23-24 Trade Deadline: What Can Koby Cook Up? (Kitchen Is Closed)

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I'm normally pretty adamant about wanting to make some type of move at the deadline..... but this just wasn't the year. Who was available at a reasonable cost that truly pushes the needle for us?

Not to mention with the way we've been playing, the timing of the deadline makes it even harder because you hate to ruin chemistry when a team is flowing.

They did the right thing. Look at the buyout market, see if there's anything there worthwhile and if not... you make a run with what you have. If it doesn't work out this year in the playoffs then yes, you have to make a major move with one of your bigger names to shake it up. But this deadline wasn't the time for that.

The backup center talk doesn't make as much sense as some think.

Allen can play 30-35 minutes in a big game against a legit big if need be... Mobley can defend the C in spots. Fatass Niang can come push around a few minutes if need be. And people forget Wade is actually listed at 6'9", he can defend there for a few spot minutes as well.

And while I understand that Wade and Niang aren't ideal guys to guard centers, keep in mind that both shoot well from the 3 point line so on the other end of the floor -- these big centers are going to have to come out and defend (a huge benefit to open up the paint for our guards).

Ok, now Allen gets injured or in foul trouble, what are you doing? Mobley likely sliding over to the 5 for 24-30 minutes a night. That means Wade and Niang are taking over the void at PF. So what are we doing with those other 18-24 center minutes? Jones? Oof. Niang and Wade can do it in a pinch, but I don't think that is a viable solution for long.

This is why a viable emergency big is needed.

Dean’s been scheduled for 5 minutes per half. Better defender and shooter than one that plays 25 and one that plays 18 per game. And that’s about all I’m going to say.

How did that time prediction work out? It’s all preplanned. Except for the garbage time. And that’s going to be the way it is if there’s no injuries. No in game adjustments at all. Scripted.

LOL you're saying this after he totally recharged our shitty bench and turned us from one of the most shallow teams in the NBA last year to one of the deepest teams this year.
Sort of. I mean, I liked the Strus and Niang signings. But the bulk of the bench upgrade has come through the natural internal improvement of Wade, Okoro, and (ESPECIALLY) Money Merrill.

If that scenario plays out we’re fuck either way, going scavenging hunting is not going to fix that problem, and I’m not sure Jones/Thompson can’t fill 10/12 minutes in a pinch better then anyone we can pickup right now anyway…….

Well, he played 16 minutes last night so I'd say your prediction sucked balls.

There's too much anxiety about backup centers around here. TT will be back March 16th with a month to play himself into shape for the playoffs. Granted it would be nice to have an Isaiah Hartenstein or whatever but I don't see anyone like that easily available

I'd rather run with what we have and make a move in the off-season after we know for certain what's going on with Mitchell. At that point, we'd have a lot more flexibility to make impactful moves using current starting or rotational players.

It's just not worth risking a negative unintended consequence from moving a rotational backcourt player for someone else who is only a marginal/emergency player in the frontcourt.

WE HAD ISAIAH!!!!!! Too fucking bad. Would have been a perfect fit with his screening and energy.

Was really angry when we let him go. Said so many times.

I think Brobley would be better than anyone that is available on the waiver wire

I respectfully disagree. There were trades that could have been made to fill that slot with a competent piece. There have been FA that could have been signed over the last couple of months, though the current pickings are pretty slim. There are potential additional buyouts that can appear. Perhaps there is a big in the D-League that might emerge, such as Reath.

Bismack Biyombo was out there and would have been a great 14-minute tough guy option. Maybe Hermangomez or Birch still have something in them.

The PED Thompson could have done it. I have serious doubts about non-PED Thompson, though.

I think you have to put in the effort to TRY and figure out a solution. I don't think throwing up your hands and saying "Nothing we can do" is the the correct solution. This is a contingency they didn't properly account for this last offseason (Not saying it was possible, Altman did a hell of a job and only so much can be expected). Its an oversight that could seriously bite us in the ass.

If he gets injured of course the narrative changes that we need another center. Duh. Foul trouble happens, but it's not something Jarrett Allen is notoriously known for. If he has a game with foul trouble we have Mobley/Wade/Niang to cover the spot minutes needed.

Agreed. What's there that's an improvement? Nothing.

Agreed. I'd rather let him come bang around for a few minutes if need be, and he can actually stretch the floor and hit the 3 if needed.
