Windhorst: Cavs May Call Pistons Soon

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I worry about Hamilton. They masked it in Detroit for years because they had Ben and Chauncey was so good, but he's kind of a defensive liability. He can't defend the bigger guys at all and has trouble containing small guards as well.

Another thing is his game. I think he could potentially fit well into the offense, except his best attribute is running off of screens and being in constant motion and getting his number called. We were supposed to have a guy to run off screens and hit those jumpers all-day, but we get Parker one of those shots on an average of once every 5 games. If we did that with Rip we'd render him ineffective and his contract is a serious concern.

I'd keep my eye on Rip, but I'd also look elsewhere first.

I think the problem is that Parker can't shake people coming off screens now, and unlike Rip when a play breaks down he can't score on his own. They are similar, and Hamilton obviously wouldn't score 18ppg on the Cavs, but I'd think they would make a more concerted effort to get him the ball coming off screens because he can put the ball on the floor for more than one dribble and score if need be. Parker is almost exclusively a catch and shoot/set shooter at this point, he never regularly could create for himself, Hamilton can to a degree.

Well, I agree somewhat.

I just worry because no matter how many times we cry about it, it seems to me that if the Cavs brought in a dynamic guy like Rip, he'd be relegated to spotting up a lot more.

I hope that wouldn't be the case, but it would takea big change and wilingess to change from everyone involved to make it work, and maybe they can do it, but they haven't proven that yet, which is why I lean away from Rip a bit because if we "miss" on him, we have him for a long long time, and in this situation Rip would be VERY hit or miss. Either we will use him correctly or we won't.

I'd only want Hamilton if there were a chance to get Murphy as well, Im not sold on him being the final piece, but if you can get him in addition to Murphy I wouldn't worry too much about him being incorporated into the offense if you had both of them.

How about a trade with Detroit and Phoenix? Cavs trade Hickson, Gibson, and Wally (S&T for 4.5 million) to Phoenix, Phoenix trades Barbosa to the Pistons, and Pistons trade Rip to Cavs. Cavs get Rip without trading Z. Pistons get a solid scorer in Barbosa. Suns replace Barbosa, who has seen decreases in all major statistical categories, with Gibson, whose 3-pt shooting would fit very well, and Hickson, who would thrive in a system that focuses more on offense than defense.

I really don't want either player. Hamilton has definitely lost a couple steps, and he's shooting an atrocious 23% from three this year. In addition, he's only shooting 39% from the field. On top of a sharp drop-off in his shooting percentages, Hamilton is 31 and has 3 years after this year on his contract at $12.6M per year.

As for Prince, I really don't see how he fits the SG position. I guess he can defend most SGs, but he's not exactly the best shooter to put next to LeBron.

Either player would be Larry 2.0, IMO.

Beggars can't be choosers. But I don't think we'll get either one anyway.

No way in hell I give up J.J & Boobie for Rip.

Hamilton yes, Prince no.

Both have been injured most of the year and Rip's stats are down because of this but recently he's rounding into his career norm. It'd be best to get him while he's cheap and having a down year before he gets his game back together.

I've always felt like Prince is overrated to be honest. He's a great defender, but that's where it stops. Prince is Jamario Moon with 10 times more miles. We don't need him.

I really don't feel this way. Parker is a spot up shooter so that's what we have him do. Rip would be a terrible spot up shooter because that's not who he is. I think it's more the player than the Cavs system. I've seen Parker try to create his own shots plenty of times, he just fails a lot at it. If Rip gets the ball he'll put it on the floor and find a shot, that's what he does. Add that to the fact that for a shooting guard he's been a good passer in his career I think he would fit in just fine.

Worst case scenario... I'd rather stand pat. This isnt 2003.

Furthermore, why on earth would we help Detroit get out from under two of the worst contracts in the NBA?

I like Detroit right where they are... dead last in our division. They need binoculars to see the Cavs right now. Let em rot.

In Prince's case, he had the disc problems in his back, right? That spells danger.

As for Hamilton, he's definitely somebody would should be considered. He can play when LeBron isn't for go to offense. We would just use him the way were were using Boobie and Mo. Mostly the run off screens and shoot. He'll be perfect for that. He's a little older, but at least he could be of use to us. Get him with Murphy, and you got your spread the floor offense with Shaq, LeBron, and Mo. It compliments the starters well. Makes the offense more efficient.

Now, the Pistons want talent, right? We'll have to figure that out later.

As for other things considered, I do think we could run Antawn and Rip in the starting lineup effectively. Antawn is still a spread the floor guy because he can shoot. With less touches, he'll be much more efficient. And Rip speaks for itself. Either one would be perfect for offense and giving rest to the other. Basically, LeBron can play the whole 1st, 6 minutes alone. LeBron rests and Rip comes in. Both of 'em rest and Antawn and Mo can play a little.

You'll have a hell lot of options to go to, similar to how the Celtics run (KG, Pierce, or Allen always are in the game, sometimes together). But we have 5 guys who could create effectively, another off the bench, and good offense in general.

Now we just have to get these teams to give 'em to us for our price. I bet money's going to be pressuring a hell lot of teams, so we are in the driver's seat.

What is the need to upgrade the SG position?
We've got a great perimeter defender in Delonte West who can cut to the rack.
Plus several top-notch spot-up shooters in Mo, AP, Delonte, and Boobie to take advantage of LeBron/Shaq double-teams.
Even our 7'3" C is out on the arc launching threes.
There's a reason this team leads the NBA in 3-pt%.
And hark!...what yonder cometh?...why lo and behold, it's Wad": a combo 6'9" SF/SG who is really looking solid.
What was he doing riding the pine last year?!?!!?!?

If anything, we're STACKED at SG.
We need Jamison...Jamison is da' man!!!!! :king:

I guess the reason is:

  1. Upgrade the starting quality of SG
  2. Have a backup plan in case Delonte can't pan out this year (critical to championship success)
  3. Use a player Mike Brown can trust even further but also ensure that there's a greater amount of flexibility
  4. Give the Cavs a real creator if Mo's having a bad night
  5. SG is easier to upgrade than the big man position...
