give us an extra 9 days though I think.

Would definitely be very valuable.

Send Tristan Thompson to Detroit for Hamilton's contract and their unprotected 2012 1st.

If the Cavs can still find a way to use the TPE I think it's more likely it's for a player making in the $5-8 million range rather than a big money $10 million or over player.

Don't get the feeling they're going to be able to find a way to use it. The uncertainty over what the new CBA might bring isn't helping things. After what happened with the #1 the Clippers gave up to dump Baron Davis' contract I think teams are a little more hesitant to give away picks too. We know Cavs are going to want a pick attached to any contract they take on.

Why do people keep talking about the Clippers trade as a game-changer? It wasn't. The Clippers made the right move, and we got VERY lucky. End of story. If GMs fail to trade 2012 picks it won't be because of the Clippers trade -- it will be because the 2012 draft class is stacked.

BUT picks will be traded -- they may not be lottery picks -- but picks WILL be traded. They are every single year, and every year on draft day people combine later picks to get a lottery pick. It happens EVERY SINGLE YEAR. I've posted proof of this elsewhere, and I will post it again if I have to.

So people need to stop writing this shit.

I will say it again -- the Clippers trade WAS NOT A GAME CHANGER for drafting.

Get it?

Seems like SOMEONE is a little butt-hurt about the Thompson pick...

I understand you don't like him Optimus, but the fact of the matter is, he's going to be around for a while. Let the kid play a couple seasons, THEN pass judgement.
