Wizards/Suns screw Magic - great DP scene

Re: Magic discussing deal for Arenas

ButterM one thing that may or may not work is to let Arenas start a blog again. Dude needs a form of release and reconnect with any fans he has left, perhaps that will help him ease out a bit and be more comfortable. I don't buy his silence one bit. And then there are his knees.

Re: Magic discussing deal for Arenas

Why are people suddenly listing Earl Clark as a Center? He's a 6' 9" Small Forward, no way he's able to guard Centers.

I guess it is a polite way of pointing out Orlando's lack of big men behind Howard. Maybe the coaches know something we don't know about Daniel Orton, but he didn't look ready for the NBADL let alone 15 minutes per game. We have seen Bass try to play center before... he is over matched in the pivot. I think Orlando needs to make another move before the playoffs, but they don't have many more assets to offer.

I really thought Orton was gonna be a steal. So far, wrong again!

Re: Magic discussing deal for Arenas

I see Orlando admitting they cannot compete with the Heat as they were configured. Although they started the season on fire a lot went into the tank the past month or two. If they want to keep Howard they can take a risk. Arenas was pretty good when he was motivated and had healthy knees. Moving to Orlando will help the motivation if not the knees. They will play Hedo for sure, as he fit very well with Dwight, and opens space inside for him. JRich can still ball, whereas QRich is pretty much Anthony Parker. So I think Orlando gets better (only because Lewis took two steps back this year). I hear what you are mostly saying about fewer shots for Dwight, but I think this is better shots for Dwight as both Hedo and JRich will need to be covered outside and that will open the lanes.

Forget the Heat, they might've gotten swept by Boston this year.

One thing I REALLY don't like is the sudden illusion that the Magic got guys that can create shots for themselves when in fact they got guys who shoot whether they're open or not and don't make that many of them. . . I guess that in NBA all it takes to be a "go-to scorer" is to have a bunch of bad nights but nights here and there where everything falls and people remember you for it.

The one thing I do like about Hedo is that he adds the play making that he was lacking and that the second unit will also have an actual scorer. Still waiting for that PF/C . . .

Gilbert Arenas volunteered to come off the bench as the Magic's sixth man on Saturday, saying he believes that Jason Richardson and Hedo Turkoglu should start at SG and SF, respectively.

He doesn't make the calls, but it's probably good news that he's willing to embrace a role off the bench since Richardson has started most of his career and Hedo needs all the help he can get right now and a starting job could boost his confidence and production. As for Arenas' overall value, it takes a small hit going to Orlando where touches will be lessened and the games have lower scores.

Will this help them beat the Heat in the playoffs, should they meet them? That's all I care about.

Orton's definitely a project player and I'm pretty sure Otis never intended for the guy to ever play meaningful minutes this season. . . what did stop him from even getting garbage time minutes was an injury, he was healed from his injury not to long ago (prior to being sent down to the D-League).

To me the Arenas trade looks pointless to me. Getting Hedo back was big, but then they shipped off Rashard Lewis, destroying the advantage they had in 09'. In my opinion, too many people need the ball in their hands to be effective on this team, leading to the ball stopping alot, and stagnation on offense, plus this takes looks away from Dwight. I mean sure Arenas coming off the bench could work, but has he ever had to do that in his career?

I don't think it will be that easy as some make it seem

Arenas was coming off the bench this year for WAS

Anderson could still fit into that stretch four role. . . the Magic finally have that versatility (as long as Bass continues to produce and doesn't go back to 2009-2010 Bass) and Anderson can really bomb 3s. The difference, obviously, is that Anderson cannot play SF and Lewis had a huge advantage when he played at SF posting up on nearly every possession, but Anderson is a better rebounder and gets better and better down low. I'd just like to see his defense improve and him to get into even better game shape, but the stretch four is still there. . .

As far as ball handling, it might work. Bass and Nelson can both play off the ball and that's what Jrich does. Nelson and Hedo can play well off of one another while Arenas will most likely not play a lot (hopefully) when both Nelson AND Hedo are on the court. I think that at most, Nelson/Arenas/Hedo will only be together on the court for 10 minutes a game tops. Well, that's how I think it should be. . . I have no idea how SVG is going to handle this. That guard rotation looks like nightmare.

I think my only concern offensively is Hedo and Arenas going into chuck mode and taking shots way from Howard, but I think the team will be better offensively. My huge concern with this move is how well this team will play defensively, how thin the backup bigs got, and how financially screwed this team is.

Orlando was tops in the league in defense 2 years ago with Nelson, Hedo, and Lewis getting a massive amount of minutes. Why? Dwight Howard and SVG. I think Otis Smith is banking on Dwight being able to make up for a lot of the defensive mistakes these guys will make (which he has proven he can do), and in exchange the Magic have a lot more offensive firepower that has the potential to be extremely potent long-term (and by long-term I mean by the end of this season and heading into the playoffs).

I can't blame Orlando for these moves. They were underachieving as is...

I think they'll miss Pietrus. In all the big games I saw them play, he was crucial.
