Will we lose CV to the Pistons? Why or why not?

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Bucher just said on sports center that it's widely believed in league circles that the Pistons will make offers to Ben Gordon and Charlie Villenueva tonight...and if not tonight, then sometime tomorrow.

Nothing too new here, but just thought I'd pass along the latest.

Good, they can wait until tomorrow that way Cleveland can lock up Charlie V as soon as the clock strikes midnight.

the cavs dont have cap space to really make a real offer to a free agent, instead they will be offering something called a MLE (mid level exception). every team over the cap has the ability to use this on as many or as few players as they wish. However the amount a team can spend is set by the league (this year i believe its 5.6 million). So the cavs could sign 4 guys to 1.3 million each or one guy (like CV to 5.6). Once a team has used the MLE on a player they may not use that money again until that contract until it expires. For example lets say CV signs a contract for 4 years at the MLE, that means for the next 4 years the cavs couldnt offer it to anyone. Or another example would be a team signs a guy to 2 million a year for 2 years, that would mean that would only have 3.6 million to use for the MLE on players for this year and next.

so a simple answer to your question is no

YES they can do that, the first year only has to be at the mid level exception the salary numbers can then increase, although not to the degree you want

What is the most the salary can increase every year? (percentage)

just like how it was widely believed that after bucks made the jefferson trade they would excercise the team options for BOTH sessions AND CV to make them restricted??

Sadness... We shoulda traded for RJ/CV last deadline when Bogut blew his back out. If we don't get CV, I'll be pretty pissed.

I'd play for the Cavs for $500,000 less than the Pistons.

Think of it like getting $500,000 to play for the Pistons and $0 to play for the Cavs.

Detroit has about $19 Mil to spend. They need a starting PF, a starting C, more help at the small guard spot, and lots of backup at the wings.

So it looks like:
$9 Mill to Gordon on a 5 year deal
$7 Mil to Villanueva on a 5 year deal
$3 Mil to McDyess.

and then they fill in the backup wing spots with the 4 guys that they drafted.

I am beginning to get a little worried that the Cavs may very well get closed out of CV, Artest, Wallace as well as McDyess. I do however expect the Cavs to resign Andy

From Marc Stein, ESPN:

There is a growing belief around the league that Charlie Villanueva has moved ahead of Hedo Turkoglu on Detroit's wish list.

Chicago's Ben Gordon remains the backcourt player deeply coveted by the Pistons, but the prospect of a Gordon-and-Villanueva combo likely would be slightly cheaper than trying to sign Gordon and Turkoglu with Detroit's nearly $19 million in projected salary-cap space.

So look for the Pistons to take that approach -- barring another shift in focus to a Gordon-and-Paul Millsap combo -- while they also decide between Doug Collins and Avery Johnson as their next coach.

Gordon could receive an offer as soon as Wednesday, after sources confirmed that Gordon will be making a formal visit to Motown right away.

I agree, CV is too young to understand the importance of winning championship. This is his first chance at big money and, imo, he's going to go for the money. If and only if, Det goes for him, he's all theres.

That may be true, but let me play devil's advocate.

CV is a guy who has played on garbage teams his whole career. The BEST team he's played on was last year's Bucks team and they were 34-48 and last place in their division. By going to Detroit, he'd be going to a team past its prime, coming off a sub .500 year without a head coach even in place. The money may be a little bigger in Detroit but if he has any sense, he'll realize Cleveland is the opportunity of a lifetime - slotting in at the 4 between the best player in the NBA and an all-time great on one of the NBA's best teams. Take less money now, wait 3 years and get the big payoff when he's 28 years old, in his prime, with (hopefully) some rings under his belt.

For someone who has to be sick of losing at this point, to go to a team that is destined to finish below the other team interested in him would be pretty foolish unless he just wants to get paid... but if that's the case, I don't want him here in the first place. Hopefully we have some good advocates in Mo and LeBron who can use their connections to get him to make his decision from a competitive standpoint.

The thing with CV is at 24 and in this kind of economy can he really leave 2mil per season on the table just for the "chance" of a championship. He will likely have a more prominent role in Detroit than in Cleveland where he would have to share time with AV and possible LBJ (at times) at the 4 spot. He would likely be the 4/5th option (although that may also be the case in Detroit as they are presently constructed) and say what you will, but there's still a chance LeBron is not a Cavalier 365+ days from now.

...but i guess we'll see....

it would have to be around $11 to pull gordon from chicago
