What should the Cavs get for Anderson Varejao?

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I seriously wish that individual stats were never kept for basketball players.

My blood boils when I hear of players who check their stats during games. The same is said for the GMs who try to negotiate contracts solely by statistics. Baseball... cool. Stat it up. Its something like an individual game everytime someone steps up to the plate anyway.

But basketball. The stats depend so much on what happens with the other 9 guys on the court.

Andy is one of those rare throwback players who's impact on a game is statistically immeasurable.

I think it's pretty obvious the Cavs won't just trade guys like Andy and Boobie for garbage and late 1st round picks. The only trade I can see us dealing Andy in is to OKC for Harden. There hasn't been a wisper of them making Harden available but you never know.

We almost got him on draft night for Andy.....I remember that

I would really like to get Ibaka and Harden for Andy, both very young and promising and gives Oklahoma the banger inside they need, would need an additional filler player for it to work but Harden would immediately give us a SG and Ibaka, who I think is a better overall player, replaces AV...just my two cents

Yeah, I remember something like Varejao for Harden, Collison, and the 21st pick was on the table

Pretty sure that was Heath.
There was no validity to it,it was draft night of the '10 draft.

Which is why they've developed stats to help take into account the worth of a player more than just your baisc numbers. Things like +/- and shooting statistics that are beyond just scoring points, like eFG and TS. These help us see the worth of a player who maybe doesn't fill up the box score on a nightly basis.

Thunder are the team that stands out to me too. My first thought was also a deal involving Harden and Ibaka. OKC holds on to their young players so who knows if they'd be willing to deal. Varejao does make a lot of sense there though.

Memphis was another team I looked at. Both Z. Randolph and M. Gasol are FA's after the season with Gasol being restricted so they could be on the look out for another big going forward. A deal involving Mayo would make me think.
Rockets are another team that stood out.

It's going to be tough to get equal value for Varejao. You have to get back quality young prospects or a high draft pick in any deal. It's tough to come up with a lot of sensible deals among playoff caliber teams.

Andy was at the top of the league in terms of +/- last year

and how exactly does eFG and TS go beyond just scoring points? If anything they factor in points even more

My bad. Meant to say PER as opposed to TS.

Andy is more than an "energy" big-man. He's an all-NBA defender and a great rebounder. You don't see any examples of it because when teams get players like that, they generally don't trade them.

Well, what's odd is the two best examples I could find of all-defensive big men who were also great rebounders are two guys who hve been traded plenty of times, or simply not re-signed. Ben Wallace and Marcus Camby.

Go ahead. Tell me that these two guys aren't as good, dont hustle as much, or w/e. Both were superior rebounders and superior shotblockers. In terms of just defense in general, Ben Wallace was better in that regard too at the time the PIstons let him walk.

Detroit let Ben walk because he was 32, already on the decline, and Chicago made him a ridiculous offer

Camby on the other hand has been injury prone throughout his career, which is why NY let him go and when Denver let him go he was already 34 and was used as the scapegoat for not making out of the 1st round

We all want to rebuild, but as of right now, we only have 4 players that can bring back any decent assests: Mo, Antawn, Andy, and Boobie. Andy is the most unique player out of those 4, and will probably get a lot of attention in a few weeks. Dont worry, a good deal will swing around sooner or later.

And in this context they're both terrible comparisons for obvious, already mentioned reasons.
