i agree with waht you said about darko thats spot on, if you combine it with lrry browns and dumars wish to turn him from a tall wing player into a pivot player.
i disagree with the CV and gordon signings, they got desperate and overpaid for two players who have not panned out even when they were healthy.
Every GM makes mistakes. Kupchak and Ainge have been blasted by their own fan bases.
Last summer, the Pistons had their pick of the available free agents, so they weren't desperate. Dumars decided to get Villanueva rather than Boozer. As for Gordon, I wouldn't have gone after him with Hamilton signed to an extension (he gave Hamilton an extension as part of an expression of loyalty, though, since he has that kind of relationship with the players). I would've kept Arron Afflalo who was sent to Denver as a salary dump and was a perimeter defender and one of the NBA's leading three point shooters this season.
But Dumars sees Gordon as a clutch go-to scorer with a body of work in Chicago. How exactly did Gordon not pan out averaging almost 20 points during his time with Chicago? Before Gordon went down with his first injury, he was carrying the Piston offense.
Dumars projected Villanueva to be on the rise in his career. Next season will be telling. Unlike Gordon's contract, Villanueva's is pretty reasonable. Kuester benched Villanueva quite a bit for not defending well. Villanueva responded by putting in greater effort on the defensive end. He's expected to contribute to team defense rather than be a DPOY candidate. Hamilton and Billups were touted as offensive-minded players when they came to Detroit, but learned to defend their positions as they got acclimatized to Piston culture.
