Will we lose CV to the Pistons? Why or why not?

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I think CV knows our payroll situation considering he's been hearing about us beings interested in him.

And even with him knowing that yet still mentioning Cleveland so many times on his twitter makes me feel like he wants to be here, whether he is going to get paid big or just start out with the MLE...

At the same time driving up the media connection between him and the Cavs could help him field better offers.

It gives him increased leverage basically if the market thinks worst case scenario he has an MLE deal locked up with us. I hope that's not the case though and he really wants to be here.

Well Boozer has officially opted in, so I guess we'll see how this plays out. I feel like the Jazz will either trade Boozer or lose Millsap to free agency.

If Detroit was interested in Boozer I don't see why they wouldn't have interest in Millsap. Obviously this opens the door to Detroit signing CV, but I dout Dumars overpays for him.

I agree, CV is too young to understand the importance of winning championship. This is his first chance at big money and, imo, he's going to go for the money. If and only if, Det goes for him, he's all theres.

Det doesn't really have to overpay though. We are his only other major suitor and we are limited to the MLE.

They can offer like ~$1MM more than MLE and lock him up relatively cheap at our expense. We'll see what happens but I'm not that optimistic anymore...

The Pistons are stuck with either trading for Boozer(there may be other offers to the Jazz) which will take time or trying to sign an RFA which the Jazz can sit on(7 days) whilst they try and trade Boozer. The situation is worse for the Jazz and the Pistons as they are no longer just trying to sign an FA. Whilst these teams are tied up (maybe with the Grizz as Utah try to trade Boozer) time for the Cavs to move. All good The RFA being Millsap

Rumor is that David Lee is set to sign an offer letter from the Grizlies.

If that's true, the pistons still need two front court palyers and their front court options are down to:

  • Hedo Turkoglu
  • Shawn Marion
  • Drew Gooden
  • Channing Frye
  • Anderson Varejao
  • Mehmet Okur
  • Rasho Nesterovic
  • Charlie Villanueva

Add Paul Milsap to this list. Okur actually opted "in" to his contract, so I don't think he is a FA anymore either unfortunately.

They could tank another year maybe get into the lottery and then sign a big free agent next summer. Its not like they'll really be competing in the Eastern Conference so I might not be a long shot.

Can we back load Charlie's deal like say:
2009 5.6mil
2010 7.5mil
2011 9mil
2012 9mil?

Detroit could still trade for boozer if they really want him. An offer of a ton of cap space and a 1st round pick might be all it takes...

the cavs dont have cap space to really make a real offer to a free agent, instead they will be offering something called a MLE (mid level exception). every team over the cap has the ability to use this on as many or as few players as they wish. However the amount a team can spend is set by the league (this year i believe its 5.6 million). So the cavs could sign 4 guys to 1.3 million each or one guy (like CV to 5.6). Once a team has used the MLE on a player they may not use that money again until that contract until it expires. For example lets say CV signs a contract for 4 years at the MLE, that means for the next 4 years the cavs couldnt offer it to anyone. Or another example would be a team signs a guy to 2 million a year for 2 years, that would mean that would only have 3.6 million to use for the MLE on players for this year and next.

so a simple answer to your question is no

No, MLE, like all deals, are subject to a maximum raise.

While I do know there is a max raise, I know different types of deals have different max raises. Usually it's a set % of the first year's salary, normally around 8-10%. Say it was 10%. The biggest raise he could get in any year is 560k.

Now, we could give him an 8-10% raise every year.

Its a win win situation!

We get Charlie V for a good price, what he is worth .. not overpayin at all. Or detroit puts all thir money or most of thir money in on a guy who realisticly is not a guy you build a team around but just a solid role player.

We have solid fall back options (artest is the main one i can see)

I'd rather see CV in a Cavs uniform but I don't fear a CV in a Pistons uniform. If Dumars plan on offering CV a contract just above the MLE to see if he bites, I think it's more to prevent him from signing with us than Joe thinking that CV is their PF of the future.

I dunno, I'm leery. But, if CV comes to Cleveland in spite of excess money, I think he'll get a LOT of love here in this city.

Also, remember Danny Ferry said that a big reason why they traded for Shaq so early in the offseason was to use that to their advantage in attracting free agents to Cleveland. The pitch to come to Cleveland to "play with LeBron and Shaq."
